Joe Santagato Speak Out - Value $19.99? (based on similar version)
Hasbro teamed up with YouTube star, Joe Santagato, who I was not familiar with prior to receiving the box, for this exclusive adult edition of the ridiculous mouthpiece challenge game. Game participants each wear a plastic mouthpiece that keeps your mouth open wide enough that it looks pretty hilarious. That point is, as I'm sure you've guessed, that it totally hinders your speech. As you draw from a deck of phrases, you attempt to annunciate each word (again, adult-only content) while the opposing team attempts to guess. The timer counts down as you try to properly say phrases like, "Buy me some bruschetta from the deli." Each successful guess earns a card.
The version of Speak Out comes with 4 mouthpieces.
You'll also receive 100 cards with phrases on each side.
Playing this game was admittedly pretty funny from the start. It's tough to get past the sheer absurdity of seeing your friends with the mouthpieces inserted in their mouths. I had seen a lot out there about Speak Out, so I was really excited to try it myself! I did feel that the novelty wore off after several minutes of playing, though. And make sure that you play with people who can laugh at themselves! That's totally key.
Box of Rocks - Value $14.99
This trivia game begs the question: are you smarter than a box of rocks? With each turn, you have 3 chances to beat the rocks at the 300 multiple choice trivia questions that are sprinkled across 100 cards. Each answer is 0, 1, or 2. Someone will read you a question, you speak your answer, and then shake the box containing the numbered rocks to see if you are in fact correct or, dun dun dunnn, the ROCKS are.
You will advance either the human pawn or the third rock one space on the score card depending on who guessed right.
Each round only takes a few minutes.
I really enjoyed playing this. Trivia games are cool because I always feel like I come out of them learning a lot (even if many of the facts are somewhat useless). It took a little while to get a hang of how it works, but, once you get moving, it's pretty entertaining.
Judgemental: Famous Figures Do Battle - Value $19.99?
A board game! Well, kind of. This is more of a tournament bracket-style debating game, but the interactive bracket is displayed across a board where cards are also placed. Each tournament consists of 3 rounds and starts with 8 contenders (even if you only have 3 players). Basically, each player draws a card from the contender deck to represent each round. You must also choose an announcer among players. The announcer introducers 2 contenders by flipping over their cards (a vegetarian werewolf vs. Napoleon, for example), and a card is chosen from the contest deck. Contest cards reveal the feud topic, and each player has one minute to prove their argument as to why they should win the contest round. Players vote after each round until a champion is declared! I based my value on similar games, since Judgemental has not been released for sale yet.
This was probably my favorite of all of the games. It's definitely silly, like Speak Out, but without any gimmicks. The bracket style is straightforward, and it's fun to represent different historical figures in a debate-style forum. You do have to be somewhat familiar with some of history's greats, though. And those couple of years experience on your high school debate team help too.
Verdict: A gaming crate is a such an awesome concept to me, and the Hasbro Gaming Crate did not disappoint. This subscription is a great way to keep things fresh in your home for when guests come over. I was super impressed with the variety, too! One silly game that requires a bit of a physical exertion, a trivia card game, and tournament-style card game with reference to historical figures. I think the $55 value for $49.99 cost is fair considering that subscribers are getting early access to games, and getting exclusive variants.
