Rad and Hungry x Korea STMT Kit Stationery Review – March 2018

Rad and Hungry STMT x Korea Kit box

Rad and Hungry was sparked by founder Hen Chung's addiction to travel and office supplies. This subscription box combines the two—each kit in The Something Mighty (STMT) Collection is filled with office supplies locally sourced from around the world. Custom designs and sweet wrap jobs transform each monthly subscription box into a full-on, hands-on experience with a different destination at its focus. Each new STMT Kit is released during the first part of the month, 10 months of the year. (They work on other goodies in June and December.)

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Rad and Hungry x Korea STMT Kit March 2018 Review

So, there should have been a kit delivered in February, but nothing ever came. I kept forgetting to check up on it, and just about the time I finally said "I need to find out what happened" (about mid-March), the founder, Hen sent out an email. The part that got down to it read:

I’m making mistakes. The STMT Kit shipping schedule is bunched up, but we’re gonna get it under control. So bear with us. I’m gonna make it right ‘cause I know that RAD AND HUNGRY is a once in a lifetime dream come true afforded to me by y’all.
There will be a June and December STMT Kit. June and December are normally the months where we do NOT feature a new kit. All subscriptions will include the same number of kits.
Do you wanna share how disappointed or frustrated you are with RAD AND HUNGRY? Do it. That’s what I’m here for – grown-ass conversation because life is about relationships, learning about and earning trust, and it’s never too late for me to learn how to do better.
And for the delay on our end, we’ll take 20% off your next order. The discount is automatically applied during checkout – no coupon code to enter, nothing to remember.

Fair enough! I know this is a super small operation and appreciate that she called herself out, asked for frustrations to be heard, sent extra goodies and gave 20% off future orders to subscribers.

I just so happened to be SUPER excited for this one because she teased it via the Rad and Hungry Instagram account back in January and the Korean notebooks are TOO CUTE!

Let's crack it open!

packing list

First things first, the packing list. You'll notice the pink sticker on mine noting that I get bonus goodies for writing these fun reviews, and you can too by giving them a shout out on social media!

package wrapped in kraft paper with gold seal

Next, you'll find the first layer of awesome wrapping with kraft paper, sealed with a gold R&H sticker.

first layer unwrapped, exposing tea + candy

Once I unwrapped that layer, I found the latest passport stamp, some goodies, and another wrapped package.

Korean tea and candy

Korean Tea & Candies

I'll get to the passport stamp in a little bit, but here are the candies and tea I received! Hen always likes to include little treats from the featured country.

"extra booty" envelope on top of notebook with pen

Under the wrapped package was an envelope filled with "extra booty" as an apology for missing the February delivery, plus my bonus items from sharing on social media.

Cute!

Here's the other side.

Extra Booty Writing Utensils

Yay! I got a Feel Luck Office Big ballpoint pen, a Dong-A Office Pencil, and a white Rad and Hungry Pencil declaring "Pencils are the Sh*t". I agree!!

Bonus pen and notebook for sharing on social media

Bonus Notebook and Java Power Signpen

My bonus items for sharing my experience are this super cute notebook and a marker pen (the same kind Hen uses to write notes in each package!).

How cute are the boy and girl on the cover of this pink notebook with red lined pages? They appear on the inside cover as well.

Java Power Signpen

I love this marker pen! It's handsome black and white striped body houses a blackfelt tip marker that writes with ease.

Rad and Hungry STMT x Korea passport stamp Rad and Hungry STMT x Korea passport stamp in passport

STMT x Korea Passport Stamp

The print on the stamp this month has a design of a woman in traditional Korean garb (which I now know to be called "hanbok", thanks Juliya!) with pencils and the phrase "Korean Drama Strong Mama" down the side. I love it! I paperclipped it straight into my Passport, per usual. Can you believe it's my fifth?

The print mirrors the passport stamp as always, in fluorescent orange ink and has a personal note from Hen on the other side.

The Low Down

The last recurring item is Hen's one-page zine called The Low Down which tells a story of her trip to source the very items we are receiving today. I love when they include her family and this one is especially lovely to read about since it was the first time her Mother had returned with her to her homeland after 40 years, due to "Korean Drama". In the end, all was well, and we learn where the phrase "Korean Drama, Strong Mama" from the print comes in.

Now on to the featured stationery items, direct from Korea!

unwrapped package with pen, paper cutter, and notebooks

Eeeeek! I love the colors! Hen had sent out an email a while back asking for preferences on the available animal notebooks and I can tell by the colors that this was my first choice!

Korean Hanji Journal in Pink - Retail Value $15.00

Gahhhh this notebook is just SO COOL and perfect! I love the pink, purple and mint colors with polka dots randomly on this textured cover. The inside reveals 94 blank pages of traditional Korean handcrafted paper made with the inner bark of mulberry trees (called hanji) that is so beautiful it makes me hesitant to ever use it! It's just too lovely!

front of Walrus Notebook back of Walrus Notebook inside of of Walrus Notebook

Walrus Notebook

LOOK AT THIS WALRUS NOTEBOOK! LOOK AT IT! THE WALRUS IS WEARING A GOSH DANG PINK HOODIE! I will not and I can not handle this. It is just too flipping adorable and I am deceased. The inside is lined like your average notebook, but the hump from the top of his head continues on the inside of the pages which I find charming. I've been wanting to start a notebook to track my thoughts and feelings, and it might just have to be this one because it makes me so stupidly happy.

Pink Paper Cutter

This little retractable blade is nothing too unique, but I love that it's two-toned pink and that when the blade becomes dull, you can just break off the tip to expose a fresh edge. You can use this as a cool replacement for a boring old x-acto knife.

Monami Red Retractable Ballpoint Pen

I love the fun design to this black and red plastic pen. It has fun little cartoonish icons all over it, including a video game controller, clouds, lightning bolts, and explosions. The ink is red too!

writing samples for pens

Here are writing samples for the pens. "Hello" is my favorite word to write when testing a pen. Can you tell?

Verdict: This Rad and Hungry STMT Kit is by far my favorite. The cuter-than-heck notebooks, the unique pens, and the extra goodies have got my heart going pitter patter and as I've always said, the unboxing experience of this sub is second to none. I hope future deliveries can hold up to this one!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It looks like this kit was so awesome that it sold out. If you subscribe today, your first kit should be April.

Value Breakdown: For $31, I received a screened print, a screened passport stamp, three notebooks, three pens, two pencils, and a paper cutter (plus some candy + tea). It's hard to put values on these items since some are handmade, some are hard to find, and overall I find the value to be in the whole experience.

Hen’s ownership/apology was amazing, but the mom story—wow. How tender and wonderful. I want to send her mother a letter. And I may subscribe just because of that vignette.

Juliya

Traditional “Korean garb” is called hanbok.
As for the proverb written at the bottom of the Korean print that reads “Even monkeys fall from the trees” , actually it’s a Japanese proverb, not Korean, but taking into consideration the history between the two countries, I’m sure in Korea they have a similar expression.
As for the kit itself , I thought there was a word “Germany” at the top, but I failed to see any Germany-related items. All of them are Korean. Am I missing something?

Blerg! Holly is right, that was just a copy/paste error on my part. Thanks for catching!
Thanks for the info on hanbok and the proverb as well! I’m always learning new things through these boxes (and the MSA community)!

Holly

Germany was reviewed in January. That was an error in the above review.
