Unqualified by Anna Faris – Retail Value $28

Book Summary from Amazon:

Anna Faris has advice for you. And it’s great advice, because she’s been through it all, and she wants to tell you what she’s learned.

After surviving an awkward childhood (when she bribed the fastest boy in the third grade with ice cream), navigating dating and marriage in Hollywood, and building a podcast around romantic advice, Anna has plenty of lessons to share: Advocate for yourself. Know that there are wonderful people out there and that a great relationship is possible. And, finally, don’t date magicians.

Her comic memoir, Unqualified, shares Anna’s candid, sympathetic, and entertaining stories of love lost and won. Part memoir—including stories about being “the short girl” in elementary school, finding and keeping female friends, and dealing with the pressures of the entertainment industry and parenthood—part humorous, unflinching advice from her hit podcast, Anna Faris Is Unqualified, the book will reveal Anna’s unique take on how to master the bizarre, chaotic, and ultimately rewarding world of love.

Hilarious, honest, and useful, Unqualified is the book Anna’s fans have been waiting for.

I’m a few chapters into this book, and so far I’ve found her writing to be very conversational and easy to read. She discusses an unfortunate college breakup at the very beginning, which made me think, OK, I’m hoping this trend of not holding back on embarrassing material continues.

And of course, I’m curious to see how much she gets into the break up with Chris Pratt. (He wrote the forward of this book and mentions how much things had changed from when he first agreed to write it and when he actually wrote it.)

Tarte Tarteist PRO Glow to Go Highlight & Contour Palette – Value $23

YES! I am ALWAYS thrilled to see tarte in a subscription box!

This palette includes two shimmery highlighters and a matte bronzer/contour shade.

How gorgeous is this little palette? I like the gold metal detail inside, too:

The formulas are heavily pigmented and go on so silky. Plus – this palette smells like chocolate! Here are all the shades swatched:

Hester & Cook Chalkboard Paper Placemat Pad & Set of 4 Chalk Style Pencils – Value $25

This set includes 16 placement pages (this is one time use paper), and a set of “chalk” pencils to write with:

(FYI – you will need a pencil sharpener for these.)

You could decorate them however you like, and we decided to use them as a different way to do name cards! (I think it would be so fun to have kids help with Thanksgiving dinner by decorating these, too!)

And you could also save one to display a Thanksgiving menu!

(And this box also includes a coupon for 15% off at Hester & Cook.)

Jen Atkin X Chloe + Isabel Split Headband – Value $22

This rose gold headband arrives in such fancy packaging – definitely worthy of gifting if it isn’t for you!

I’m not normally a headband wearer, but I like the simplicity of this one – and the rose gold metal makes it extra classy!

And Christen and Jess are modeling it for us!

Knot & Bow Holiday Mint Newsprint Gift Wrap – Value $6

This set includes 3 sheets of wrapping paper.

The sheets measure 22¾” x 30″ each, and they were designed exclusively for POPSUGAR! (They’re made with recycled paper, too.)

I love how this print is festive without being overly holiday – it will work all year round!

So cute!

Fatty Sundays Chocolate Covered Pretzels in Peppermint – Value $3.49

And POPSUGAR continues their streak of sending treats my husband Eric absolutely loves. (I’d be all over these myself if I wasn’t avoiding gluten.)

I also appreciate that these are packaged up nicely – I think they’d make a nice stocking stuffer, too. (Can you tell I’m in holiday mode?)

Chocolate covered pretzels dipped in candy cane pieces? I am pure envy right now!

This box also included a coupon for 20% off from Fatty Sundays:

And a bonus coupon for $25 off of BloomThat:

(FYI with this coupon + shipping, the lowest price we found for a bouquet was $23.99)

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $107.49. That’s good, but feels light coming after the amazing October box! I think I would have been more wowed if there had been one high-value hero item. That said, the tarte palette is such a win! Everything else is super useful, and this ties into Thanksgiving/holidays/hosting in ways I wasn’t expecting – very smart to include items that will be useful long after the holidays!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? As of today, 11/3, yes! When you click “Subscribe Now” on the POPSUGAR site, the box your subscription will start with will be highlighted.

