Surprise Baby Box February 2018 Review

Zak! Cars Kid’s Bowl

Zak! Cars Kid’s Bowl – Estimated Value $3.99

I couldn’t find this exact design online, but I found a very similar one to link to. This is a nice bowl! It’s 5 and ½ inches across with a 15 oz capacity. Melamine is a sturdy material and we have several dishes for Gideon made out of this, so I’m happy to have another. I love practical items in kids’ boxes.

Disney Imagine Ink Mess-Free Game Book – Retail Value $5.99

Mess-free coloring books like this are a toddler parents’ dream. If you’re not familiar, they’re made with special paper and a marker that only shows any color up on that specific kind of paper. That way, if the child tries to draw on anything else that isn’t the paper, it doesn’t show up or stain!

I have a couple different kinds, and they’re fantastic for independent play, restaurants, waiting rooms, car rides, and more.

Zac & Evan Toddler Boy Slippers

Zac & Evan Toddler Boy Slippers – Estimated Value $6

These slippers are cute, but they’re really not my taste. We aren’t sports people, and although my son might like them I’m worried he’d insist on wearing this instead of real shoes, unable to understand the difference between these and other shoes. I’m not sure I want to pick that battle. Shrug.

Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 3 pair – Estimated Value $4.99

These socks are fuzzy and warm, and my toddler loves them. There are three pairs, and they each have rubber grips on the bottoms, which is necessary with our hardwood floors.

Gideon’s been loving wearing these around the house and to bed, and I can still get his shoes on over them when we go out.

Verdict: Honestly, I didn’t love my first Surprise Baby Box. The item I liked most was the bowl, because I’ll get the most use out of it. We won’t use the slippers. I like the rest of the items we got, but I felt like there needed to be more. From the subscriber preferences survey when you sign up, I expected bigger brands for sure, since they straight up ask you which top baby brands are your favorites.

This box costs $29.99 plus shipping. Even if shipping were free, you’d pay about $7.50 per item. There’s not an item in here I’d pay that much for. The estimated and retail values add up to just under $21. I’m not exactly thrilled, value-wise. Hopefully, I see some better things that look more like the example boxes on their website in the future.

The Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you’ll receive a box curates specifically according to your child and profile preferences.

Coupon - Use code SURPRISE5 to save 5% off your 3, 6, or 12-month subscription!

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $29.99 + $8.32 shipping to MI, which means that each of the 4 items in the box (counting the 3-pack of socks as one item) has an average cost of $9.58.

I would be furious if that was all that come in the box given the price tag. There is nothing unique or special about the items either.

I also think there is way too much of an age disparity. If you have an infant, do you really want to be hanging on to coloring books (for a year+) or bowls for months? Crossword puzzle book in an infant box?

I would have been so mad if I had gotten this, that value is embarrassing. Who charges more for a box then the RETAIL VALUE of the items!!!! PLUS shipping. Not to mention you can get items very close to this on sites like Hollar for even cheaper. If I was you I’d be complaining.

This box could have benefited from a bath/body item or a snack.

My first thought at seeing the title of this review is that NOW they have a subscription box for everything–even unplanned pregnancy! This is much nicer than what I was expecting it to be….
