Every month, I look forward to tasting the selection of wines in my VineBox, so I jumped at the opportunity to review this special edition Valentine’s Day VineBox!

VineBox has some of my favorite packaging! The black boxes are sturdy, very classy, and perfect for gifting. I love that they can easily be re-used for storage.

Here’s a shot inside:

The wine vials are securely packed in laser cut foam.

Now let’s check out the wine!

VineBox-october-2016-chianti

2013 Corte Di Valle Chianti Classico - Value $18 ($9 per vial)

VineBox wines are handpicked by sommeliers from boutique wineries across Europe and then transferred into VineBox’s signature glass vials using proprietary technology that preserves the integrity of the wine. Each vial contains 10 centiliters of wine. (FYI- 10 centiliters = 3.38 oz., which is about 3/4 the size of a full glass of wine.) The design on each vial maintains the vineyard’s original bottle design.

The first wine in this box is a really lovely Chianti. I’ve always liked Chianti, and this one is really tasty. It’s earthy, dry, a little spicy, and the flavor reminds me of dark red berries.

2012 Don Paolo Aglianico - Value $20 ($10 per vial on VineBox)

Next up is another Italian wine, an Aglianico from the Campagnia region. The flavor is bold, complex, and a little zippy. VineBox pinpoints flavors of dark fruits, cocoa, vanilla, and black pepper.

Habrard Crozes-Hermitage - Value $18 ($9 per vial)

The last wine included in this special edition box is a French Syrah from the Rhône valley. This wine is so good! It’s dry and medium-bodied, and the flavor reminds me of dark fruit. VineBox also recommends looking for the flavor of rose petals, but I’m not sure I can pick up on that. Still, this wine is balanced and really delicious. It’s one of those wines that I can’t put down!

Ritual Chocolate Belize 75% - Value $12

In addition to the wine, this special box contains two different bars of single origin chocolate, and the first is a 75% bar from Belize. This is my first time trying Ritual Chocolate, and I absolutely love the packaging!

To open up the wrapping, you flip up a paper tab on the back of the bar:

The outer wrapping flips open to reveal the inner packaging, and then you rip open the brown paper to reveal the chocolate.

I’ve never seen such beautiful packaging on a chocolate bar before! The chocolate itself is fantastic, too. This bar is rich, spicy, and a little earthy. The flavors are complex and the taste is incredible.

Ritual Chocolate Madagascar 75% - Value $8

Here’s the second bar!

Again, I just love how the outer wrapping unfolds to reveal the bar. Such presentation!

This bar is delicious, too. Compared to the other one, this chocolate is much fruitier and brighter. The tasting notes for this bar include raspberry, citrus, and peanut, and I definitely agree that this bar’s flavor is reminiscent of raspberries.

My husband and I had a lot of fun with this box, and we enjoyed sampling the wines with the chocolate bars. It was a lot of fun to see how each wine brings out different flavors in the chocolate. My favorite combination has to be the Chianti with the Belize bar. When I tasted them together it was like an earthy whirlwind of deep, rich flavor. So good!

Verdict: I really like this Valentine’s Day VineBox! The wines were all delicious, and I loved trying them alongside the two bars of Ritual Chocolate. Wine and chocolate is a classic Valentine’s Day combination, and I think this would make a perfect Valentine’s Day gift. VineBox usually costs $29 per month, so considering that this bundle contains two VineBoxes and $20 worth of Ritual Chocolate, it’s a pretty great deal!