Coupon – Use coupon code MUSTHAVE5 to save $5

Value Breakdown: At $39.95 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Unqualified: $10.41
  • Tarte palette: $8.55
  • Placemat Set: $9.29
  • Headband: $8.18
  • Gift Wrap: $2.23
  • Fatty Sundays: $1.30

  1. Dear Popsugar,

    [Plagiarism, kind of, follows]

Since you adamantly keep sending us books, my subscription with you will certainly go gentle into that good night. Adieu, adieu. Parting is such sweet sorrow. 🧐

    • Dear Popsugar,

She doesn’t speak for everyone. Some like getting the occasional book.

Thank you for such amazing boxes for $40 (or less). The products you are able to include are amazing)! Some are never happy with anything – even though going in you know this is a mystery box.

      • Thank you!

      • Sorry, perhaps I should have said “…sending *me* books…” as I didn’t intent to express everyone’s preference. My comment was only meant as a tongue-in-cheek statement of my disappointment with PSMH lately.

I’ve been a PSMH subscriber for a long time and although lots of people thoroughly enjoy their boxes, I’ve noticed they are lackluster to me lately. PSMH boxes were something I eagerly looked forward to every month but recent months’ boxes have been humdrum to me–I’ve only liked one or two items (at best) from each box. As for books, the ones from PSMH go unused in my house because my reading preferences are hardly met by them (or any other sub to my knowledge). Thus, I prefer to select my own reading at the bookstore or library.

Therefore, I’ve come to the realization it’s time for me to part ways with PSMH, as much as it pains me since I really enjoyed their earlier offerings.

      • mtvb, nowhere in her comment did mtvb say everyone hates books. She gave her opinion which is what the forum is for. And, I think she did it very creative.

      • I posted this but I don’t think it went through. Mtvb your post was just fine. It didn’t say everyone hates books, it said your opinion about your likes. And, as an added note, I thought you said it very creatively.

      • I know how you feel – I was once there a couple of years ago. It was great while it lasted, though. Now I only purchase the LE boxes that interest me. I am much happier now 🙂

      • I thought your comment was funny!!!! I am not thrilled with this book as I don’t support Miss Faris due to her past of animal neglect. I read the last two books and I enjoyed the Evelyn Hugo book very much – Popsugar needs to get with the times and offer digital versions- I cringe at the thought of receiving this book and I would be happy to give it away if someone sends me postage ! We don’t all have to be thrilled with all the spoilers – come on -compared with last months awesome box this one is LACKING!! The tarte , pretzels and headband are all I’ll use – and as a paying subbie, it is ok to express your dissatisfaction!!

      • I would love the book for shipping if you haven’t had any takers! (assuming postage is reasonable) I didn’t subscribe this month b/c I only wanted the book and pretzels but don’t feel like they are worth the 40 bucks lol
        How do we exchange info?

      • I agree. I have thought the quality has gone downhill for months now, I’m not sure why I even still subscribe……

      • Agreed. I always love it when they send books.

It’s a lifestyle box with a variety of items… some will be misses for some people. That’s the nature of the beast. I don’t get the “down with books in sub boxes!” mentality of so many people… I don’t wear bracelets, but I don’t get mad when they send them.

    • Agreed about the books. I am a serious book lover but the selections have been 99% basic (which makes sense for the every-woman they are trying to appease.) They are still always a miss for me though.

    • Yeah, I hate getting the books, too. They are pretty much ‘unswappable’ I’ve noticed, so I just donate or give to a friend that might be interested.

  2. I like that I can use the wrap to gift all this stuff to my sister haha

    • Hahahaha so funny

    • Haha!!!
      Good idea!

