Awaken Box is a new subscription service that delivers handmade global artisanal goods and supports global charities.

From Awaken Box:

Our mission is to awaken hearts and minds to the needs of our neighbors across the globe and to support artisans in third world countries who are trying to sustain a business for themselves to simply survive.

That's a noble mission. Bravo!

This card was included this month, describing the contents. Awaken usually has a focus on one country per box but this month is holiday themed, so the contents are from different places and organizations.

Our recipe of the month is also usually from the country of interest, but this month it's holiday themed. I love hot cider!

awaken-december-2016-beads

Look at how pretty these beads are! They seem to be the same type of beads featured in the Ugandan/July box, and based on the charity organization mentioned on the info card, I'm betting they are. I love the color!

I love this little bowl, it's so pretty. It seems to be hand painted! It comes from the West Bank and helps to empower women.

awaken-december-2016-ornament

I know I'm really sentimental about the holidays, but this might be my favorite item in the box this month! This angel ornament helps support impoverished children.

Look how pretty she looks on the tree!

Verdict: I am really enjoying my subscription to Awaken Box! Every month they send such beautiful items, and I love feeling like I'm helping to support such important charities and causes around the world. My only wish with Awaken is that they would provide more information about who makes the items and how they are tied to that month's charity organization, but I think this month they did a better job than they sometimes do. Otherwise, I think it's a wonderful subscription at a very reasonable price.

My January box arrived today, can’t wait to get home and see what’s in it. Their shipping is very reliable- always goes out on the 15th with 2 day shipping. Never been late in the 5 months I’ve gotten this box.

As a subscriber, I received an email from Awaken that explained this box and the items in it more fully than in the information in the box I received. I have been a subscriber for several months, but recently cancelled as a part of my budget streamlining plan. But after reading this information I am resubscribing!

For those thinking about subscribing and looking for more information, I wanted to describe the three items according to their email because it definitely made me go back and look at them again with greater appreciation.

The necklace: “This necklace we call our “throwback necklace.” It comes from Uganda and is handmade from recycled cereal boxes! They strip the cardboard, roll it up tight, dip it in glue to seal it, then dye it various colors. ” (Mine is a beautiful sky blue.)

The angel: “The angel … also comes from Uganda! Believe it or not, the body of the angel is made from dehydrated banana peels. The peels are stripped and dried to make this fine material that can be converted into many different crafts. The wings are made from bamboo …” (This is so pretty that I still have it out, even after Christmas.)

The small bowl: “This small ceramic bowl comes from the West Bank. It is cute and perfect for a variety of things including holding dips/dressings, or even something completely different like jewelry.”

And last but not least, I love their goals:

“This was all made possible through your support and through our business model that allows us to reach out to the neglected, come along side the persecuted, and support the least of these. We look forward to what 2017 has in store for Awaken Box and are eagerly awaiting the ministries we will be teaming up with in this upcoming year.”

I’ve gotten 4 awaken boxes and this has been my favorite one. I love the necklace and am glad that the subscription helps others. Very happy with this box.
