Pupjoy is a fully customizable subscription box for dogsTreats are made in the US, often from smaller or artisan producers. You can select a box for one or multiple dogs, a box containing treats only, toys and accessories only or all three categories of items. Other choices include grain free, protein sensitive, and organic, toy preferences, dog size, and frequency you’d like to receive boxes.

This is a review of the “Grande” sized box, which includes 5-7 items and starts at $39.00. I chose the “Toys & Treats” option, with grain-free treats and a variety of toys (not just plush). I selected “Large” for the dog size, which is 50-100 pounds. (My old boy, Oliver, is a Border Collie / Lab mix who weighs about 51 pounds right now.) The total cost of this specific box ended up being $44.00.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Pupjoy March 2018 Review

Pupjoy can vary a lot from subscriber to subscriber depending on what parameters you select during sign-up.

Each box includes an insert directing you to where you can find more information on the items you received, the potential for referral rewards, and even how you can help donate more to animal shelters through the Helping Paws program!

Animaganza AnimaFlingers (SuperSize) – Retail Value $11.00

This toy was SUBSTANTIAL! It's durably made for easy throwing through "flick" technology. There's a large hole on one end of the bone, and you can simply use it to flick and throw the toy far with just your finger!

They also recommend filling the hole with peanut butter and freezing it for a fun, lickable treat. And when it comes to that, the best part is that it's dishwasher safe.

I took Oliver outside to see if he'd want to fetch the toy with me. He may be 12 years old, but he LOVES sprinting and playing! This toy didn't strike his fancy, unfortunately. He would jump after it, sniff it, and run back to me without bringing it with him!

I took their cue and filled the treat with peanut butter, and: voila! Oliver was stickin' this toy like peanut butter...on...a dog. Ba-doom-tissss.

Lucky Premium Treats Chicken Jerky Straws – Retail Value $7.00

The next goodie out of the box was a pack of chicken jerky straws! I could not even snap a photo of Oliver enjoying his. That's how quickly he scarfed it down after I broke it up into smaller, individual bites for him.

These straws are made from 98% fat-free, chicken breast, and are gluten-free and grain-free with no preservatives, hormones, chemicals, additives, or fillers.

4 Paws Butcher Shop Artisan Pork Jerky – Retail Value $13.00

The fanciest dog delicacy I ever did see! These pork jerky pieces looked GOURMET. They're made by slowly roasting pork on open racks, which locks in the natural flavor of their prime cuts while also preserving them as snacks so they don't need to be refrigerated. There are no chemicals, additives, or preservatives to be found!

The pieces themselves are quite large—I'd say about 5-inches long. So we broke one up and Oliver gobbled it RRRIGHT up.

Premier Meat Market 8” Odor-Free Bully Stick – Estimate Retail Value $2.00

These were included in a previous Pupjoy box reviewed by Ragan, and as she wrote there, this seems to be a wholesale-only treat, so the price is estimated. This bully stick is meant for gnawing, and Oliver had an okay time with it.

I think the fact that it's odor-free made it a little less enticing to him, but he did commence chewing very soon after I gave it to him.

Soda Pup Life Ring Treat Dispenser – Retail Value $14.00

It took me a second to realize what the heck this adorable toy was meant for, but I looked online and learned of its treat-dispensing destiny. You simply insert treats inside the rim on the back of the toy to give your pup a challenge!

Oliver is the most food-motivated dog I know, so we placed a few pieces of his dry food inside the rim and he went AT IT. It only took him about 90-seconds to catch 'em all, but I can't wait to hide more kibble bits in the toy next time so he has a challenging scavenger hunt on his hands! (Well, paws.)

Premier Meat Market Beef Jerky Chew – Estimated Retail Value $3.00

This is another treat from the same seemingly wholesale brand, so I estimated its value based on similar treats. This treat definitely had a beef smell to it which hooked Oliver IMMEDIATELY. He woofed it down! I do wish there was some more information included about this and other wholesale items, however.

Sodapup Super Veggie Treats, 4 oz. – Estimated Retail Value $7.00

Ragan received these veggie treats in her Pupjoy Power Chewer box this month, as well. As she wrote, they're not yet available online and are very new to the market, so I estimated their value. The bag itself says they're produced exclusively for Pupjoy!

Now, Oliver will eat literally anything, so he enjoyed these, but I must say: they smelled pretty gross. They're free of grains and contain 5 veggies: broccoli, kale, spirulina, and kelp. They have a crumbly coating on them that felt weird to touch, but Oliver definitely enjoyed 'em!

Verdict: I loved the snacks included in this box. They were all natural and grain-free. Oliver doesn't have an existing allergy or resistance to grains, but I figured it'd be a treat to give him a lil' protein boost! The one caveat I'd have with snacks is that I wish more information was available online for the wholesale selections.

The toys were so-so in terms of excitement. Oliver wasn't too thrilled by the flingable bone, so we simply ended up only using it as a peanut-butter holder. And, when ya think about it, we could easily just have used a spoon for that! Overall, the items themselves were definitely, definitely high-quality, which makes the $6.28 value per item almost worth it, especially when it comes to the all-natural treats and pricey toys. An added toy that was more enticing and chewable (because this wasn't the Power Chewer box!) could have made it feel like I got more bang for my buck.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would likely be April’s. Also, box content can vary a lot based on your dog’s profile quiz. (Many of these items are available in the Pupjoy shop, however!)

Coupon – Use code MSABONUS to get free bonus goodies with your first order. 2 extra items with any Uno Box plan, 3 extra on Grande or Power Chewer plans.

Value Breakdown: Since a few of these items aren't listed online, I wasn't able to calculate the received-value for each item. So in the overall scheme of things, at $44.00 for this particular box, I paid approximately $6.28 per item.

Thank you so, so much, Jann! My lil bud Oliver passed away suddenly this week, just a few days after this review was posted. 😔 He lived a long, love-filled life and I am so grateful I got to spend a bit of his last days reviewing doggy subscription boxes with him! He deserved all of its spoils and then some! Thanks again for your kind words. ❤️

Is there an option for this subscription to opt out of certain treat items like the bully sticks?
My dog has had them before but I’m a bit grossed out by beef pizzle being a treat and I’m definitely interested in their box.
When I didn’t know what beef pizzle was I bought a big pack and eventually donated them to a local shelter.

Oh….my…gosh. Anna, I didn’t know what a beef pizzle was until I just Googled it now! What?! I am SO GLAD you commented and led me to this information! Haha, I certainly don’t think I’d feel comfortable using those as treats again, either. From what I’ve seen on Pupjoy’s site, you can choose their “Protein Sensitive” plan, which will omit any beef, chicken, or dairy products.

While they don’t have an option to opt-out of specific treats, you could always try chatting with their customer service! I wish you luck! (And thanks again 🐶)

Thanks, I’ll reach out to them. I dont think there’s an issue with the bully sticks for most people but for me personally had I known it is what it is I wouldn’t have purchased it.
