Oh, something cute they did this month was printing some affirmations and encouragement inside the lid!

12 Benefits Instant Healthy Hair Treatment – 1.5 fl oz, Value $4.13 (buy an 8 oz. bottle for $22)

I love leave-in treatments! This one has a lot of different benefits for your hair, including smoothing, strengthening, color protection, improvement in manageability, adding shine and softness, etc. This gave my hair a silky finish and made it feel more hydrated and strong, too. The smell is nice, too!

Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Primer - 0.25 fl oz, Value $9.75 (buy 1 oz. for $39)

Smashbox has an entire line of primers, and if you’ve had a beauty subscription box before you’ve probably tried a primer from Smashbox before. This kind is made to smooth pores and mattify your complexion. Additionally, it does everything primers are made to do in general, which is making your foundation go on more smoothly, give you more coverage with less product, and helping foundation stay in place and looking fresh longer. I’ve tried this before and I like it. I don’t really need a mattifying primer, though ( I have dry skin and like a dewy/natural complexion) so this will be passed along to my mama!

Daily Concepts Your Facial Mini Scrubber – Value $8

This was the sample choice I was sent (I forgot to pick my own – oops!), which is okay because it’s the sample that was the new discovery for me. I don’t generally reach for a facial sponge but I liked trying this one. It was gentle but it’s still a solid exfoliation.

Seeing as it’s still a physical exfoliant, though, particularly sensitive skin may want to use a light hand when trying this for the first time.

Sumbody Soaps Milky Rich Soap – 1 oz, Value $1.98 (buy 3, 3 oz. bars for $17.85)

I don’t normally go for bar soaps, but this one is great! I received the “Milky Rich” scent variation and it’s just light and fresh. This soap left my skin really soft and felt moisturized with none of the uncomfortable residue that can be typical with bar soaps.

Lord & Berry Glow Strobe Pencil - 0.02 oz, Value $10

This strobe pencil has a shimmery, champagne color. The design of this pencil, being so precise, is probably best for detailing like along the bridge of your nose and eyes/brow bones. You could totally blend it out along your cheekbones but it just may take a little more labor than a larger highlighter. That being said, I really like this – the formula has great pigment, blends easily, stayed all day, and I definitely prefer to use a shimmery champagne over a plain white pencil for brightening my eyes.

Here’s a swatch of the strobe pencil – the color works perfectly for me.

Verdict: Even though I forgot to pick my own sample this month, this was a good Birchbox for me. I was a little underwhelmed when unboxing/photographing, but after trying all the products I think they work well for me and were good discoveries – which is what sample boxes are all about!

As far as value goes, everything adds up to $33.86. I’m happy with that value for a $10 discovery box, especially because all of the products ended up working well for me.

This was a busy month for me and I also missed the sample choice window. I’m usually drawn to the curated boxes but every once in awhile there’s a sample choice I just can’t live without. So when the Sept box showed up, I had high hopes that they really looked at my profile well. I got another Oribe dry shampoo, which is a high-end really nice dry shampoo, but I’ve had it in several boxes this year. I always get mad when I see it again, until I use it and realize I didn’t have to go out and buy the expensive full-size because I’ve had so many of them. I love what it does my hair. The other samples were just meh though. I’ve been with Birchbox since the very beginning and I do feel like they’ve slipped up a bunch. I’ve thought about unsubbing and going for boxycharm but I never do. I feel like the second I sign up for it it’s going to be a disappointment because of how good the past 3 months have been. Decisions, decisions…🙄 😉

I used the REDHOT code and did not receive the Smashbox Cosmetics Be Legendary Liquid Lip Metal in Crimson Chrome that I was supposed to. The samples I received weren’t all that impressive anyway. All in all, I’m very disappointed with Birchbox so far. Not a good first impression at all.

I did not receive the sample that I chose. However, I did end up liking everything inside my box. Besides a hair oil that I received. I wish they would listen a little more to my “hair needs.” I always seem to get things that I do NOT want or use for my hair.
However, I must give Birchbox a big 5 out of 5 stars, they always ship very quickly. I have only been with Birchbox a few months, but they do better with shipping compared to the other boxes I get… Ipsy and Boxycharm. I still have not even got my first month of Boxycharm… and its 9-25-17.

Box twins. I picked my sample and did not want the curated box then ended up with a bunch of items from the curate box that I did t want, go figure. My favorite was the soap. I have dry skin so no idea why I got a pore minimizing primer, it’s like my profile wasn’t even looked at and they sent out random boxes.

I actually prefer that Smashbox primer to their others. I’m not down with the whole dewy look and my t-zone is an oil slick by noon even with heavy foundation and finishing powder if I don’t use a mattifying primer.

Every now and then I get an urge to resubscribe to Birchbox and then I look at a review and see they’re still sending out stuff I’ve tried lots of times before, even though I’ve quit most beauty boxes, and the urge passes.

I picked the the face scrubber, but didn’t get it. I actually forgot I chose it, until I saw this post – happy with my box anyway, I guess it wasn’t that important.

I think if you stick with beauty boxes in general, long enough – you will have the entire collection of Smashbox primers.

Just sayin’.

Melissa Nelson

how do I get the free month, as there’s no coupon code on this page for it. Thanks!

I did not pick my sample either, and Birchbox did a fantastic job to send samples that match my profile. There was a good mix of hair, skin, and make up product.
