Facet Jewelry Box is a new subscription box from the editors at Facet Jewelry and Bead & Button magazine. They offer two versions: the “Quick and Easy Stringing” box and the “Bead Stitching” box, so you can choose a subscription based on your skill level and interests, as well as the amount of time you want to invest in the projects.

Facet Jewelry Box Quick & Easy Stringing March 2018 Review

This is still a fairly new subscription so I really didn’t know what was in store:

The first thing you see when you open the box is this full-color booklet. I haven’t shown you all of the pages inside, because part of the subscription fee is for the projects that are included, but I did show one page to give you a feel for the level of detail.

This is a really nice booklet, honestly, but I’d expect nothing less from the folks at Bead & Button (I’ve been a subscriber for awhile now). There are also links to online resources if you need a little help with a technique.

Project 1: Crystal and Pearl Dangles

These were pretty simple. I have never been very good at making wrapped loops, so I’m glad for getting the chance to practice. I found it much easier with the 24 gauge wire (what is going through the cubes) than with the headpins.

This is a case of me not reading the direction very thoroughly, though. I wasn’t supposed to wrap both loops on the wire through the cubes until I had attached the chain. Oops. I saved the day with some matching jump rings from my stash. And learned my lesson for next time (or did I? see below).

And yeah, my bead design board is covered in cat hair. I leave it out on the table and Angus walks across it all the time.

Project 1: Crystal and Pearl Dangles

Anyway, I think these look pretty classy and elegant and they were quite simple. If you are new to beading and want quick results, this is a pretty non-frustrating project.

Project 2: 3-Tiered Drop Necklace

You will need a few supplies to complete the projects for this box. You can use them over and over again, though, for this subscription and your own designs. You’ll want wire-cutters and several pairs of pliers. You can get beginner sets on Amazon or from nearly every jewelry supply retailer out there that will have enough to get you started. You’ll also want some crimping pliers.

3-Tiered Drop Necklace

And here we have the second instance of Ragan not paying attention. This will fit me but it is very short. You are supposed to cut the wire on which you string the beads to different lengths, depending on the tier. This way, you can string more beads on the longer pieces of wire, so the tiers will fall/drape more easily and are different in length. But, I didn’t remember to check that the tiers were actually different lengths as I attached them to the clasp. So they are pretty similar.  My fault entirely. (I also pay for this version of the box, in addition to the one I review, so I have a chance to do a do-over…)

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Facet Jewelry Box. I feel like the projects were well-chosen and definitely fit the “quick and easy” description. I found the materials provided to be of high quality and I thought the instructional booklet was excellent (and well-edited; I didn’t notice any errors, though as we have seen, I did not read it as thoroughly as I ought to have). I feel like the people who will enjoy this version of the box the most are (1) people new to beading or (2) people who like to bead but don’t have a ton of time.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the April box. Boxes go out after the 20th and people who sign up before the 15th will get that month’s box. If you sign up after the 15th, you may still be able to get that month’s box but this is not guaranteed.

I think it would have been helpful to calculate the value of the materials so one could get an idea of ‘value for money’ – $25 is a good chunk of change. The materials didn’t seem anywhere near that value. I think the kit is great if you don’t want to spend time looking on YouTube and having to order or get to a store to get the materials.
