Lavanila The Healthy Fragrance Vanilla Coconut Eau de Parfum - .04 fl oz, Estimated Value $1.13

Lavanila generally makes very sweet, gourmand perfumes and this is no exception! Vanilla and coconut is pretty straightforward. I definitely like this fragrance!

OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil - .28 fl oz, Estimated Value $2.99

This hair & body oil can be used pretty much everywhere from head to toes. It’s very soft and hydrating on my skin, and it left my hair frizz-free and smooth.

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream - .24 fl oz, Estimated Value $13.65

This is a great eye cream! It’s a new discovery for me, but it has some great natural ingredients like hyaluronic acid, cucumber, chamomile, witch hazel, and aloe vera. It’s hydrating, refreshing, and wasn’t oily or anything that interfered with under eye makeup. I always use an eye cream and this is one I know I’ll use all of.

Avène Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum - .1 fl oz, Estimated Value $3.76

The only product I’ve tried from Avene before is their thermal spring water. This serum is basically designed to be their thermal spring water, in serum form. It feels very refreshing upon application, but the hydration wasn’t as intense as I need for my dry skin.

The Beauty Crop Glow Milk Liquid Highlighter - .14 fl oz, Estimated Value $9.75

This brand is cruelty-free and vegan! At first I thought this was a mini nail polish but it’s actually a highlighter! It has some serious pigmentation to it!

Birchbox Sample Choice Review October 2017

This honestly reminds me some of the Cover FX Enhancer drops I just got in my October Sephora Play! box. You can use this kind of liquid formula to get an intense strobe effect or use it lightly and blend for a subtler look.

Here’s the highlighter drops swatched for you – great intensity!

Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Envious foil sample

I’m glad this is a “bonus” extra because it’s just a foil sample of lipstick. Honestly, it’s like a smear of lipstick on a card for me. I could use a brush to get it on but the presentation is just meh for me and doesn’t get me excited about trying the sample.

Birchbox Sample Choice Review October 2017

The color is called “Envious” which is a pretty red shade.

Verdict: This was a pretty good Birchbox for me! I found a couple new products I really like (namely the eye cream and the highlighter drops) and the value adds up to $31.28, which I’m definitely happy with for a $10 discovery box. Normally I’m excited about a bonus sample but I think the presentation/size of the Estee Lauder lipstick was disappointing and I think it’ll be almost a throwaway sample for a lot of subscribers.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, as of today your first box will be the November box. (Tip: Check the image on the sign-up page. The box design pictured is the first month you’ll receive.) You can’t pick the curated box as your first box, but you’ll be able to pick it every month moving forward.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Lavanila The Healthy Fragrance Vanilla Coconut Eau de Parfum: $0.36
  • OUAI Rose Hair & Body Oil: $0.96
  • Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream: $4.36
  • Avène Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum: $1.20
  • The Beauty Crop Glow Milk Liquid Highlighter: $3.12

I recently subscribed to Birchbox; November will be my first month. Can someone please explain the curated box vs choosing an item? I wasn’t given options of any kind when I signed up, so I thought I would simply receive random items with perhaps one or two guaranteed items like other subs do.

Additionally, I don’t see any spoilers. Are there no spoilers for Birchbox? Thanks!

This was the first box I received, I was a little disappointed, I thought it was going to be a lot different. Hopefully the next month willbe better.

I love that highlighter! So pigmented.

It was pretty deceiving the way they incorporated that lipstick bonus sample. When I was able to peek inside my October box it was the first thing listed. It showed a full lipstick tube (I know they always show the full size image, but even so…) and didn’t say bonus sample anywhere. I received a perfume sample as well, which is why I assumed the lipstick was one of my 5 products. Perfume samples are nearly always the bonus sample in a box with 6 items. Playing dirty Birchbox, shame shame.

Birchbox definitely isn’t as exciting as it was a few years ago but this seems to be a pretty solid box. I have really enjoyed every Beauty Crop product that I have received from Birchbox and would have liked to to try this one out. I’m indifferent about the lipstick sample, it could be better but I certainly wouldn’t be upset about a bonus sample. It’s too bad Birchbox stopped sending out great bonus samples- Like the Pura Vida elastic and mini Chuao chocolate bars they did in the past.

Omg I miss those Chuao bars!!

It being Halloween, I’m going to use this lipstick ‘sample’ to do my son’s eye makeup as Dracula (tryna get those good spooky sunken in eyes). That way I don’t have to mess with a lipstick I actually like, and it should be just the perfect amount.

That frickin lipstick was an Ipsy point perk x’s 3. I was furious and emailed Ipsy right away. They sent back an “Oh well” email to me.

Nice review Haley! I couldn’t agree more about that lipstick “sample”. WHat the heck?!?

Randl, I almost feel like had they omitted that lipstick “sample,” subscribers might even have a better overall opinion of the box. Like, maybe they shouldn’t have even sent it out?

This was my first box. I didn’t get the liquid highlighter, so the lipstick smudge was one of my actual items. I cancelled immediately and they were just like “Oh well.. have a nice life.” I used to give 3 month subs to my nieces to Birchbox.. after trying it for myself and having this experience? Never again. I am going to see if which other beauty boxes offer short term beauty gift subs.

amber

Kinda silly they even listed it on the info card, if it’s just a smear. Not even really a sample
