Birchbox Sample Box December 2017 Review

open birchbox sample box with pretty pink and navy info card

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

product list for the december 2017 birchbox

The flip side of the card contains information about each product. Now, onto the items!

peach tube of makeup

Davroe Luxe Leave-In Masque, 1.8 oz. - Estimated Value $7.25 (Buy a full-size version for $29.00)

I love leave-in treatments, especially in these winter months that make hair just get so dry and frizzy and temperamental. This hair masque smells great, and it’s definitely locked in moisture and helped me feel like my hair is stronger.

white tube of makeup

Trufora Triple Action Exfoliator, 0.5 fl oz. - Estimated Value $11.25 (Buy a full-size version for $45.00)

This exfoliator is a lovely new discovery for me! It has AHAs, BHAs, plus a bamboo extract exfoliant so you get both a physical exfoliation and a chemical one. It also has clay to help cleanse and detox. It’s made to be non-irritating, but even so, it is a thorough exfoliator. This is one I’d recommend 2-3x/week.

orange tube of makeup

Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum, 5ml - Estimated Value $14.40 (Buy a full-size version for $85.00)

The second I saw that Sunday Riley was a sample choice option I didn’t even need to look at what the other options were! I love Sunday Riley. All of her products are very highly rated, and I’ve had good experiences and results from the ones I’ve tried. This brightening serum is designed to address signs of aging, even your complexion, and boost radiance. It feels light, smells fresh and citrusy, and I feel like I can tell some good results from it after 3 days of use.

mascara open with wand standing on its lid

Marcelle Ultimate Volume Nano Mascara, 0.18 oz. - Estimated Value $10.80 (Buy a full-size version for $15.00)

I’ve had hit or miss experiences from the brand Marcelle before, and unfortunately, this mascara is a miss for me. It’s called “nano” mascara because of the small brush, which is designed to give you lots of control and get every lash. Unfortunately, I found it to perform the opposite. The lack of length in the bristles meant that no formula got in between my lashes and just wiped it on, and thickly, too. The performance was alright–no flaking or smudging throughout the day. But this brush just did no justice or favor to my lashes.

black tube of makeup

Whish Botanical Primer, 0.5 fl .oz. - Estimated Value $8.75 (Buy a full-size version for $35.00)

I’ve tried just about every primer out there, and I have to say I actually love this one! It’s a clear, creamy formula, but it left my skin feeling smooth and velvety. It definitely made a great base for applying my foundation. Although, I do have to cry the sad lamentation of subscribers everywhere when realizing that a sample is, alas, half empty. I squeezed so much before any product came out. Sigh.

eyelash curler on its side

Bonus Birchbox Eyelash Curler - Listed Value $13.00

Does anyone else remember the laughable “bonus” sample lipstick Birchbox sent out in October? I thought there was a mistake with me getting this in my box as a sixth item, but it’s included as a BONUS (see info card). This curler is fantastic!

closeup of an eyelash curler

It’s sturdy and feels nice quality and it works great. I love that the top has “BIRCHBOX” embossed in it, and it gets my lashes a fantastic curl. I never seem to realize how old my lash curlers or their lash pads are getting until I get a new one. I love that they sent this as a bonus, and I especially love that it’s a tool that I can use indefinitely and not just a sample that will run out.

The Verdict: This was a really great Birchbox month for me! Aside from the mascara, I loved everything in my box! Including the bonus lash curler, my box value adds up to $65.45, which I’m definitely happy with from a $10 discovery box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Going by the image on the sign-up page, you should still be able to get the December box if you order today. (The box design pictured is the first month you’ll receive.) You can’t pick the curated box as your first box, but you’ll be able to pick it every month moving forward.

Value Breakdown: I paid $10.00 for this box, but estimate that I received about $52.45 worth of product inside, not counting the bonus item, or $65.45 with the curler. Proportionally, that means I paid approximately the following per item:

  • Davroe mask - $1.11
  • Trufora exfoliator -  $1.72
  • Sunday Riley serum - $2.20
  • Marcelle mascara -  $1.65
  • Whish primer - $1.34
  • Eyelash curler - $1.99

Okay, so I have a subscription for Ipsy and for Birchbox.. I’ve had my ipsy subscription for about 6 months now.. I kept hearing all this good stuff about birchbox so I figured I would try it out. I’ve had it for 2 months now. The birchbox app is always having difficulties and when i look at my orders, January box isn’t there even tho the money was taken out of my account and I received an email about it. The ipsy app is always helpful, plus very organized and on the 5th of every months shows me my items and tells me when it has shipped. Last month with birchbox I did love the eyelash curler and the Marcelle mascara, so far best mascara I’ve ever used. Right now ipsy has me at 5 stars and birchbox 3 stars. If the app worked half the time maybe it would be a little better. I do like the fact that I can choose a sample or have it be a surprise, but so far my items havent been worth it. I am not a fan of always getting shampoo and conditioner. 😣😣

