Now, on to the items!

(This month's book comes with an Owl Crate-exclusive cover!)

The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones - Retail Value $17.99 (On Amazon for $10.49)

Book Summary from Amazon:

When Dee Moreno makes a deal with a devil--her heart in exchange for an escape from a disastrous home life--she finds her trade may be more than she bargained for. And becoming "heartless" is only the beginning. What lies ahead is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she ever could have imagined.

With reality turned on its head, Dee has only a group of other deal-making teens to keep her grounded, including the charming but secretive James Lancer. And as something like love grows between them amidst an otherworldly ordeal, Dee begins to wonder: can she give James her heart when it's no longer hers to give?

The Hearts We Sold is a Faustian tale for the modern age that will steal your heart and break it, and leave you begging for more.

This book also comes with a signed sticker bookplate.

A letter from the author.

And a promotional pin!

Out of Print Poe-Ka Dots Socks - Value $10

These are so fun! (And I love a good pun, so the name of the socks makes these even better!)

Happenstance Coffee Dark Arts Roast - 2 oz Coffee Sampler Value $3

This blend is a classic dark roasted Sumatra with notes of orange, almond, and dark chocolate. And it tasted great! I'm really loving the branding of the Happenstance Coffee blends, too. (Check them out if you are GoT or Fresh Prince fan!)

Ooly Fountain Pen - Value $5

This is a fountain pen set with 3 purple ink cartridges.

I've never used a fountain pen before (I always assumed they were complicated), but this one is super easy to use.

Yay for fancy pens!

Sleep Hollow and Other Short Stories by Washington Irving - Value $15

This short story collection includes:

  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
  • Rip Van Winkle
  • The Spectre Bridegroom
  • The Devil and Tom Walker
  • The Pride of the Village
  • Old Christmas

The level of scary I can handle maxes out at going on The Haunted Mansion ride, so these short stories are probably too much for me. I may end up gifting this beautiful paperback!

Savage Song Inspired Sticker - Value $1?

I loved Victoria Schwab's Shades of Magic series, and this book is on my to-read list. So, this sticker is a nice reminder!

Treehouse of Books Double Sided Bookmark - Value $1?

This bookmark is inspired by Six of Crows. Another book on my list! (If you've read it and recommend it, please let me know!)

And lastly, each OwlCrate box now comes with an exclusive pin to match the theme!

Verdict: I thought this was a great box - and I always appreciate a double-book month! As I mentioned earlier, I'm not into scary stories, but I had to give this book a try, and it has surprised me! Here's the first sentence of the book:

A demon was knitting outside the hospital.

You have to read more when you read that, right? The book has great pacing, and so far I'm handling the demons.

In general, the value of this box is getting harder to calculate since there are so many exclusives - even the book cover! That being said, I definitely think the box is worth the cost, and the thoughtful curation makes it so special and fun to unbox.

What do you think of the August OwlCrate box? Did you love the book?

How do you find someone’s profile in order to message tjem? A lovely woman named Sheri agreed to send me the crow card and pin from this box, but I don’t know how to reach her.

I just signed up and looking forward to my first box this month. I have teen boys and a 9 year old girl….would the books for this box or the JR would for them or is it really mainly for adults….young (as in 20 on up?)?

When does this ship, I looked on “my account” and it didn’t say…or at least I didn’t see it.

Also, weird, I have another bookmark from the Six of Crows with the same quotes. I think it may have also been from OwlCrate.. So weird.

I have the Poe-ka dot cosmetic bag from their last round with that print. Love it, but glad I didn’t get this box for a repeat of the print. I had a feeling that it would be that print again off the spoiler.

I love that pen – just bought the last purple one in stock on Amazon!

I loved the book this month! It was really good, even though I’m not into contemporary YA that much.

@Liz, you HAVE to read Six of Crows. It’s amazing. I powered through the duology in 2 days because I couldn’t put it down. Much better than the Grisha Trilogy that proceeded it.

Oh man, wish I would have got this one now! I love the Sleepy Hollow cover! And the book sounds good even though I’m with you, it might be too scary for me. Such cute stuff. And those socks! I mean, come on!

The Hearts We Sold was not for me, but that’s okay. I enjoyed Sleepy Hollow but haven’t finished the rest of the short stories in the compilation. Loved all the extras, especially the punny Poe socks. Oh and the fountain pen!!! Omg I love it so much. My husband enjoyed the coffee, especially for a dark roast. This was my first ever Owl Crate and I am over the moon in love with the subscription now. Can’t wait to receive September’s box! Another bonus for me is that my little brother is just about 16 years old, so I get to pass on all my books to someone who will appreciate them.

I loved this book! I usually don’t read a lot of YA so I was hesitant about this box, but decided to give it a try and I loved everything including the book. It was well written, fast paced and a fun read. I was invested in the characters and loved the theme. I’m looking forward to this month’s.
