Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Info Card

The June 2017 box is listed as box #002, but so was our May box.... after taking a quick look online, I'm fairly certain this is actually box #003. This letter from Associate Editor Kit Fox introduces this month's theme as comfort.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Info Card

The info card lists out some details on all the items included, including retail prices.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Epic Wipe Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Epic Wipe

Epic Wipes - Value $2.50 (Buy a pack of 10 on Amazon for $24.99)

I've seen this brand around before but hadn't seen one in person. This package is slightly bigger than a cliff bar, and contains one huge 31.5" x 19.7" wet wipe!

This isn't just a super-sized baby wipe though: it's made from bamboo, is biodegradable, paraben-free, and uses eucalyptus as an antibacterial element.

I'm not likely to use this in my fitness routine since I usually run around my home and can take a shower after. But I'm happily tossing this into my backpack for my upcoming trip to Iceland, where we'll be camping for three nights. I've heard that during the busy season lines for shower facilities at the campgrounds can be long, so I'm sure it will come in handy!

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Mighty Bar Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Mighty Bar

Organic Prairie Bacon & Apple Mighty Bar, 1 oz. - Value $3.50 (Available on Amazon in a case of 12 for $42.50)

I'm happy to see more top-quality and healthy snacks in this subscription. It's been awhile since I've had any jerky, and I was really pleased with this organic, grass-fed beef bar. It packs 8 grams of protein with a lot of flavor! The bar was softer and easier to chew than regular jerky and was pleasantly spicy and salty.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Flip Flops Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Flip Flops

Hari Mari Dunes $15 Coupon

This is listed as a 'Bonus Item" in the info card. Hari Mari Dunes usually retail for $45, so this is a generous 33% discount if you're inclined to use it!

I personally prefer slides to flip-flops, but I like that these sandals have arch support and fabric straps with a memory-foam toe post. If you've ever tried this brand, please comment and tell me what you think!

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Stinger Gold Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Stinger Gold

Honey Stinger Gold Gel, 3- 1.2 oz packets - Total Value $3.16 (Available on Amazon in a case of 24 for $25.26)

This is also listed as a bonus item this month. The instructions say to consume with water every 45 minutes.

I personally haven't used energy gels in my running because I'm still working my way up to longer distance runs. I love honey though, and this packet is pretty much just honey with some additional ingredients – it doesn't taste fake at all to me. I'd be inclined to reach for this again once I'm running longer distances, or if I need a boost before my next workout.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Squirrel's Nut Butter Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Squirrel's Nut Butter Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Squirrel's Nut Butter

Squirrel's Nut Butter, 2 oz. - Listed Value $13.95

Funny story: I didn't read the fine print on this canister at first, and thought it was the cutest packaging for a peanut butter sample that I'd ever seen. I didn't notice my mistake until later when I saw the $13.95 retail price on the info card! I did a double take and realized they were talking about a totally different kind of "nut butter"!

This is an anti-chafing salve made from natural ingredients: coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, vitamin e and other essential oils. In addition to rubbing this onto any high friction areas prior to working out, you can also use this for dry and cracked skin like any other healing salve. The scent is pleasantly chocolatey from the cocoa butter, too, and a little bit goes a long way so this tin will last a long time. I was happy to see it also works well as a lip balm since I often have a hard time with my lips drying out on runs.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Trucker Hat Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Trucker Hat Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Trucker Hat

Oiselle Heritage Trucker Hat - Retail Value $29 (on sale for $20)

Thanks to Popsugar's June Box, I know that trucker hats are cool again! Runner's World included this in their 'comfort' box since it helps block the sun and the mesh back provides some airflow during the hot summer months.

At first, I wasn't super excited about this, but it's actually a pretty nice hat. The mesh is really soft and flexible, not stiff plastic like some hats of this style. The brim is really substantial and holds its shape well, and it actually fits on my small head. I'm going to be getting a lot more wear out of this than I'd have originally thought!

Oiselle is a company that is new to me, and I'm happy to see they are women-led company focusing on women's athletic apparel.

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Amphipod Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Amphipod

Amphipod Swift-Clip Cap Light - Value $14.95

This little guy is definitely something I'm looking forward to using once the days get shorter and my runs get darker. It's a simple little LED light designed to clip onto your hat!

Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Amphipod Runners World Box June 2017 Review - Amphipod

The light has two settings: click once for steady light, and click again for a blinker. I'm always concerned about visibility on night-time runs, so this is a great minimal piece of safety equipment to have on hand.

Here it is modeled on the hat for scale:

Ready to hit the road!

Verdict: Our second box from Runner's World was a decent follow up on the first, and was full of useful products. Not including the coupon for the flip flops, they still managed over $67 of goods at their retail prices. I do feel that $29 for a trucker hat seems a little overpriced... but it is nicer than the average hat for sure, and even if I were to value the hat at $20, the overall value of the box is still good for a box in the fitness category. I'm really happy to see they've continued to include eco-friendly and organic products in the mix, as well as purely useful items like the Amphipod light. Looking forward to seeing the theme next month!

I got May’s box on the 15th, June’s box on the 11th, and now it’s July 23rd, and I have not gotten a box yet.
I did the 6 month subscription.

Hopefully they are working out some kinks, and haven’t just fallen off the planet!

This is not a comment on the box, but I’m hoping it’s helpful to Lacey! If you like the idea of the amphipod light for winter runs, consider a more pricey investment if the night runner 270 shoe lights. I LOVE them. Mine were about $55. They recharge through a USB and I’ve not had any issues. The additional weight to my shoes is neglible and they are very secure. They have high beams, low beams, flash setting and rear facing red lights that are always on. I highly recommend.

Thanks for the tip! Love the idea of having rear facing red lights too.

This looks very lame from a running magazine. That’s all they could come up with? I wouldn’t buy this.

I agree. Last months box was a little better. Still not impressed enough to subscribe. I think I was expecting more especially from Runner’s World. I will wait for the next box to see if it gets better.

Last month was definitely better in my opinion, mostly thanks to the FlipBelt. I think it takes some time for new boxes to really hit their stride, so I’m still curious to see what else they have up their sleeve going forward.

I was hoping for more too, I did the 6 months, so hopefully they are going to do better.
The shoe coupon is useless. I have a peeve with paying to get a coupon, when I don’t get a sample.
I saw it and was hoping it was like that awesome flip belt coupon, but it would only cover a third of a $45 pair of flip flops, which means they are still $30…. which is double what I would spend on flip flops anyway.

Laurie

I agree!
