Koala Crate April 2018 Review

This month’s theme is BUGS!

Koala Crate sends a magazine every month called “imagine!” It’s full of activities and stories for little ones. My son loves looking at the magazine and doing the search activities in it. It is colorful and nicely illustrated.

There is also an instruction booklet included. I love the clear directions with the step-by-step guide. It is very easy to follow. There are three projects this month: Bug Dress-Up, Ladybug Pouch, and Bug Matching Game.

On the back of the instructions is this guide that shows a messiness scale and the level of grown-up involvement. It also shows the skills the project works on, such as fine motor skills, exploring, or creating. I love this added information as it gives me a sense of how difficult this will be for my son. I also appreciate how the company is really thinking about the educational aspects of these projects and what skills they can work on through these fun projects.

Project 1: Bug Dress-Up

This project required sticking these felt stickers to the wings to make a special design and put the pipe cleaner around the headband to make the antenna. It was easy and the result was a cute set of wings and a headband (antenna) that my son refused to wear, but instead wanted me to “fly around the living room” in. We had fun!

Project 2: Ladybug Pouch

This project required decorating this red pouch to make it look like a ladybug using felt stickers. Next, you thread the opening to create the closing pouch end. I ended up doing the threading as it was tricky for small fingers. It turned out cute and my son loves putting his bug eye-viewer in it.

Project 3: Bug Matching Game

This wasn’t really a project, but a matching game. The cards are high quality and thick. I love games like this as it provides opportunities to compare and contrast and talk about colors. My son decided he wanted to put these cards in his ladybug pouch.

Verdict: I enjoy Koala Crate by KiwiCo because it allows my son and I do a few projects I otherwise wouldn’t come up with. I like the theme of bugs as it works for spring and my son loves bugs! My son really loved this Koala Crate! Like KiwiCo’s other offerings, Koala Crate does require adult involvement and supervision. It varies from month to month, but some supervision is always needed.

This is not an independent activity for your child, this is much more about bonding and spending time doing a project together. The crate always matches the theme and it’s very well put together. I think it’s a great value for the $20 a month, as thinking of these projects, getting all the supplies, and prepping them would take a VERY LONG time.

I thought this box would be perfect for my daughter so was sad to see it was too late to order. But I went on the website and under “shop” found this crate, and it said I could choose this one to start a subscription! Which also meant free shipping. Just letting people know that option is available (looks like you can pick from other available crates, too!)
