The Story Box Picture Book Review + Coupon – July 2017
The Story Box is a monthly children’s book subscription. They offer three subscription options: Board Books Package (children ages 0 – 2 1/2 years), Picture Book Package (children ages 2 1/2 – 6 years), and the Family Package (for multiple children in various age ranges).
What I find unique about The Story Box is that the boxes are curated by a speech pathologist and the included parent guide (or tip card for board books) give language activities and hands-on activities that go along with each story. The picture book parent guide is divided into three age ranges (toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary) so you can pick which language concepts best match your child’s age and ability.
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Thank You and Good Night by Patrick McDonnell – Value $6.99 on Amazon (retail price $15.99)
Patrick McDonnell is an absolute icon and with this book, you can see why. Three little friends (elephant, bear, and bunny) have a sleepover party with tons of fun from making silly faces to jumping on the bed and too-big pajama bottoms slipping off. My daughter said, “I love this book Mommy!” and we promptly read it again. Such a fun story!
The parent guide concept we used for early elementary aged children. I had my son give me an oral sequence of our getting ready for bed routine. Though this was listed under hands-on activities it was really a language concept idea, but we had fun with it.
A Bed for Bear by Clive McFarland – Value $1.45 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)
Bear goes off looking for the perfect bed to begin his long hibernation. He thinks the cave with his family is too crowded. He tries out many other animals’ beds but they each have a flaw. At the end of the book, he returns to the cave and appreciates it more this time around. We loved the illustrations and the story had some laugh out loud moments as well. Our favorite part was how Clive McFarland gives the animals a lot of side-eye expressions making them look shifty and funny.
The Parent Guide concept I used this month was the hands-n toddler idea to build our own cave. We read this book under the dining room table with a sheet draped over the top. My kids loved this activity!
Verdict: The Story Box’s value this month was over $8 (using Amazon prices) which is far below the cost of the box ($19.99 and free shipping). Using retail prices the value is much higher of course. We enjoyed both selections this month and we also enjoyed the extension activities from our Parent Guide. We find the real value in The Story Box isn’t just the books themselves, though they frequently find lesser known titles I’ve never seen before which is exciting, the value for us is all the extension activities to build our children’s language skills.
