Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst – Retail Value $17.99 (On Amazon for $10.58)

owl-crate-december-2016-0010

Book Summary from Amazon:

An atmospheric and romantic debut fantasy perfect for fans of Ash and The Winner’s Curse.

Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile kingdoms. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a land where magic is forbidden.

Now Denna has to learn the ways of her new kingdom while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine, sister of her betrothed.

When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, they discover there is more to one another than they thought—and soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more.

But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.

A Darker Shade of Magic Quote Sticker

I absolutely LOVE this book, and Delilah Bard - this is my new favorite sticker!

owl-crate-december-2016-0027

And each OwlCrate box now comes with an exclusive pin to match the theme!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $55 (using the Amazon sale prices and my estimates of some of these exclusive items). I think that's a great value for a book box, especially with the curation, exclusive items, and bonus book extras that OwlCrate includes each month.

I'm having a hard time getting into the book. I'm about 100 pages in, and it still isn't grabbing me yet. If you've finished this book and recommend it, let me know and I'll power through!

I’m struggling a bit with the book, but I think I’ll keep going. I hate leaving books unfinished! Owl Crate is a fun sub, I thoroughly enjoy the variety of books – it’s pushing me to try different genres and authors.

Owl crate books are always the same, I feel like their December book was similar to this. Boring!

This is so tough for me every month. I want to sign up but the price holds me back. It’s a lot of money if the book isn’t great. Sounds like this one was a dud.

This was probably my least favorite book I’ve received from Owlcrate. It is very hard to get into. I was disappointed with my mini Funko too. I was hoping for one of the pets but ended up Draco who is one of my least fave HP characters. So excited for the upcoming Circus box though. And you should check out the new Hootloot subscription box.

Sorry you didn’t have better luck with the Harry Potter Mystery Mini! 🙁 Thanks for letting me know about the book – I think it will be going in the DNF pile.
And thanks for the tip on Hootloot – I just signed up for their newsletter!

I just read this entire book in less than a day!! Don’t skip it without giving it a chance. It’s slow to start but very enjoyable once things start moving alone. I couldn’t put it down.

Rachel

No. That book was painfully hard to read.

I would have loved this box! (as long as I enjoyed the book I guess). So torn on whether to sub or not, it can so hit or miss for me, or for anyone. Just because there are so many different fandoms in the book world, great box though!

I decided to sub after seeing the last few and being excited about the Circus/Carnival theme. I signed up for one month so far, but I do appreciate that you can skip a month if you are subbed and don’t think you’ll like it. On the other hand, there are some great books that I’ve read that I never would have picked up myself based on some youtubers, so I’d imagine this box would be a way to facilitate that as well.

Happy Reading! 🙂
