My Pretend Place December 2017 Review

Our theme is Magician!

One very cool thing that My Pretend Place does is include a letter to the child. The letter is from a fictional character and helps initiate the play/pretend scenario. The letter introduces the magician-in-training to the theme and gives an idea of what fun is ahead. I like that it gives kids some practice reading, too. My 9-year-old daughter, 7-year-old son, and 6-year-old daughter all love this theme!

Melissa & Doug Magician Role Play Costume Set – Value (Retail $29.99) currently $20.97 on Amazon

This is a magician costume with accessories. It includes a magician's cape, hat, wand, and magic tricks. The costume is machine washable.

The costume set says ages 3-6, but my 9-year-old daughter can still wear it.

It comes with a booklet revealing the secrets for how to perform several magic tricks which is VERY INTERESTING to all of them.

Here is my daughter performing The Floating Wand trick.

Fair Warning: Skip ahead one photo if you do not want to know how this trick is done.

We have the classic Rabbit In The Hat trick…

There are other secrets and tricks in the booklet that I won't reveal here.

Rabbit Magic – Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $7.58)

We love getting books in subscription boxes! This is a fun book that keeps kids’ attention throughout and shares a lesson. Here is Amazon’s synopsis:

A distinctive palette and a large cast of adorable rabbits adorn a lively story told in very few words. When a magic trick goes awry, the magician M. Lapin becomes a sad rabbit while his rabbit assistant, Houdini, becomes the star of the show. After trying increasingly spectacular tricks, Houdini realizes that someone else wants and deserves the spotlight, and in his most amazing trick ever, he restores M. Lapin to his former self. Generosity and teamwork—and of course magic—take center stage in this delightful debut.

My daughter is a first grader and can read the book herself.

Sticker Sheet – Retail Value $1?

Sticker fun!

My daughter carefully thought through how she wanted to arrange her scene. I love that this subscription box allows kids to use their imaginations to learn while having fun.

The best magicians have more tricks up their sleeves.

Melissa & Doug Magic in a Snap! Hocus Pocus Collection - Retail Value $14.99 (found here for $14.19)

This set of Easy-to-Master Professional Caliber Tricks is aptly named. There are 12 pieces in this trick set including a magic coin bag, cash case, ball and vase, and a magic tube.

It comes with easy to follow instructions.

My kids learned how to perform each trick in a couple of minutes without my assistance. I think younger kids could do this as well with a little help from an adult the first time or so. Here's the trick:

They are actually pretty impressive tricks.

My Pretend Place includes a significant amount of Melissa and Doug items in their subscription boxes which is great because these are always well-designed and built to last.

Extras – Retail Value $1?

These are items that come standard with every box from My Pretend Place: a thank-you card and some stickers to decorate the box so it can be kept for storage.

We also received a magnet. I love that the box itself is reusable! My kids can easily keep their items for a theme together and grab the whole box to take on the go if they want to.

Here is the magician costume in action!

Verdict: My Pretend Place is great! They are extremely consistent in delivering a wonderful, imaginative play package for children ages 3-6+. (My oldest daughter is 9 and still loves this box.) The curation is excellent and stimulating and the contents are high quality.

The retail value here is $63.97, which is higher than the $56.00 cost of the box. Free shipping and the time it would take to hunt down these items separately and put them together into a cohesive theme which, to me, bumps up the value even more. Their website also has more themed craft and play ideas and kid-friendly recipes. And My Pretend Place offers free returns so this subscription box is essentially risk-free. (I can’t imagine they receive very many returns. This is one of my family’s favorite subscription boxes and they’ve done it again with the magician theme!)
