Barkbox Super Chewer February 2018 Box closed

BarkBox is the most popular dog subscription box. They now offer a Super Chewer Box version for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 87 pounds right now.)

Super Chewer February 2018 “Paradise Unleashed” Review

BarkBox custom produces most of their treats and toys, so everything always nicely revolves around a theme:

The information card varies month-to-month in terms of style but I definitely appreciate the creativity that goes into it.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew – Retail Value $5

I think this item is pretty self-explanatory. (I love how the product page at the Barkbox Shop says “it’s best not to think about where this delicious dried dog treat came from.”) The BarkBox Super Chewer Box will typically have a couple of edible chew of this sort and yes, dogs do like these sorts of things. Watch your dog carefully as with any chew! These are sourced and made in the US.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Doggie Biscotti

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Doggie Biscotti – Estimated Value $5

This item was not in the Barkbox Shop and this brand (Sawmill Creek Smokehouse) doesn’t have web retail as they are a private label producer for companies like Barkbox. So I am just giving it the same value as the pig ear chew since this, too, is pork. This one is also made and sourced in the USA and contains no fillers, by-products, or preservatives.

Fetchin Waves Surfboard

Fetchin Waves Surfboard – Retail Value $14

This is a chicken-flavored nylon toy and Nyx thought it was awesome. (It is now sold out from the Barkbox shop, though.) This is Nyx’s absolute favorite type of toy. She can’t eat chicken, but the chicken flavoring here isn’t strong enough to make her sick, and she gets so excited to taste something “forbidden.” This was pretty tough, too. She chewed obsessively for 10 minutes straight and barely damaged it.

Tough Tiki Pole

Tough Tiki Pole – Retail Value $14

This toy is also sold out from the Barkbox shop. You can take the sections apart and/or rearrange them (which I didn’t figure out until after I took photos, although I probably should have, seeing as the sections are different colors…). There are holes in several places on each section so you don’t have to worry about your dog’s tongue getting stuck, and it’s great for hiding a treat (or in Nyx’s case, a little of her wet food). This is a rubber that doesn’t smell and seems durable.

Healthy Dogma Tiki Treats

Healthy Dogma Tiki Treats – Retail Value $8

These treats are flavored with pork and pineapple and a base of barley, oats, and peas. So, they are not grain free, but they are free of wheat, corn, and soy, and they will work for a lot of dogs with allergies and food sensitivities. I think pineapple is a little unusual as I have mostly seen it suggested as an anti-coprophagia treatment. But, pork and pineapple is definitely a tropical combination and fits the theme. These are made in the USA.

Uptown Pup Hula Hearts Treat

Uptown Pup Hula Hearts Treat – Retail Value $8

These are also free of wheat, corn, and soy, but they do have oats, brown rice, and barley. The main protein is lamb but there is also bacon as well as pork stock. These will work for some dogs with allergies and food sensitivities, but not all. These are hard, heart-shaped dog cookies and are made in the USA.

Here are some photos of Nyx with the surfboard toy. (I took lots more, but they all kind of looked the same.) Flavored nylon toys are her absolute favorites and they don’t aggravate her IBD!

Verdict: I calculated a value of $54 for this month’s BarkBox Super Chewer Box. That is over the cost of the subscription on a month-to-month basis by quite a lot! I found there to be a pretty good mix of treats, toys, and chews. Nyx’s dietary needs are unusual so she wasn’t really able to enjoy the treats and chews, but, it is possible to personalize this subscription based on your dog’s allergies, etc., so definitely keep that in mind if your dog has allergies or food sensitivities. The toys were definitely durable (her favorite item was the nylon surfboard) and overall, everything seemed to be of good quality.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be March’s.

Coupon – Use code SUBADDICTION to get a free month added with the purchase of a 6 or 12-month subscription plan!

Value Breakdown: At $39 for the box, you’d be paying approximately the following per item:

  • Pig ear: $3.61
  • Doggie biscotti: $3.61
  • Nylon surfboard: $10.11
  • Rubber tiki pole: $10.11
  • Tiki treats: $5.78
  • Hula hearts treats: $5.78
