Awaken Box is a new subscription service that delivers handmade global artisanal goods and supports global charities.

awaken-jul-inside

"Our mission is to awaken hearts and minds to the needs of our neighbors across the globe and to support artisans in third world countries who are trying to sustain a business for themselves to simply survive." That's a noble mission. Bravo!

The Subscription Box: Awaken Box

The Cost: $39 per month

The Products: Each box contains one or more handcrafted goods from around the world, a country sticker, a recipe, and a "gift from our sponsor." I'm not sure what that means!

Ships to: US for free. There is no information on their site about international shipping, but when I select the country on the check-out page, it looks like they do ship internationally for $25.

Check out the Artisan Subscription Box Directory and make sure to add Awaken Box to your subscription list or wishlist!

This card was included this month, describing the Chayah Children's Home in Uganda. This is the charity the July box supports! It seems like a wonderful, important organization. I really do love boxes that help support good charities.

awaken-jul-recipe

This is our recipe of the month, Ugandan Matoke. It actually looks almost exactly like a dish my grandmother used to make called red flannel hash, except she made it with potatoes instead of plantains. Plantains would we much more nutritious! I wonder if the plantains you use should be green or ripe. Lindsey Morse? Anyone?

awaken-jul-beads

These beads are exquisite! Just look at how beautiful they are! I wish there was some information somewhere in this box about who created this gorgeous necklace!

awaken-jul-exfoliant

Cosmedica Skincare Mineral Enzyme Facial Exfoliant - Value $18.95

I'm guessing this is the "gift from our sponsor," but I really have no idea. This exfoliant is supposed to be good for sensitive skin, so I tried it, and it was fine. It helped smooth out my skin without irritating it or making it feel dry. Awesome!

awaken-jul-bag

awaken-jul-bag-2

This little quilted bag is very pretty. I will definitely put it to good use. I just wish I knew more about where it came from or who made it!

Verdict: Awaken Box is off to a strong but confusing start! I love everything they sent me, I feel like the contents were well worth the cost, and I am thrilled to be supporting such an awesome charity! Those are the important things. The less important thing is that this box left me with so many questions, but it's still important enough to mention. Who made these things? Where did they come from? What happened to the sticker? Who is the sponsor, and what does that mean? I think the answers could be deal breakers or makers for many people.

What do you think of Awaken Box? As always, please let me know if I missed something!

It looks similar to the above, but their picture quality makes it hard to be sure.

The FAQ page on their site is not as clear as many other sites. – I wish it would go into more detail – Does any one have any idea if you can cancel online, or have to cancel via email?

Their website says that each item would have a card from the artisan. Guess they forgot yours?

The necklace is very pretty and i luv that this helps women/(maybe men?) I love that they are not asking for a hand out they are willing to work for it that instills confidence, as a woman I want all of us no matter where shes from to support eachother.Your right tho they should le you know where they are from and who made them.

The necklace looks like it is from 31 Bits. While I don’t see that exact necklace on their site, the beads are distinctive. They are made from recycled paper by Ugandan women. They have beautiful products!

I would guess green plantains; they’re more starchy and less sweet.
