The Stationery Selection January 2018 Review

info sheet for the stationery selection

You'll find an info sheet (on beautiful handmade looking paper) listing out everything in this month's box.

Classiky Weekly Paper Pad Classiky Weekly Paper Pad showing thickness instructions inside Classiky Weekly Paper Pad page in Classiky Weekly Paper Pad

Classiky Weekly Paper Pad - Retail Value $8.00

OMGosh I love this pad SO MUCH. Each page is a thin newsprint-like paper and this is a pretty thick pad, so it should last a long time. At the top, there is a space to fill in the month, then down the page, you'll find the days of the week to write in the date and what all you have to do. The bottom has a spot to add appointments and a "yet list", as in things you have yet to get done.

Classiky x KATA KATA whale dish in box Classiky x KATA KATA whale dish bottom of Classiky x KATA KATA whale dish quarter in Classiky x KATA KATA whale dish

Classiky x KATA KATA Whale Dish - Retail Value $16.00

HOW CUTE IS THIS WHALE? SO cute, in my opinion. This shallow dish is a collaboration with Classiky and KATA KATA (husband and wife artist duo Chie Takai and Takeshi Matsunaga). They've made several different animals, but here we have been offered the whale, who happens to be a great desk companion. You can use this dark blue illustrated fella to hold paper clips, loose coins, or whatever small items you have floating around.

Mindwave Arctic Stickers back of Mindwave Arctic Stickers pack Mindwave Arctic Stickers

Mind Wave Arctic Animal Stickers - Retail Value $2.50

The perfect stickers for the snowy winter, this arctic animal pack comes with three stickers of each of the ten animals to bring you a total of 30 stickers. It's hard to choose a favorite among them, but I love that Puffin high-steppin' and the fact that they included a Narwhal (which I still can't believe is real) is simply wonderful. Plus: Arctic Hares!

Penco Mini Clipboard with packaging back of packaging on Penco Mini Clipboard Penco Mini Clipboard Penco Mini Clipboard with paper and pencil

Penco Clipboard - Retail Value $6.81

I'm a sucker for a clipboard. I don't know why because I rarely have a practical use for them but this one from Penco has such a cool vintage look and it's long narrow body just happens to be perfect for the weekly paper pages! This little fella would be perfect for holding to-do or grocery lists, or even an email sign up sheet for your table at the next craft fair.

Stalogy Masking Patches four sheets of Stalogy Masking Patches

Stalogy Masking Patches - Estimated Value $4.09

I couldn't find this exact size online to purchase but have a good estimate based on other sizes/color found in the link above. The idea of these little washi tape dots is to highlight dates, use for charts, or to mask out space in an art project. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, but these itty bittys come 126 to a sheet, giving us a total of 504 masking dots in dusty yellow, forest green, and rust.

Sierra Incense Cedar Pen close up of Sierra Incense Cedar Pen writing sample for Sierra Incense Cedar Pen

Sierra Incense Cedar Slip-On Pen - Retail Value $3.76

Ballpoint pens are not usually my go-to but when they have such a fine point like this one, I can get on board. This retractable pen is housed in a wood body to give it a natural pencil look and has silver metal accents. The light cedar color is unique and pleasing. I really love the way my handwriting looks when using this pen on the weekly paper sheets.

Sunny Sunday x Papier Platz Washi Tape in packaging Sunny Sunday x Papier Platz Washi Tape Sunny Sunday x Papier Platz Washi Tape, unrolled

Sunny Sunday x Papier Platz Washi Tape - Estimated Value $4.90

This was another one that was tricky to find online, but I found similar styles from the same collaboration in the link above. This washi tape collaboration is on the thicker side and features mysterious numbers and what looks like staples against a purplish/brownish hue.

Verdict: For between $44.95 and $47.95 (depending on shipping) The Stationery Selection sent me seven premium Japanese stationery goods that are definitely hard to find in my area that has a retail total of $46.07. You're not really getting much of a "deal" here, but each month delights me and this month is no exception. I love the clipboard, weekly paper pad, and whale dish the most! I can almost always count on washi tape to be included to add to my growing collection as well. This subscription is perfect for the Japanese stationery addict in your life who doesn't have access to the type of stores found in larger cities.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but sign up before the 20th to receive March as your first box.

Value Breakdown: At $47.95 for this box, you're paying about $6.85 per item.

Meems

I subscribed to this box four months ago. It is an excellent curation of authentic Japanese stationary items most of which are unique and hard to find here in the States. Each box keeps getting better and is truly a “surprise”. I am not concerned about the monetary value matching the cost of the box because the “experience” cannot be measured that way. I cannot just buy these items from Michael’s or Jet Pens with a click of the button. The Stationary Selection is a sophisticated stationary lover’s dream come true.

Very good curation! I like how the items work together. And that whale is the cutest darn thing… I may have to get one as a gift.
