Rocksbox is a designer jewelry styling and renting service. Members pay a flat rate every month to get unlimited access to the Rocksbox collection and the option to buy the pieces they love most at a discounted price.

rocksbox march 2018 unboxing

Upon subscribing, you'll take a "style survey," so Rocksbox can suggest jewelry pieces that fit your style. You can also browse their catalog and add pieces to your wish list. Each month, Rocksbox will curate sets of three pieces to send your way, including at least one piece from your wishlist. I've been leaving my list empty so that Rocksbox can do all the picking for me. What can I say, I like the element of surprise!

Try on the items in the box, and wear them as long as you'd like. From there, you have two choices. If you love any of the pieces enough to want to keep them, you can put your monthly "Shine Credit" towards your purchase.

The info booklet contains a little note from the stylist who worked on my order. As she mentions, there's a page in your Rocksbox account that lets you leave feedback on your items, so that they can better curate your jewelry in the future!

Kendra Scott Carole Necklace in Gold and Slate Cats Eye - Cost to Keep $90.00

I am loving this necklace! I find the gray hue of the oversized crystal pendant to be so mesmerizing—it has a cloudy, mysterious quality to it that's really magical. The pendant is long (the chain is 30" long and the pendant is just over 2" long), which is an easy silhouette to throw on over the tees or LBDs in my wardrobe to give 'em bit of ethereal glitz.

Aster Cress Drops in Gold and Peach Mother of Pearl - Retail Value $75.00, Cost to Keep $63.00

I really love the mother of pearl finish of these diamond-shaped danglers, but they don't hang as neatly as I might like. I think if they were made of just one giant diamond shape, they'd be more my style, but the different panels keep twisting in different directions in a way that I'm kinda "meh" about. They're about 2" long, so they're an unmissable statement piece, especially against my dark hair. I think they're pretty cool and would look awesome on someone with slightly different style.

Perry Street Roxanne Statement Earrings - Retail Value $60.00, Cost to Keep $51.00

Yowza! These earrings have it all—chain fringe, rhinestones, multicolored gems, modern flair, vintage vibes... I kinda love them! They're definitely a pair that I'd be more likely to wear to a fancier occasion, rather than day-to-day. (My everyday style is just a little too understated to carry these glamorous earrings.) They hang about 2" long and are surprisingly comfortable for being so loaded with crystals and chain. (Love the sheen of that gunmetal chain, by the way.)

The Verdict: This was a very cool order from Rocksbox! I love the variety of pieces they gave me to play with—from sleek and minimal to ornate and extra-special. As someone with a somewhat ephemeral taste in clothes and accessories, I really love the convenience (and cost-effectiveness) of this subscription. Because I'm renting these items, I pay a fraction of the cost that I would to buy them all. And rather than crowding my jewelry box with pieces I get for a specific event and rarely wear again, I can constantly switch pieces out for something new (or bite the bullet and buy pieces I love—like that big gray pendant—at a reduced price). Like, seriously, think about it—it cost me just $7.00 per item to rent these pieces, all of which arrived in great condition in an adorable box. (I'm starting to collect those boxes for storage/crafts, too!) That's a fraction of what each piece would cost to buy at retail!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Every box is different and packed based on the customer's tastes and what's available at the time. You can, however, give the Rocksbox stylists a nudge by adding your favorite pieces to your wishlist!

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $21.00 to rent, which ends up being $7.00 per piece. The Kendra Scott necklace was the only piece that didn't have a discounted price via Rocksbox unless I keep all three pieces and get $10.00 off my order. (It retails on the Kendra Scott site for the same amount). The total retail value of each item is $225.00.

If I keep all three pieces, I pay the member price of $204.00. If I keep all three pieces, the price is $194.00, and the $21.00 I spent on my membership goes towards any purchase I make. Proportionally, that would mean that I'd pay the following for each piece:

  • Necklace: $77.60
  • Diamond-shaped earrings: $64.67
  • Fringe earrings: $51.73

This was one of the worst subscription boxes I did. I got a 3 month promo code from a beauty vlogger and signed up. Every month for the next 3 months I’d get charged and I’d have to email them to remove the charge. What is the point in a free code if you keep charging the person? It was such a pain. My first box was good, and the second was awful. The third wasn’t even close to my style. Some of the jewelry definitely looked and felt “used” and I didn’t get any of the name brands (Kate Spade, Kendra Scott) they advertise but more the brand they only seem to carry. Not worth it in my opinion. I did buy a necklace and earrings (from the first box) to use my credits.

Do you swap out your pieces multiple times a month, or do you usually only send back once a month? How long does it take from when you ship out your return until you receive the next batch of jewelry?

I just finished my first month after receiving my first box. I decided to keep one item and return the other two. I put them in the mail two days ago and tonight received my notification it was received. The email had my next curated selections included with the option to swap out any of them from the list of items I added to my wishlist. I swapped one and was notified they would ship within 24 hours. I was shocked at how fast they were. I’m very happy so far!

Anyone else have a problem signing up? Once i get to the email & password creation section it wont let me create a password. It keeps telling me it has to be 6 characters, then says i have 5 characters used, i enter the final 6th one (i’ve tried numbers, characters, uppercase, and lowercase) it tells me “please match the requested form”. Ive tried just about every combination i can think of, all exactly 6 letters as it also gives u an error if you go over 6 letters too and it refuses to allow me to complete the sign up process.

Does anyone know what is required to cancel this subscription? I’ve become a bit wary lately about signing up, in case it takes a phone call to cancel a subscription.

Anna Reilly

Hi Kelly! Looks like it does take a phone call. Their FAQ page says that you can cancel by “calling 1-877-478-0450 Monday – Friday between 9am – 5pm PST.”

This might be the month that pushes me over the edge. Because when I really think about it, how often do I wear my individual pieces of jewelry? My only concern is loss or damage? How do they handle that?

Reply ButtonReply

Anna Reilly

Hi Amy!

Rocksbox is cool with a little wear and tear, according to their FAQ page:

“Don’t worry – it happens! Your membership fee covers normal wear for all products. If there slight damage or wear (e.g. lost earring back, a stone falls out, etc.) this is fully covered!”

But if things get more complicated, they suggest reaching out:

“Please note that excessive damage is not covered, and any damage will be evaluated when the item is returned to our warehouse. If you have any damage or loss issues, please email us immediately at [email protected].”

Hope that helps!

Wait, can we keep those boxes?! I’ve been sending them back!

Thanks for reviewing this and talking about the price of the Kendra Scott necklace! I’ve been on the fence about subbing to them to purchase KS jewelry, but hadn’t been able to find their pricing. It doesn’t seem like a great deal to buy used KS at the full retail price, so I know this box isn’t for me. Earrings defnitely look super cool on!

Shana

I’m so glad you got those earrings, because they look so much nicer with you modeling them than they do on the website. Definitely adding to my wishlist!

Anna Reilly

Yay! I’m glad you like them, Shana! They’re pretty darn cool in real life.
