Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Scentbird for Women April 2018 Review

This month, I received Scentbird's “Scent of the Month.” You can either opt for the scent of the month or you can fill a queue with fragrances of your choosing:

There was what is basically an advertising flyer for this month’s scent, “Black Tulip” by Nest Fragrances.

Some months, you will get a new case for your fragrance, but in months where a new case doesn’t come, your glass fragrance vial is packaged inside a cardboard tube that includes directions on how to replace the fragrance vials in the holders. (I know from personal experience that you can absolutely spray the fragrance vials without them being in holders at all, but if you want to carry one around in your purse, the holders are nice to have around.)

Black Tulip by Nest Fragrances – Buy an 8 mL Rollerball for $27

All right, so I haven’t been a big fan of the Scent of the Month for the past two months, but this one, I like. (I can usually predict I’ll be a fan of fragrances with “dark” or “black” in the name – Black Opium, Black Orchid, Crystal Noir, etc.) The notes here are patchouli, plum, violet, and pink pepper. The patchouli works well in the blend and doesn’t overtake the scent, as patchouli can sometimes do, and I really like the combination of pink pepper and plum. (Some sources, including the information card, also list jasmine as a note, but the floral notes, in general, are not super strong here, which is my preference in terms of florals.)

Scentbird Melting Shower Scrub in Mango and Kiwi (0.27 fl oz)

There was a bonus sample of one of the Scentbird-branded bath and body products. You are able to choose one of these instead of (or in addition to) your fragrance pick for the month. I wasn’t sure what to expect when they started this product line, but I’ve been a fan of the products (both in terms of scent and performance) I’ve sampled from it so far. I normally use much more shower scrub than this at once, but I was able to try it out on my shoulders/upper arms and it seemed effective at exfoliating my skin and didn’t leave an oily residue.

Verdict: You can buy a rollerball of this fragrance in an 8 mL size that’s well over the cost of the subscription, so if you’re not particular about application method, you definitely come out ahead with the fragrance of the month this time. More importantly for my purposes, I love the fragrance! Scentbird is useful as a discovery service and takes the risk out of trying fragrances you’re on the fence about or haven’t heard of before. Somehow I had missed hearing about this one when it was released but I’m happy I had the opportunity to try it out.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance for your queue.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $27 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent you receive).

I am very upset with Scentbird! They added the Deck of Scarlet as one of the new options. I have a 3 product a month subscription. I ordered 2 perfumes and an eyeshadow palette. Never got the palette. I’ve tried contacting them and haven’t gotten a response. They were quick to take my money though! I guess there’s no other option left but to cancel and file a dispute with my bank. Also, I’ve been with them for awhile and I have never received cases or samples as others say they have. BEWARE!!!

FYI – This month, I realized that I never received a tracking number, went on the site, and saw that my subscription had been cancelled. I have no idea why, and did not receive any kind of email or explanation on the site.

Also, it sounds like they occasionally send extra cases or samples to MSA, which get mentioned in the reviews, but they do not send these to subscribers.

I have never received an extra case, but did get a sample this month. First time though. I think they are pushing their beauty line.

Well that’s good to know. I just know that every month the review says something like “Some months, you will get a new case for your fragrance”, but that’s simply not true. Additional cases cost $12.95, unless you are a review site getting them for free.

Thanks for the review. I added this one to my next shipment.

I was excited about Scentbird but after 4 months, I only received 1 perfume I liked. I spend 60 on finding 1 small vial of perfume I actually used…the rest for repurposed as bathroom sprays. It’s cheaper to get Sephora samplers unless you know you like the perfume you’re selecting.

I don’t have a ton of luck with the scent of the month, but I usually find their selection tools to work for me. It helps to know what *kind* of notes you like in the first place, though. I prefer spicy, woody, musky notes and I like fruits/florals a lot less. So I would never (or rarely) choose floral fragrances on my own. But I had to smell a lot of perfumes before I learned what I liked the most.

I have never received the scent of the month. I always go by notes. Though I am going to add this months scent to my queue.