  3. No FOMO – this would have been a bust for me! I used to covet PSMH but now it seems I always prefer FFF.

  4. I’ve been following reviews of this box for over a year and only been temped to sub a couple times. I don’t get the hype. To each their own. I do love FFF reviews and the November box is looking awesome I just subscribed 😍

  5. Not every box can be good; we’ve had a good run! I hate getting books in boxes, personally. I love to read, but not the trash they put in their boxes. This box is a fail for me, but I can gift a lot of it, so that’s a plus!

  6. After 2 years with Popsugar, I cancelled last month. Unfortunately I still have 4 more boxes I’ll receive! It really seems like they are just sending out random junk now. Honestly, would anyone actually seek out this stuff? I tired of dragging most of it to our local thrift store. The boxes used to be so fun and actually worth the money.

  7. I showed the photos of the palette to my daughter:

    “That’s so white.”

    ” For very white people”

    “Super white people” .

“Which would be you,” I interjected.

    “Yeah” she admits.

    • Haha??? No.

    • lol sounds like something my mom/sister would say to me!

    • I’m sorry I really have to ask here, what does this comment mean? It comes off very modern fem ‘everything is for white people’. I have to say it doesn’t even make sense because those highlights from the Tarte palette look AMAZING on dark skin! It definitely isn’t just something for white people. I don’t think it’s cute to look at everything through that lens, although I’m very sure you or your daughter weren’t intending to be mean.

      • my Jamaican friend taught me how to contour!! Bronzer and highlight is for all of our gorgeous tones. Highlighter on my friends dark skin looks insanely pretty !! I have a bh cosmetics strobe palette and she tried on this cool greenish highlight and omg ! Super pretty!
Very light skin doesn’t require bronzer , very dark skin can use it – or vice versa- there’s no rules!!!

      • It’s usually self hating white people. Very sad for her daughter she had to learn something like that.

  8. I just want the book so I hope it goes up for swap.

    • Once I figure out how to add to the swap board it’s all yours.

    • Girl, I would give you the book if you’d just pay the shipping. I am not interested one iota in it.

      • That would be awesome, thank you so much. Let me know and I can pay for shipping through PayPal or something.

    • I am sure it will. lol

A first for me – nothing at all in this box that I want to keep.

  9. I truly hope the Tarte contour palette does not glisten. I do not like to glitter while I’m contoured. I already have a nice mostly matte contour palette from Too Faced. However, I do love Tarte as a brand.

I’m going to have my little niece and nephew design our Christmas placemats with the charcoal paper. I think they will have a blast with that.

As a borderline “old” who entered the workforce in the 90s, I am STILL a little traumatized by the ever-present “Seinfeld” Elaine headband look from back then. But this one looks pretty, and I won’t be rocking the old pompadour pouf.

    • Kathleen, I have several similar tarte kits. The contour shades have always been matte. The highlighters are shimmer with finely milled particles rather than chunky glitter.
That headband 😳. How am I going to fit my head into that 2″ gap?!

      • Thanks, Jacki. I’ll hold this palette in reserve then for when the Too Faced one runs out…and I like to use the sparkly highlighters as eye shadow instead usually. The headband…we’ll see if it works on my tiny pinhead.

The pretzels were delicious! I ate them as a hangover breakfast today…shame, shame. 🙂

  10. I wish cosmetic companies would stop putting all warm tones in contour palettes. An ashy color is needed to replicate facial shadows- since when are shadows warm or bronze? Anastasia’s cream contour in fair does have some ashy colors, but I’ve yet to find a non bronzey powder kit. Any suggestions?

Anyhoo, I do love tarte and the headband is pretty. A one-use chalkboard placemat? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a chalkboard- to erase and reuse? So….it’s essentially black construction paper at $25. And books are a very personal preference, especially biographical ones. That’s a lot of time to spend in the life of a person you may not know or care to know. I’ll give it a go tho, perhaps as a good bathroom selection if nothing else. 😉

  11. This is probably one of the worst popsugar boxes I have ever seen. My sub ended in august and I’m not sad about it. I though I would probably end up resubbing this month because the whole reason I started subscribing in the first place was the fantastic November box last year. Well, guess I’m going to save some money.

