MunchPak Original Box March 2018 Review

Each month's MunchPak includes an insert that leads you to their Snack Scanner App, which will provide handy information on what snack you're enjoying, where it's from, and where you can purchase more!

Cadbury Curly Wurly Bars – Retail Value $2.00 (Buy a 6-pack box for $9.99 here)

I was in love this candy bar before I even took a bite of it. Cadbury has my heart forever, and the twisty, double-helix-like design of it was something I've never seen before in sweet treats. I expected to bite into a crunchy, possible pretzel filling, but was met with caramel the whole way through! So, for all you milk chocolate and caramel lovers: let this Curly Wurly bar twirl right into your regular rotation of snacks.

Smarties – Retail Value $3.00 (Buy a 4-pack for $5.50 here)

Another surprise when I bit into this! I always thought Smarties were universally the same fruity, sometimes-chewy, candy. This was more like an M&M, and so good. The chocolate center has a more muted flavor than M&M's, and each piece has an additional fruity overtone to it depending on the color coating. The orange flavor stood out to me the most.

I loved the bold colors and would surely snack on these anytime I needed a chocolate fix! (Not gonna lie, I tried these with my morning coffee. Basically a mocha, amirite?)

AL Chipino Gourmet Tortilla Chips, NY Deli Cheese – Retail Value $3.00 (Buy a 12-pack for $19.99 here)

Picture standard Doritos with a hint of their classic cool ranch flavor, add a light dusting of cheese, and you'll have these tortilla chips. They were pretty tasty, and honestly addicting.

The bag suggests a serving size of about half the bag, but I downed it all, and I wasn't even over-the-moon about the flavor! These chips have more of a Pepper Jack flavor to them than Doritos, with lighter cheese notes and a hint of heat.

Popin' Cookin' DIY Candy Waffle Kit – Retail Value $7.00 (Buy a 3-count variety pack for $16.95 here)

Ooooh boy, oh boy. I had no idea what I was getting into when I pulled this out of the box. This is no mere snack—this is a sticky, messy, sugar-coated DIY process! Let us begin to break it down:

The back of the box lays out all the instructions you'll need to make your own candy waffle.

Here's all the candy-making gear you'll have in your arsenal! Each packet contains a mysterious powder that's mixed up with water to form gel-like candy or gooey, decorative topping.

Did I wonder what each powder was made of? Absolutely. Did I avoid actually researching their chemical makeup out of fear? You betcha. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The white container included in the box should be cut up to form different measuring cups.

The small triangle measures water, the rectangular trough is where you mix your "dough," the heart-shaped grid is where the waffle-makin' magic happens, and all other indentations are used to form decorative molds.

Step one: Measure your water and combine with white powder to form your first batch of waffle dough. Stir until firm, then roll into balls.

Repeat with the other two packets of dough, and voila! Three faux-waffle balls, destined for a faux-griddle.

Squish each dough ball in your waffle mold. (This part was oddly satisfying.)

Candy waffles: made!

Other packets of powder were mixed with water and poured into molds to form gel decorations. The menu of decorative flavors included cranberry, watermelon, and blueberry.

The cranberry gel sat for about 10 minutes in the mold until it was firm enough to remove!

A mini piping bag was included! This was cute as heck. The blueberry jelly mixture was poured into this tiny bag, and then a tiny hole was cut in the corner to allow for precise piping.

This is serious stuff here, folks.

The final product! I trimmed the rough edges of my waffles to make them look more like hearts, and decorated them with watermelon "icing," blueberry jelly, and lots of sprinkles.

Fair warning: do not embark on this sophisticated culinary adventure expecting to make something delicious. These waffles had a very off-putting, jelly-like texture, and the taste was, well...about what you'd expect from three tons of sugar and lots of artificial fruit flavor.

I think if I had put them in the refrigerator to firm up, they would have been easier to eat.

Tohato Pikachu Corn Puff Snacks – Retail Value $5.00

Look at these cute lil' nuggets! Their taste reminded me a lot of Corn Pops cereal, with a sweeter outer layer and a slightly more oily feel to them. They were very light and airy, with a good crunch.

Final verdict: super adorable and dangerously fun to eat.

Bebeto Green Apple Spaghetti Candy – Retail Value $2.00

I knew I would love these. Sour gummy strings are ALWAYS a delight. The green apple flavor was perfectly tart, and not too sour, but the coarse sugar-coating left just enough tartness on your lips to make it fun to eat.

The bag is packed really full with swirly, twirly spaghetti, so beware of sugar overload!

Strawberry Banana Spring Nectar – Retail Value $5.00 (Buy a 24-pack for $32.21 here)

This was interesting! I expected to pour a carbonated beverage when I popped the can open, but the drink is more of a thick, smooth "nectar," as the name accurately suggests. It's very sweet, but it'd be great served cold over ice!

Although the flavor was said to be Strawberry Banana, I also tasted some peach in there, and maybe a hint of tangerine-y citrus, too.

Cheeza Japanese Snack Cracker – Retail Value  $5.00 (Buy a 43g bag for $3.98 here)

These cheesy crackers were great! They had a firm, crisp crunch to them. There's a very bold cheese flavor to them—(think bolder than Goldfish, but maybe less "smokey" than Cheez-Its). A solid snack.

Bamba Hazelnut Cream Peanut Butter Snacks – Retail Value $4.00 (Buy a pack of 18 for $35.64 here)

I'm not sure I would label these a "snack." That sounds dangerous because each of these rich, cream-filled pieces feel more like a dessert wafer! The puffy, flaky outer covering contrasts well against the heavy filling, and the peanut-y, hazelnut flavor is strong. I didn't have any inclination to eat more than a handful because they really are quite rich!

Goo Goo Peanut Butter Clusters – Retail Value $3.00 (Buy a box of 12 for $14.99 here)

The packaging on this delicious treat is a little misleading. I expected a bumpy, circular confection, but was greeted instead with what looked like one of those caramel-pecan turtle treats.

In any case, this was still DELIGHTFUL. It's like a giant Reese's cup! Made even better with the addition of a few crunchy peanuts! This was hands down my favorite snack of the box.

Daelman's Chocolate Caramel Stroopwafels – Retail Value $3.00 (Buy a box of 12 for $10.69 here)

Last, but certainly not least, a MunchPak favorite: Stroopwafels. The chocolate wafer may look crunchy, but this decadent sandwich treat is not snappable due to a very thick caramel filling.

I tried to break it in half for a more approachable serving, but could only bend it slightly. So, it's all or nothin' on this snack! It's very sweet and has too much caramel and not enough substantial texture for my tastes, but it's obviously well-liked if MunchPak keeps it in their snack box rotation.

Verdict: I was amazed at the amount and variety of snacks I received! Each snack was very unique, and the serving sizes were certainly nothing to scoff at. My sweet tooth was oh-so-satisfied. Maybe too satisfied, but hey, with the number of treats MunchPak sends each month, you can certainly spread out the indulgences!

Despite candy-waffle messiness and some cheesy flavors that slightly missed the mark, I would certainly deem this subscription box a success.

Here in Canada the candies you received are what we think of as Smarties. The kind of chalky candy Americans call Smarties we call Rockets.

Canadian Smarties are infinitely better than our chalky ones! Hands down!

Goo Goo clusters are my FAVORITE! I grew up in Arkansas and they were a staple in my household. I live in Massachusetts now and sadly, Goo Goo clusters are hard to come by here. I may have to go order some online now! 😊
