Whiskerbox October 2017

There was an information card in the box listing the items. It also had my cats’ names – even Angus!

Whiskerbox October 2017

Black Cat Catnip Toy from Crochet Kitty – Value $8

This is a handmade stuffed catnip toy that has a feather boa for a tail so Angus is all over it. I tried to take a picture of this one with Madison but it didn’t show up against his fur. Anyway, this is on the larger side for a cat toy but it seems well made and Angus totally plays with big toys.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Weruva Outback Grill Trevally and Barramundi (3 oz) – Estimated Value $1.29 (buy a case of 24 for $30.99)

You’ll usually get a can or pouch of a Weruva product with this subscription. My kitties now know the sound of a plate coming out of the cabinet to eat wet food so I always use this food as a lure to get them to where I can take photos. This food is a little odd – big chunks of fish in a gelatinous goop – but Sneaky and Monkey (and Angus, a little bit) licked up all the goop and then Sneaky ate the fish chunks. (Poor Mr. Kitty was only able to lick the plate after Sneaky had cleaned it. He can’t eat fish, but I figured the residue would be OK.) Not the most successful food experiment of all time, but not bad.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Butter Popcorn Hat from Cat Couture – Listed Value $35

There is always one item of cat apparel in this subscription. Sometimes it is a collar and bowtie combo, sometimes it is a full-body costume, and sometimes it is a hat. This one is made from acrylic yarn and definitely has the look of being handmade. It is an odd hat – who goes around with a tub of popcorn on their head? – but I got a kick out of putting it on some of my cats, nonetheless.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Sneaky Mouse Toy and Catnip Tube from CatIQ – Listed Value $10

I couldn’t find this online so I used the value from the information card. It’s not unreasonable for a handmade toy. This appears to be high quality – the stitching is nice and tight, the Velcro closure for the refillable interior works well, and the tail and ears are well-attached. It is super soft and Angus likes it a lot. Plus there is a lot of catnip left after I filled it once, so I can always refill it when it loses its charm.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Only 1 Ingredient Duck & Sweet Potato (56g) – Listed Value $9

This makes me laugh every time because duck and sweet potato together are not “only one ingredient.”  However, Mr. Kitty can eat these. In fact, he is the only cat who seems to want them, but that’s OK. He can definitely have duck! These are a bit difficult for him to eat with his bad teeth but he was up to the challenge and he was SO HAPPY that I actually let him have one. You can only buy these in Canada (where they are made) so I’ve taken the value from the information card.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Jelly Belly Kids Mix – Buy a 3.5 ounce bag for $2.49

There’s always a small candy in this box; this month we got jellybeans. I don’t include this in the overall value because it is small by comparison to everything else, it’s really just a fun extra.

Whiskerbox October 2017

This food was kind of weird, like big chunks of fish in gelatinous goo, but Sneaky and Monkey finished it off. Angus got in on the action, too, whereas this time, Madison lurked in the background.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Angus checks out the toys. I didn’t get photos of him playing with them, but Whiskerbox toys are some of his favorites in the weeks after the box arrives.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Angus sniffs one of the treats.

Madison seems to think he was supposed to rub his face on the treat.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Madison models the popcorn hat.

Whiskerbox October 2017

This picture makes me laugh and laugh and laugh every time I see it. Monkey wears a hat like no one else.

Whiskerbox October 2017

Sneaky bites something!

Whiskerbox October 2017

Mr. Kitty does not seem to enjoy this much.

Whiskerbox October 2017

But the look of joy on his face here is unmistakable!

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $66 for the October 2017 Whiskerbox. I had to take most of the values from the information card but, on the other hand, there were a lot of items from small producers (like the toys) or from other countries that are hard to get in the US (like the treats) or that are exclusive to the box (like the popcorn hat), so I still feel like this is a good deal. If you like to dress up your cats (I obviously do) and want some kinds of items that don’t appear in the other cat subscriptions, this could be a great subscription to consider.

I am new to this so please forgive me if I’ve misunderstood, but if one of your kitties is allergic to fish, please do not give him/her fish-based food residue. It’s still fish and could hurt them. Thanks!

The cat who can’t eat fish (the orange tabby) isn’t in the food-eating picture because I didn’t let him have it…

(It’s not an allergy, it’s inflammatory bowel disease.)

Lol I love the pics of Madison and monkey with the popcorn hat! Haha… and look at Mr. Kitty taking a bite of that treat! He looks so young in this pic, see what a little indulgence does for someone.

More pictures of cats in hats!!! Love the look on Madison; he’s so not into it. The photo of Monkey in the hat is hysterical. Ragan, thanks for always taking tons of cat pictures with your cat box reviews. It makes my day!

Ragan, I have a question for you. What cat subscription box would you recommend for two indoor cats that are stuck at home while I am at work? Tiny is a year and a half old and Wilco is eight years old. They are both still full of energy, but obviously Tiny is the one who finds ways to get into everything that I attempt to, “lock down,” most days. I would like just toys and treats, but more toys than treats and no items for me, the cat owner. The cat boxes are mostly are around the same price, so price has little bearing on the box that you recommend. I just want them to have some stimulation and something to do while I am away. Thank you! – Leslie

Lately, Meowbox has been the most like what you’re talking about. My cats are 13 (Mr. Kitty), 11 or 12 (Monkey), 10 (Madison), 9 (Sneaky), and 1.5 (Angus) and even some of the older ones have gotten into the Meowbox toys lately (and of course Angus has as well). There is usually one package of treats and the rest toys.
