Birchbox’s The Mascara Try-It Kit is a discovery kit featuring five Birchbox best-selling mascaras. Just like The 2018 Lip Service Kit, this is packaged in a clear ziplock bag rather than a box

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This review is for The Mascara Try-It Kit, which is $15 plus $5 shipping. This box is still available for purchase!

Birchbox Mascara Try It Kit Review

Normally these Birchbox Discovery Kits come with an info sheet, however, this one did not.

Stila Cosmetics HUGE™ Extreme Lash Mascara, 6 ml

Stila Cosmetics HUGE™ Extreme Lash Mascara, 6 ml - Estimated Value $10.61 (buy the full-size version for $23)

I have always been a big fan of this mascara. It gives me a good boost of volume and curl in a jet black formula, giving me that big bold lash look I love. It doesn't smudge on my under-eyes but it can be prone to the occasional clump (which is the only downfall to this mascara, IMO).

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, 3 mL

Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, 3 mL - Estimated Value $17.90 (Buy the full sized version for $30)

This mascara was prime in the definition and lengthening department, and it was easy to apply without worrying about clumps. This mascara I think could potentially bring the major volume, but it'll take multiple coats to get there.

Laura Geller New York LashBOSS Mascara, 4 mL

Laura Geller New York LashBOSS Mascara, 4 mL - Estimated Value $6.91 (buy the full-size version for $24)

One thing I really liked about this mascara is the unique brush. One end of the brush has long bristles, while the other end is short like a comb. I was really able to comb through my lashes while coating and lengthening them thanks to this unique brush, and I liked this mascara more than I initially thought I would. It didn't give me major volume, but it was easy to define each lash without having clumps.

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara, 4 mL

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara, 4 mL - Estimated Value $13 (Buy the full sized version for $26)

This mascara didn't really do it for me. The formula on the brush was a bit dry so I felt like it wasn't coating my lashes, and it didn't give me that jet black volume I really look for in a mascara. This mascara also irritated my eyes a bit, so this isn't a keeper for me.

Birchbox Mirror

Birchbox Mirror

In the description, Birchbox says this kit includes 5 best sellers. Apparently, this mirror is a best seller because there are only four mascaras included in the kit. I am not really sure what makes this mascara a best-seller— it's a mirror. It doesn't come in a case, so if I were to just toss it into my purse it would get dinged up pretty easily. I couldn't find this mirror (or any Birchbox mirrors) on the Birchbox website, so again I am not sure how this qualifies as a “best seller.”

The Verdict: I normally love the discovery kits from Birchbox, but this one fell flat. The packaging (no info sheet, each product inside the bag coming in a plastic bag) combined with the promise of “5 best-sellers” (but only getting four mascaras and a mirror that isn't sold on the website) honestly makes me feel like Birchbox had a lot of mascara gift-with-purchases left over and they decided to make it into a discovery kit. At least the Laura Geller, Stila, and Bobbi Brown mascaras are good quality mascaras that I enjoyed trying out.

The total estimated value for the mascaras is $48.42, which is more than double the $20 box cost ($15 + $5 shipping), but falls short of the $53 promised value.

The Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if I sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available!

Coupon - Check out all the free gift with purchase coupons, and don't forget to add your free sample pack with any $35 purchase.

Value Breakdown: At $20 ($15 + $5 shipping) for the kit, here is what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Stila Mascara: $4.38
  • Bobbi Brown Mascara: $7.39
  • Laura Geller Mascara: $2.85
  • Eyeko Mascara: $5.37
  • Birchbox Mirror: N/A

Wow! You have amazing eyes. That mascara didn’t work nearly as good for me.

The mascara truly worked well in this review. I have tried the stila hi ive lashes mascara before and love it. I wear it all of the time. It is my preferred mascara right now. I on plan on trying 4 o the mascara to see how they perform against the stila aa well. I can’t wait.

Loving the way this review was done. You can really see the mascara perform or not.

Thanks Michelle! That was my goal.

If i remember correctly, that mirror came in a december box as a freebie.

It’s a good price for the samples, but I’ve tried pretty much all of them.

I really liked how you reviewed the mascaras. I’ve always thought showing one eye with- and one eye without the mascara was the best way to demonstrate to readers how a mascara could make eyelashes look (of course, we’d still need to take your word for it on how it wears, smudges, comes off easily, etc. 🙂 ).

Was this sent for review purposes or did you buy it? If you bought it yourself, you ought to email them and tell them they only sent four but clearly stated five best sellers . That’s b.s 9’ their part!

At the beginning of the review it’s stated that MSA paid for the box. 🙂

Hi Jill! While the website link states “5 best sellers”, it also only shows four mascaras plus the mirror, and the description matches that. I believe I received everything that was supposed to come in this box. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I need some basic makeup advice. How do you get definition on your lower lash line instead of just the separate lashes? Do you wiggle the wand against the base of the lashes? I really like the way your lashes look along the outer corner of your eye and I can’t make mine look like that!

I have to use primer first… or it is everywhere under my eye. Then I would get a brush like the Tarte Tartest brush. That one really gives definition!

Hi Michelle. When I apply mascara I always focus on the outer half of my eyes, so I think more product ends up there compared to the inner half. I also do multiple coats and roll the brush along my lash line when applying. Hope this helps!

Iggy'sRock

Umm it states 5 mascara… I only count 4.

Jessicups

On the website it lists these 4 mascaras and says “mirror” so they never claim to be 5.

Iggy'sRock

Lousy. State the truth. 4 mascaras, 1 crappy mirror.
