Beaver’s Lodge by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert - Value $15.95
This is a sweet tale of friendship and teamwork. Beaver falls while putting the finishing touches on his lodge. It gets broken and he gets a little banged up. Luckily he has great friends, Porcupine and Bear, who not only take care of him and give him a place to recover but also build him a new beautifully decorated lodge. My son enjoyed this story very much!
Pond by Jim LaMarche - Value $15.19 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)
Oh my, the lighting in this book just slays me. Jim LaMarche is an amazing artist and his illustrations are truly breathtaking. The fact that the story is nature-filled and slowly told like oozing warm honey only adds to the pleasure of this book. One we will come back to again and again.
The Snurtch by Sean Ferrell - Value $13.93 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)
Ruthie has a problem at school and it’s not what you may think. It’s not reading or writing, it’s not the friends in her class or her teachers. It’s a Snurtch. And the Snurtch comes out when she’s feeling jealous or anxious. Ruthie learned to sometimes tame her Snurtch and she also learns that all the kids in her class have their very own, because nobody is well-behaved all the time. I found the story a bit flat and disjointed, though I did enjoy the artwork very much.
My Zoo by Ellen Giggenbach - Value $15.95
Lillypost is upping their game! According to their Instagram account, some subscribers have been asking for some more variety in the types of books they send. So this month they sent My Zoo which is a make your own model set. There pages upon pages of easy to punch-out animals, people, and props along with a play board. This activity encourages creativity and storytelling, two things I love to inspire in my own children. I hope Lillypost continues on this path and mixes it up occasionally instead of only four storybooks every month.
Verdict: The value this month was over $61 (using Amazon’s prices) which I’m very happy with and is more than double the cost of the box ($26 a month with free shipping)!! The books are always well curated, beautifully wrapped and represent a variety of topics, authors, and illustrators. Our favorites this month were Pond and My Zoo. With four new hardcover books every month this is a great subscription to quickly grow your home library at a fabulous price and now that they’re starting to include some activity books this is solidly my favorite children’s book subscription of all the ones I review.
