My box included a one-page flyer promoting "One Stop Holiday Shopping." I received my box a couple days before Christmas, but many of these clubs could easily be gifted for an upcoming birthday, Mother's or Father's Day.
A newsletter was also included, describing each brewery for this month: Peak Organic Brewing Company and Matt Brewing Company. I am not familiar with either brewing company, so this will definitely come in handy as my husband and I try the beers. It also helps in appreciating the brewery's process and ultimately discovering what we like or dislike about each beer.
Peak Organic Brewing Company IPA
I was so excited to see organic beer in this month's box. Neither of us has purposefully sought out organic beer and after reading more about Peak Organic, it is clear they are dedicated to an overall organic and sustainable process. Unfortunately, neither of us prefer IPAs and this beer, in particular, was too hoppy and bitter to enjoy. There is a 7.1% alcohol content, which might be why the taste was stronger than typical.
Peak Organic Brewing Company Winter Session Ale
This beer has a 5.0% alcohol content and tasted so much better! It tastes like a traditional winter or seasonal ale, with nice, but not an overpowering spice. I also enjoyed the hints of citrus.
Saranac Cold Brew Coffee Lager
This was hands down the favorite this month! You definitely need to like coffee to enjoy this beer, but the taste was not overwhelming. The lager has a 5.2% alcohol content, is very smooth and I was happy to also detect a caramel flavor. For me, this is a winning combination.
Saranac Black Forest Black Beer
I was most excited to try this beer, but unfortunately, it was not as bold as I was hoping for. This lager has 5.3% alcohol content lager and pours much lighter than you would think. It's good, but I've definitely tried better darker beers through The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. I was not able to find this beer on Saranac's website, but I totally want to try the S'more Porter!
Here's a comparison of all the beers. From left to right: Peak Organic Brewing Company IPA, Saranac Cold Brew Coffee Lager, Peak Organic Brewing Company Winter Session Ale, and Saranac Black Forest Black Beer.
Verdict: This was a pretty good box from The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. For $42.95 a month (if you include shipping), you receive 12 beers, which breaks down to $3.57 a beer. While not a bargain, you would likely pay more for each beer out at a bar or sampling at the brewery itself. And I like how this subscription brings local and craft-brewed varieties straight to your home. 2 of the beers were awesome, and I'm mostly pleased to have found a seasonal beer that is also organic and consciously produced.
