SnackNation April 2018 Review

The Cookie Department Snap Back Spiced Ginger Cookie, 1.5 oz.– Buy a 12-pack for $34.95

Oh, my. Oh, my. This was cookie perfection. It was AMAZINGLY soft, which I love in a cookie! It tasted like it came fresh from a bakery. The granulated sugar sprinkling gave it that slight crunch, and it had a real ginger taste! I'm talkin' like...your-Grandma's-signature-ginger-cookie-recipe levels of flavor. There's a touch of cayenne pepper in this confectionary masterpiece and it brings a hint of kick that's WONDERFUL.

The Cookie Department's mission is "providing a fully functional and gourmet twist to the traditional cookies we know and love." Boy, oh boy, do they succeed.

Quest Nutrition Chocolate Cookie Dough Bar, 2.12 oz.– Buy a 12-pack for $22.80

I knew there'd have to be some protein bars packed in this box of treasures! As I wrote last month, I'm not a huge fan of the fake "protein taste" that's found in a lot of sports bars. This one luckily had zero traces of that superficial flavoring—the cookie dough taste was definitely there really impressed me! And can we talk about those enormous, perfectly decadent chocolate chunks?

I'd heard of Quest bars during my time running cross country but never gave 'em a shot, and I should have! It's no Trader Joe's cookie butter, of course, but for a protein bar moonlighting as a sweet treat, this is one of the best I've ever had.

Second Nature Dark Chocolate Wholesome Medley Mix, 1.25 oz.–  Buy a 26 oz. bag for $16.99

I'm always SO GLAD when trail mix includes cashews! My fave nut! As a chocolate fiend, this was pretty much my dream. I think the nuts could have used a bit more salt to balance out the sweetness of the chocolate, but that was a minor grievance.

Rise Buddy BBQ Baked Rice Snacks, 1.40 oz. – Buy a 12-count variety pack for $18.00

These weren't as orange as I expected them to be when I poured them out of the bag! Their texture was a little funky. You know the almost-crunchy, kinda-airy texture of some gluten-free snacks? That's about what these were. The BBQ taste is smokey but subtle, so they're altogether very different from BBQ snacks you may have had before. They weren't too bad though!

MadeGood Chocolate Chip Granola Bar, 0.85 oz. – Buy a case of 6 boxes for $23.94

If you're thinking, "Wow, this kinda looks like a Rice Krispie Treat," that is because it does, indeed, look—and TASTE—like a Rice Krispie Treat. There's a hint of cocoa, and it really has that quintessential soft, fluffy, and slightly airy Rice Krispie bite. It's so adorable and tasty!

Safe + Fair Chocolate Chip Abby's Cookies, 1.00 oz. – Buy a box of 36 for $14.99

The teeniest, cutest cookies! Unfortunately, their aesthetic was more satisfying than their taste. They were pretty dry and crumbly, and there wasn't much that stood out in their flavor. I could only taste the chocolate chips at the end, despite there being lots of 'em sprinkled in there!

I will say, though, that for only 120 calories, this is a fun little treat that could be great on the go.

Torie & Howard Chewie Fruities, 4.0 oz. – Buy a 24 oz. bag for $17.85

I loved the texture of these chewie fruities! They were surprisingly soft and gentle to chew.  The three flavors were Blood Orange & Honey, Pomegranate & Nectarine, and Meyer Lemon & Raspberry. The lemon and raspberry flavor was my favorite, although it tasted more like pink lemonade to me! Still delicious.

Health Warrior Peanut Butter Cacao Protein Bar, 1.76 oz. – Buy a 12-count box for $16.25

This was another protein bar that ended up tasting better than expected. The majority of its protein is sourced from plants, which I think removed any chance of that fake protein flavor. The peanut butter flavor doesn't stand out too much, but it's a decent bar that's jam-PACKED with raw ingredients.

Appleways Whole Grain Blueberry Lemon Crispy Bites, 1 oz. – Buy a 108-count case for $44.81

MMMMM! These were wonderful! They're almost like Animal Crackers, but have the slightest uplifting, elevated taste due to the lemon. It took some effort to really find the blueberry flavor in there, but its detectable towards the end. These would be so fun to pack in lunches!

Pamela's Big Fig Raspberry Bar, 1.41 oz. – Buy a 12-count box for $19.24

Be still my 5th-grade-Fig-Newton-lovin' heart. I love Fig Newtons, so receiving a giant one was a dream come true. There was nothing fussy about these, and their simplicity made me so nostalgic and happy! The raspberry taste is very sweet, but it's balanced out by that perfect fig flavor and texture. YUMMO.

SunRype Fruit Source Flavor Strawberry Bar, 1.3 oz. – Buy a case of 25 bars for $21.14

I didn't think I'd enjoy this one, but once again, my expectations deceived me. Gummy fruit bars have usually felt kind of "useless" to snack on to me, especially because they seem to be made solely to exist as cavity risks. This one was great, though! The apple-strawberry flavor tasted very natural.

I'm curious as to whether these would be good frozen! Could be worth a try. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Popchips Nutter Puffs, 1 oz. – Buy a 72-count case for $49.99

These were BIZARRE, but a good kind of bizarre. The airy, puffy snack disintegrates soon after you start chewing, and then you're left with what tastes like literal peanut butter! Like, it truly felt like actual peanut butter appeared in my mouth. It is an authentic PB taste.

So, if you're able to move past the strange texture, this is a fun, unique snack for only (a surprising) 130 calories!

180 Snacks Blueberry Nutty Rice Bites, 1.25 oz. – Buy a pack of 8 for $14.34

These were "meh." The blueberry flavor tasted a bit artificial to me, and nothing really "popped" in terms of taste or texture, despite all the fun ingredients in 'em. I've never been a big fan of mini bites like these, but for those who are, these are pretty run-of-the-mill. A dependable mini snack.

Simply Smart Flax Essentials Bar, 1.4 oz. – Buy a 12-pack for $19.99

It's hard to explain, and it was definitely unexpected, but this bar literally tasted like a cozy bowl of oatmeal. The cinnamon and almonds really stand out and bring a gentle flavor that warmed me up inside! It has a very subtle taste, but this healthy snack tastes as good as it feels to eat.

Boulder Canyon Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, 1 oz. – Retail Value $0.99

Marvelous! Simply marvelous! The jalapeno spice on these kettle chips lingers on your tongue, which should be a pre-requisite for jalapeno-flavored ANYTHING. The potato flavor gets a chance to shine as well, as it's not too overpowered by the heat. Boulder Canyon really knows what they're doin'.

Verdict: This month's box was the best Snack Nation experience I've had yet! They don't skimp on portion sizes, which is greatly appreciated, especially when so many snacks are included to begin with. I didn't feel "protein-barred out" like I did last month. There was the perfect balance of snacks, sweets, and grab-and-go health bars in this round-up. Truly just a wonderful selection that would be great in the office or for quick and easy lunches!
