Birchbox Man Subscription Box Review – August 2017

Birchbox Man is a monthly grooming and lifestyle subscription box for men. Each month, you’ll receive 3-4 sample size items to try along with another lifestyle item that you can select. The selection process opens about a month before shipping and, typically, allows you to pick 1 of 3 selection items.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: Birchbox Man

The Cost: $20 a month ($16.25 a month with annual subscription)

There is 1 limited time deal right now:

The Products: Men’s grooming and lifestyle products.

August’s theme was “A Method to you Madness” and sought to bring you a little organization to your daily routine.

As always, you’ll receive an information card. Here, you’ll find information about each item including the full-size retail price. Don’t worry, I’ll do the math for you to break each one down.

Tooletries Mini Koby Bag in Charcoal – Value $17.99

Each month, Birchbox Man allows you to select one lifestyle item for your upcoming box. This month, I went for something a little different than I usually would – I went for the mini dopp kit!

It’s fully made of rubber – so any accidents or water is not a problem for this dopp bag. If something breaks inside, it’s totally leak-resistant, so it’ll keep that terrible mess inside, at least.

There’s more than enough room to carry this month’s samples and a lot more.

COOLA SPF 50 Sport in Fresh Mango – Value $2.18 (based on full-size price)

I haven’t received too many sunblocks in Birchbox Man – and this one arrived just in time to finish out summer.

This goes on sheer – and has the most intense and pleasant mango smell ever. It’s strong – so if you hate mangos, you should give this one away.

Marlowe No. 122 men’s Facial Scrub – Value $0.75 (based on full-size price)

I got a half-ounce sample of the Marlowe No. 122 facial scrub.

It’s paraben and phthalate free and works in a combination of Passionflower Fruit, Green Tea, Willow Bark, and Deep Sea Algae extracts to scrub away dead skin cells and moisturizer while it’s at it. It comes with more of a floral scent – but nothing too strong.

Baxter of California Super Shape Skin Recharge Cream – Value $3.60 (based on full-size price)

The highest value sample is this skin recharge cream.

This moisturizes very nicely and is relatively scentless – perfect for a little pick-me-up for your face in the morning.

Original Penguins Premium Blend – Value $0.97 (based on full-size price)

I’m not a cologne guy, but this one seems like one I’ll keep around in case I need it.

It’s got a citrus/floral scent rolled into one – I was ready to hate it, but it’s really not too bad.

Verdict: You’re getting around $25-26 in value this month – which is pretty decent for the $20 price tag. Overall, I’ve enjoyed trying a bunch of different products while also guaranteeing my one big-ticket item, so the fact that it hasn’t provided crazy value hasn’t really stopped me from enjoying this each month.

  1. I subscribe to this for my husband. We did a six month trial. The samples are very small. Wish I could find a good men’s box. I will have to say that he has found a few products that he has liked and ordered full size from Birchbox. His July box had two pairs of socks and his August box had some good boxers. That has made up for the small samples. I will probably keep him on this sub until I find another with decent size products because he is happy that it’s not just me getting boxes for one. Most other men’s grooming boxes have ties and cufflinks and other gadgets he won’t use. He also does $ shave club, bamboo sock co. and Underwear expert.

  2. Wow, minus the makeup bag, this box looks awful. Their profit margins must be sky high. This does not look like a $20 box. Nice review as always though!!