    • Meow, you and I are on the same wavelength. November 2016 rocked! My hubby who is so sweet about my sub addiction actually said, what happened this month???

  12. I’m actually really glad I let my sub expire last month. The only way I will resub is if they offer an incredibly good Black Friday offer. I would have been very disappointed to get this box.

  13. This is a creative and fun box, but there is nothing in it I can use except the gift card. That’s okay; October was amazing enough for two months.

  14. Well, I really thought the book (which I did not like) was just a teaser to a great box. Last November’s box was so awesome. This box is probably the worst one I will receive since starting with PSMH in 2016. And I really try to find the good in everything.

  15. I never thought I would say this..but Popsugar just isn’t doing it for me anymore. Especially at full price. With so many other boxes stepping up their game I just find myself not super excited about PS🙁
Off topic..does FFB typically have Black Friday deals for annual subscriptions? I don’t want to upgrade now if they do.

  16. I’m going to start by saying I just got back from getting a tooth filled so I’m a little cranky but UGH. With the exception of the Tarte palette, this is a terrible box for me. Zero interest in the book, the ‘placemats’ are basically a pad of black construction paper, I haven’t actually wrapped a gift in years (gift bags all day, every day, please) and while it’s very pretty, metal headbands are notoriously uncomfortable. I wonder if it’s possible to repurpose that as a choker…hmmmm. Oh well. I feel like PS December boxes are always one of the best of the year so here’s hoping.

  17. The headband is very pretty but makes my head hurt just looking at it – blasted big head! The placemats are super fun and I always appreciate gift wrap but that’s not enough to spring for the box. Hopefully I can swap for them or wait for a boutique sale.

    • I have a tiny pea-head, and I got a headache just thinking about that headband.

  18. snooze. i really wanted more from this. the paper products don’t do much for me–i have a ton of wrapping paper, and i wish the placemats could be reusable—something like in the Neiman Marcus PS box would have been amazing! for once i’d love something bold and glam, instead of your average highlight/contour palette. give me some color! the headband looks a little dangerous for my unruly hair (having flashbacks of using a metal headband as a child, and literally having to rip it out of my hair). yawn. at least there are the pretzel sticks…

  19. If the Black Friday deal isn’t really good for popsugar I will only buy boxes on sale after full spoilers going forward.

    • Seconded! I’ve already listed the pallette and the headband; the rest will likely be gifted.

  20. I don’t love my second popsugar box but I’m sure I’ll be able to gift some items to my daughter and nieces. Newby to subscription boxes and I just know it will get better!
Thanks for all of the info. you put out Liz I do love dreaming about what I could get.

  21. Well, I will be regifting all of this box, so it has some value. But I am disappointed. Did anyone else but me think that maybe we would get a tablecloth, from looking at the “hint” photo they had initially posted? PS I agree with some of the prior posts, the celeb bio books do nothing for me. Good fiction, self-improvement, and DIY (such as cookbooks) are welcome here though.

  22. I don’t understand how the chalkboard is a one time use item. The whole cool thing about chalkboards is the you can erase and reuse. Otherwise, just use a marker and piece of paper.

This box is a miss for me.

    • It isn’t a chalkboard, it is a pad of 16 sheets of chalkboard paper.

  23. Is it just me? I feel like I’ve been receiving a highlighter of some sort in almost every box of PSMH lately? How many highlighters does a girl need, or when does it stop? Lol. With that said I am a fan of Tarte, so at least there’s that positive to this one. 🙂

    • I don’t use highlighters and i have like 4 from boxes. They need to stooop!

  24. This is a total miss for me. The book was the deal breaker and I do not use metal headbands.

But I am excited to see what December’s Must Have will feature. It seems like those are always great!

  25. Anyone putting the tarte pallet up for swap?

    • Me 🙂

    • Me!