I subscribed to Birchbox and Boxycharm for two years. I did not renew my yearly Birchbox subscription for 2018. I’m just not impressed with Birchbox anymore. The best things I have to say about Birchbox are they have introduced me to products that I consider my “holy grail”; along with all of the reward points that accumulate when purchasing from their shop. They really do reward you for purchasing from their shop, but the shipping is very slow. In my humble opinion, Birchbox doesn’t begin to compete with Boxycharm. I much prefer getting full size products instead of only samples. There’s just not a better value than Boxycharm. If I were Birchbox, I’d up my game and offer what Boxycharm offers. They would have a lot more subscribers, more positive reviews, and repeat subscribers. Boxycharm is unparalleled compared to the competition. Month after month, they never disappoint me !

I got my first box this month and am so disappointed. I got a shampoo/conditioner sample, the same mascara sample as above the brush is too small, a tiny face cream and a smashbox highlighter. The only product I’ll use is the face cream and the highlighter. I really wish I wouldve got ipsy instead.

My bonus box was the shampoo and foil packets that were in my December box, along with acne products that might have been helpful 30 years ago lol. And no Sunday Riley 🙁
This is my first experience with Birchbox and sadly, not a promising beginning.

Same here… I don’t like it

I didn’t care for anything shown in the box curated for me, so I chose a Davines shampoo. This precise size sells for $11 on the company’s website. With that I received foil packs of the coordinating hair serum and conditioner. I also received the Marcelle mascara. I won’t be keeping that only because I have more than a year’s worth of mascara right now. I’m closing in on two years’ worth. Adding in a Kiel’s sample that will last at least a month, LOC shimmer shadow, Sand & Sky clay mask, and the eyelash curler.

So… I received 5 items, 2 sample packs, and an eyelash curler. I was super happy about that. I really like the eyelash curler. Not only did I need a replacement, but I like the way this one feels in my fingers. The metal cross piece that has BIRCHBOX engraved on it is a little tall for me, but I’m figuring out how to get at my lash roots. Even when I haven’t reached the very bottom this curler does a fantastic job of curling my lashes.

Gold star for Birchbox.

I don’t think they ship to Canada.

Birchbox is confusing me… I gifted myself a 6-month subscription with their 25% off deal in late November. Their “favorites” box shipped shortly afterward still in late November, and I received it in early December. I was able to choose the Sunday Riley for my December sample choice, but my account shows January as my next box (while showing the favorites box samples as the last samples I received). Looks like I’ll have to contact CS. Ugh.

I got the box that was curated and loved it a lot. The wand on the Marcelle mascara tho is funky looking so it’s a no for me . But I love Birchbox. And this is the first curated box I’ve received bc usually I do the samples selection

I ordered with the bonus box coupon on December 3rd, and was pretty excited as I hadn’t tried Birchbox before. What a letdown! My 2nd box was pretty much a double of my main box, except it had some doubles in it. And neither had in it what the cards said. My daughters boxes were not like this, but even they didn’t follow with her profile. On their site they want you to review the products that they say were in your box, I can’t review products that they didn’t send. This will be cancelled and will wait for BoxyCharm to have an opening.

JSo

Mine too!! 3 of the same items. Plus the two foil packets in each. I did the double box to be able to try a wide range of items. And the samples I did get seem almost empty. I get play and the samples are always very generous. This is almost a tease. So glad I didn’t spend much. Cancelling birchbox for sure

I am ready to give up too, samples too small and foil packets. Allure is much better

I got the mascara and the primer as part of the curated box, and agree with your assessments of both. The brush for the mascara is awful. I generally like the shorter bristle brushes, but these were too short, and not enough of them. I may try using the mascara with a brush from one of my other mascaras, and see how that works, so I can get an accurate assessment of the actual mascara.

I did like the primer, although if they are going to send a .5 sample, they shouldn’t put it in a 1.0 tube. It’s kind of deceiving, and makes it more of a pain to use. Other than that, it did work very well.

Mally

I agree on the primer tube size! I thought it was almost empty because it took a lot of squeeze to get anything out of it! lol .5 oz is barely enough to use more than 1 or 2 times, if that. It sure is a “sample”. May as well been a foil.

This box was actually not bad. I got a MAC mascara and dry shampoo, otherwise it was the same. Pretty good for Birchbox. TBH, Birchbox is probably going to be given up next month. It’s just not something I get excited to receive.

I chose the Sunday Riley too. Didn’t get it. My box was completely different and very disappointing. The only thing that was the same was the eyelash curler.
