Awaken Box is a new subscription service that delivers handmade global artisanal goods and supports global charities.

From Awaken Box:

Our mission is to awaken hearts and minds to the needs of our neighbors across the globe and to support artisans in third world countries who are trying to sustain a business for themselves to simply survive.

That's a noble mission. Bravo!

This card was included this month, describing the contents. This month, instead of focussing on a specific country, it's an animal themed box! Fun!

awaken-february-2017-recipe

Our recipe of the month is Sweet Potato and Duck Chowder. It looks really decadent!

Giraffe Keychain

This keychain and the next item were both handcarved in Kenya by Craft Options, a husband and wife team dedicated to teaching skills to underserved teen boys. This keychain is so cute! It's carved from wood, and the craftsmanship is impressive for such a small trinket.

Bird Picture Holder

The craftsmanship in this piece is exquisite! I love this! It's so unique. I don't know if I've ever seen anything like it. I almost feel guilty keeping it for myself. But I'm going to.

Elephant Coin Purse

This coin purse, on the other hand, is something I will gift to my little niece, and she will love it. The info card even suggests gifting it to a special little girl in your life! It is a little cotton coin purse made by artisans in Thailand who have been rescued from sex trafficking.

Verdict: I am really enjoying my subscription to Awaken Box! I thought it was a nice way to break things up by choosing a theme instead of a country, and I liked all the items I received this month. I especially love the picture holder! Isn't it so interesting? It's hard to know what the specific retail values of anything they send might be, but I think the contents are always well worth the cost of the box.

That giraffe keychain is sooooo cute! Giraffes are my all time favorite animal! If anyone is planning on putting it up for swap let me know.

OK, I’m definitely NOT a vegetarian, but even I think it’s a little weird that an “animal themed” box would include a recipe that involves, ummm, animal flesh. That said, the picture holder and elephant change purse are both adorbs.

I am a vegetarian but regardless I found the recipe choice in poor taste in light of the specific theme.

I’m not a vegetarian either, but the recipe kind of creeped me out. Poor choice for a playful animal themed box.

Thanks for the great review! I subscribe to this box, and I agree that the bird picture holder is beautifully crafted but I’m just not at all a bird person. I think I’ll keep my giraffe because my Jack & Lucy pom keychain is looking a bit raggedy. And the coin purse is darling (mine has a blue elephant) but I’ll also gift this! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite boxes, just for the uniqueness, the artisans and their stories, and their customer service is one of the best, in my opinion and experience.

General Feedback. i love the idea of supporting charities around the world and giving other individuals jobs. I’m not sure what I would do with this box. The makeup bag is good,. an you please put a ruler next to the product so we can see the size. The picture frame is adorable but not sure of the size of picture it would hold. Though the other item is cute. I’m afraid these items may just end up in a drawer collecting dust.

Agree with Melissa. I like the idea of it, but I don’t have use for any of the items.

As Anna mentioned it is a coin purse not a makeup bag. Mine appears to be 3″ x 3″.