  26. I will definitely buy this box if it goes on sale! I guess I’m in the minority, I love everything :p

  27. The headband is by far my favorite item.

Am I the only one who has no idea how to use a contour palette? We get highlighters and contour stuff all the time and I have no idea what to do with it.

Could you do a contouring ‘how-to’ post?

    • There’s a million contouring tutorials out there, all across YouTube and other sites. That’s not really in MSAs realm and some people already complain about too many non-subscription related posts

    • I’m right there with you! I really want to highlight and contour (I think lol) but idk how the heck you do it!

    • Yeah, I have no clue either

    • I would love to see a demo post here, as well! But in the meantime, check out Wayne Goss’s YouTube channel–he has great demos, including how NOT to contour…LOL. He seems like a sweetheart and is quite funny. Learned a lot about applying eye makeup from him, and techniques for making foundation last.

    • I also need that how-too 😊

  28. What a let down and waste of $40 🙁

  29. Why not make your Winter boxes more for winter I would have liked A good lip scrub my lips get terrible in the winter or a big jar of very light scented body cream or body oil or a nice face serum Something for winter months when my skin and hair is so dry. Indiana weather is not pleasant on your skin and hair in the winter

  30. WOW. I hope someone at PS reads these reviews. Where I don’t think books are all bad, they are not an appropriate hero item. They are not relevant to a pretty wide range of people. Without another really amazing item the box is a bust. Book set aside the value on the box is low. with the book launch mid break up… This feels like it was a sponsered item to unload books, not an item that was curated.

I wish there was more of a clear target audience for this box. Its like I loved october so much I bought extras as gifts, and this one… well I just paid $40 for some chocolate covered pretzals.

  31. Not an exciting box, but I’m glad the makeup is made in the USA

  32. This is my first box. I am really digging the book, the headband, and the tart palette. Wrapping paper will be used but still a bit weird to me to have it in there. Luckily I have a very quite thanksgiving this year so I don’t really need place mats but depending on the thickness of paper it might be fun to use them to wrap small gifts and be able to decorate my own wrapping paper.

    • You could also use them to make wall art with. We are talking about using them to right recipes on and decorate then frame and hang them in our kitchen/dining room. Look on Google to find some ideas.

  33. Pretty disappointed in this for my first month back with popsugar. I wish they would avoid these “celebrity” books about life and advice. Actually I wish they would just avoid books all together. Pretty sad when the only useful items for me are wrapping paper and pretzel sticks. The contour set is more like all highlighter on dark skinned me. Lol.
Anyhow, I’ll find a way to possibly gift the items I don’t want which unfortunately is most of the box.

    • Yep, everything she said.

  34. I’m excited for this box. I’m really excited for the placemats. i make/sell jewelry and I think they will be fun to take photos on because i can wrote little notes about the piece.

    • That is an awesome idea!

  35. I’d love to swap for the chalk pencils if anyone is interested! Please let me know!

  36. I forced myself to cancel last week to save money, and I’m not at all sad to be missing out on this box. Whew!

    • Exactly the same with me! I’d much rather have the $40 than this stuff. If they don’t have a half off discount for Black Friday I’ll just be watching this box.

  37. Great, fun box! I have ben wanting the Tarte palette! Yay!

  38. I guess I’m the lone weirdo! I like the box! Lol my nieces are 5.5 and 4 and will absolutely love the placemats with chalk pencils. Didn’t know this was a thing—will be purchasing more at full price. Don’t use bronzers, but the brand is great so I’m more than comfortable gifting it. Love me some rose gold ANYTHING! I will try the headband out. I can always use gift wrap. And, although I wouldn’t think to buy the book on my own, it will make a great rainy Saturday read. It’s a very low cost box of surprises—I think popsugar does a great job overall. Plus, there’s always the swapsite if something just doesn’t work for someone.

    • I agree! I love love this box!!!

    • This is actually a super rare box for me – I love every item! Nothing huge/hero, but I’ll enjoy using each of these fun items!

