BBQ Box February 2018 Review

The card that’s included boasts a recipe from Mr. Mixon himself, offering insight on how to use all of the delicious goodies that are in the box!

This month’s box has a great recipe - grilled, marinated flank steak! I actually think flank steak is a great, underrated cut, and I think getting a big piece and doing this treatment would make for several awesome meals. The recipe recommends marinating the meat for 72 hours, which is actually a pretty long time! Myron provides a recipe for a homemade horseradish sauce to serve the meat with, and if I had leftovers, I’d love to put the steak and the sauce on a baguette for a next-level steak sammie the next day.

Craft Spice Blends Whiskey Maple Smoke, ½ cup jar

Craft Spice Blends Whiskey Maple Smoke, ½ cup jar - Retail Value $8.95

The flavors this month are ones I really love, especially maple! This seasoning is so good; the maple is nice and sweet but is perfectly balanced by the smoke. I can taste paprika, which is likely where the color for this rub came from, as well as some garlic and other herbs. This is going to be awesome on steak, but I think it would be great on pork, too.

Bluegrass Microbrewed Soy Sauce, 100 ML

Bluegrass Microbrewed Soy Sauce, 100 ML - Retail Value $7.00

I was so excited to see craft soy sauce in this box! I’ve vaguely heard about small-batch soy sauce and this stuff is fermented in repurposed bourbon barrels, which I think is genius. It has a really nice balance of sweetness and smoke, just like the seasoning mix! This soy sauce is amazing, and I think it would be great as a raw element in a dish. I really want to make my own poke bowls this summer, and I think this soy would be awesome over raw tuna or yellowtail.

Vaughn Wood Products Alder Gourmet Wood Chips, 8 oz. sample – Estimated Value $1.25 (Buy a 12 lb. box for $30.00)

I love that some of these boxes come with wood chips! Alder, in particular, has a really delicate flavor, which is nice because smoke can sometimes be an overwhelming flavor. I would maybe try it with the flank steak, but this would be such a great wood for smoking some salmon on the grill this summer.

TP Old Fashioned “Grilled Sensation” Beef Jerky, 1.5 oz

TP Old Fashioned “Grilled Sensation” Beef Jerky, 1.5 oz - Retail Value $4.99

As always, there’s a snack in the box to enjoy while you’re cooking! This month’s jerky was a beef variety, and it was chosen because its salt content was similar to that of the soy sauce in the box. It had a nice smoky flavor, and wasn’t too chewy, which is really nice.

Verdict: I thought this BBQ Box had a ton of great elements, and I liked the recipe a lot! This box encourages a long marinating time, which I think is interesting, and I think my husband’s gonna go bananas for the horseradish sauce. I was thrilled to see the soy sauce this month, and the seasoning mix this month is one of my favorites so far.

Based on my calculations, the estimated value of this box is $22.19, a bit lower than the box cost of $32.54 ($24.99 a month + $7.55 for PGH shipping), but craft soy sauce is something I would’ve never found on my own, and I really do think that having a barbecue expert curate these items and offer his know-how on all things barbecue offers extra value to this subscription.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you sign up today, you get the welcome box as your first. BBQ Box has so many new sign-ups per month they’ve designated a welcome box as the first box to make sure they have enough in stock for all subscribers. Then, the following month, you receive your first regular BBQ Box.

From BBQ Box:

Due to a large, unknown number of monthly sign-ups we have to have 1 box as a welcome kit (version 1.0 of each box) ready by the shipping date so we have enough in stock for all of our new customers. For that reason we order thousands of items for the three Welcome Boxes, ready to go since the shipping window (25th-30th) is so small after the cutoff time (the 24th), so we can get you your box asap.

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $24.99 + $7.55 shipping, which means that each of the 4 items in the box has an average cost of $8.14.
