Quirky Crate March 2018 "90s Edition" Box Review
This month's Quirky Crate is all about the 90s! The info card for the box lists out all of the products in the box. On the back, there's a spotlight on this month's featured artist, Lisa Liidemann of Studio Marimo. You are going to LOVE the pin she created, folks!!!
VHS Enamel Pin by Marimo Pins - Retail Value $9.50, Listed Value $10.00
How. Freakin'. Cool. As someone who got to enjoy all 10 years of the 90s, I can attest that few things are more iconic than this rainbow-striped VHS sleeve. This is one of those blank VHS tapes that you'd pop in a camcorder or use to record your favorite episode of Seinfeld when it aired on TV. I love this crisp, clever design. It's only about 1-inch square, so it'll be a subtle statement-maker on my jacket. But I have no doubt that if someone does see it, they'll have the same "WHOA, DUDE!" reaction that I did seeing it for the first time!
Hamburger Shaped Crossbody Purse - Listed Value $18.00
Welcome to Good Purse.
Home of the Good Purse.
Can I take your order?
Heh heh, get it? No? No Good Burger fans out there?! Oh, my joke was just too corny for you? Okay, that I can understand.
This burger purse is hilarious. Sure, it's only about 9" wide, so it's on the smaller side, storage-wise. It's not the highest quality—it's definitely made from some kind of faux-leather material, and it smells more like plastic than a McDonalds. Still, there's no chance you're not going to get noticed wearing this zip-shut bag around. It's just sooo playful and kitschy and fun. There's a little deli near me that does a monthly burger night (including veggie burgers!!!)—what a great excuse to debut this quirky bag!
90's Babe Sticker Pack - Listed Value $6.75
How cute are these pastel stickers?! They range from around 2 to 2.5 inches in length, and each sticker has a super smooth, satiny finish. The "girl talk" phone sticker is my fave, just because I remember always wanting my own big plastic cordless phone when I was little. And that Tamagotchi egg? Ugh. Everyone, please pour one out for all of the virtual pets that we lost due to my bad parenting. RIP to all my Tamagotchi... and my Nano Pets... and that Giga Pet I had for like a week before I lost it...
Be Happy Patch - Listed Value $5.00
One thing I remember about the 90s was that everyone was just trying to recreate the 70s. Rainbows, flared jeans, and yes, more smiley faces than you could shake a stick at. I had a binder (unfortunately, no, it was not a Trapper Keeper) that was covered in smileys depicting a vast array of emotional states. (Like emoji, but less... exciting.) There were smiley stickers given out. Smileys were all over pencil toppers and in the center of t-shirts. It was, in short, a thing. So I'm glad a smiley worked its way into this box! This patch is made of super shimmery, glittery pink material and is about 2.5" wide. I don't know if I'll put it on my jacket, but I think it'll make my canvas backpack look a lot more on trend with the 90s throwback styles I've been seeing lately!
Partners in Crime Friendship Bracelets - Listed Value $14.00
Yay! I love friendship bracelets! Even at 30, I have half of a friendship necklace that I wear time to time. (The other half is with my friend Jenna in LA—whaddup Jenna!!!) This set of gold bracelets comes packaged on a card shaped like a composition notebook (which has been my absolute favorite notebook ever since I saw Harriet the Spy). Hold the sides of the charms together, and they spell out "Partners in Crime". Each bracelet is about 9 inches long, the last 2 inches of which is chain that you can loop the lobster claw clasp through. Cute!
Beach Please Baseball Cap - Listed Value $18.00
Oh wow, I love that these "dad hat" style baseball caps are back in style. This white canvas hat is decorated with a "Beach Please" graphic that feels a bit The Little Mermaid-ish to me. I do kind of wish it was embroidered on, rather than printed, just because of the risk of it rubbing off or cracking. But it's a cute hat—the perfect hat to wear with, say, a neon one-piece bathing suit and bike shorts while you rollerblade down the beach.
Troll Pencil - Listed Value $3.00
I don't know about these newfangled Hollywood Trolls. They're all colorful and clothed! Back in myyyy day, Trolls were mildly unpleasant looking and fully nude! I'm glad to see that the creepy traditional troll style is featured here as a cute little pencil topper. You can pop the topper off of the pencil and just sit the troll on your desk (it stands up pretty well on its own) or even tuck it into a terrarium for some kitschy appeal. The pencil itself has a cute Quirky Crate slogan on it and sharpens nicely. I miss writing in pencil. Real, wooden, walk-to-the-front-of-class-to-sharpen-it pencils. They have such a satisfying scratch to them as they write. Typing on a computer does erase a little more cleanly, though...
Ring Pop - Listed Value $1.00 (Buy 40 here for $24.48)
Ring Pops instantly take me back to public pool snack bars in the summer. There's something so appealing about the idea of a lollipop you can wear. And there's plenty of fun to be had, too. (I probably proposed to, like, 20 kids with Ring Pops over the course of my childhood. Never made it to the altar.)
Sailor Moon Socks - Listed Value $7.00
Oh yes. Oh yes yes yes yes yes. I am VERY into these socks, just as I was VERY into Sailor Moon. (And still am, let's be real...) Each of these pink socks features an intarsia knit Artemis (Sailor V's guardian, who has the form of a cat but is also a human-like alien being... it's a whole thing) on the ankle. The socks are soft and relatively thin, so they'll be great as the months get warmer. I am sooo excited to wear these socks! I am fangirling OUT!
Verdict: Nostalgia overload! I had so much fun digging through this 90s-themed box. I feel like they did a great job of hitting on so many facets of 90s-ness that I had totally forgotten about. The smileys, the Troll dolls... it was really cool seeing what they came up with. It's a pricier box (it cost about $40.00 for me), but I feel like the happiness I feel unboxing these brightly colored packages each month makes it worth it to me. If you're worried you might not use everything you got, or if certain things aren't the quality you'd look for, I can totally understand skipping this one. But if you have some room in your budget, I can attest that it makes a really awesome present for yourself. (Or for someone else! I think this would be such a good gift or college care package.)
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order soon to get the March box! Order by the 13th of the month to get that month's box. Boxes ship of the 15th of each month.
Value Breakdown: This box cost $40.94 (price + US shipping), though I estimate that I got about $82.25 worth of products inside. The value of the box listed on the info card varies by $0.50 since they listed the pin at $10.00 but I found it online for $9.50. Since most of those values are based on the listed values given by the info card (most of the products were Quirky Crate products or otherwise hard to find online), I'm hesitant to use that $82.25 number to show how much each product was worth, proportionally. Instead, I'll just say that, given the price I paid for the box in total ($40.94), I ended up paying an average of $4.55 per product.