  39. I’d love to swap for the headband!

  40. I’d love to swap for the Tarte and book if anyone is interested!

  41. Wow, this is a terrible box for me. Especially coming off the incredible October box. I should have canceled. Pretty sad when the only thing I’m excited about or will even use is the headband. A $40 headband… I’ll stick around for December just in case, but if that’s anything like this box I’m definitely canceling.

  42. <3 that headband! If anyone wants to swap theirs, please hit me up!

  43. Love advice from someone going through divorce?! No, thanks!

    • I respect people who get divorces more than those who stay in a relationship that is awful. At least they have the guts to end it, instead of being unhappy and forcing something.

  44. Kinda sad I forgot to cancel before payment went through. I don’t really care for anything in this box. I am a very lazy makeup person, so contouring and highlighting isn’t my jam. I’m sure I know someone to gift it to though

  45. I am happy about the tarte to go contour palette, since I am running low on bronzer, and I like tarte products. It also looks matte, which is perfect for me. The headband is also quite cute, and since I don’t own any headbands, this will be a cute addition- hopefully it doesnt pinch or give me a headache. The placemats will be regifted during christmas time since they’re cute but not useful to me. Those pretzles look yummy and I am not planning on sharing them! and the wrapping paper will be used this holiday season. I am still bummed about the book- I am not an Anna Faris fan due to her past history of animal mistreatment- i dont like to support people who do things that I very strongly disagree with morally. I also wish PSMH would find a way to give readers the option of a digital copy- I do not collect books – I have everything on my kindle- so I will likely read it and then recycle it. it definitely more green to consider this option – and also cheaper shipping! all in all, this seems like a well curated box, however I am not jumping for joy for anything in particular, and If i had the option, i would have skipped this box.

    • Why not leave the book at a Little Free Library or drop it off at Goodwill? No shipping, and someone else will be able to enjoy it 🙂

      • I didn’t even think of goodwill – maybe I will do that!

  46. A complete miss for me.

    • Ditto

  47. Personally speaking, this box is very disappointing. Well, I do enjoy Anna Faris’s work, this isn’t my type of book (I love fiction and would be more open to a random book from that genre). As a person of color, the highlight and chisel palette is a miss for me. It won’t show up on my skin as much as I wish my baby cheeks could be more defined (a girl can dream!). The other stuff I “can” use if I think about it, but not stuff I would go out of my way to get (but would be a nice donation to GoodWill). But this review did make me log into my account and cancel my subscription before I am charged the full rate next month.

    • Or my friends and I make xmas gifts for woman at domestic violence shelters. I use a lot of these new, nice items to makes the gifts.

      • Thanks, Laura 🙂 I usually do take books and personal hygiene items at the women shelter once a month (I read a lot). But some reason I don’t know why my mind went to Goodwill especially for makeup! 😀 (I don’t even think they accept makeup!!)

      • Awesome!

    • Thanks for the reminder to cancel! I forgot this was my last box on my sub. And what a dud end to the year.

    • Did you consider using the contour palette as eyeshadow highlighters? They work great for that on darker skin tones!

      • That might work but I think I might donate this palette still and wait for something next year to try it. (Thank you for the idea though!) I figured it would be nicer to give it to someone who would get more use that leave it to collect in my cabinets. I come from a long line dirt poor immigrant family (not dirt poor anymore but still well off to get myself an occasional subscription) and I knew what it was like to get nothing on Christmas and be hungry. If I could make someone else happy that would be better (and very happy that Laura pointed out women shelter as it completely slipped my mind)

@Emily – hehehehe 🤣 i logged only to find I still have 2 more months! 😅 (Hopefully there would be a good black friday present so I can get the Feb box which is seems like the best one each year — love lipstick. I am total glutton for lipstick)

  48. Is the headband one of those stiff ones that give you a headache or is it flexible?

    • It’s flexible for metal. (I’ve been wearing it the whole time I wrote the review and forgot I had it on.) Hope that helps!

      • Thanks! That’s great.

  49. This would have been a complete bust for me…..

  50. Wow not one thing I like in the box.
