This is my first box from Gobble, and it contained a welcome letter with information about the subscription.
Gobble doesn’t currently ship to my location, but they kindly made an exception so I could sample a box for review. Despite being outside of their delivery area, my box arrived in great shape. They included ice packs were still frozen solid, and all of the ingredients looked fresh.
(Good to know: Gobble currently only ships to a handful of states, but their website indicates that they’re hoping to expand their delivery zone soon!)
Now, on to the food!
Meal #1- Malabar Vegetable Curry with Cucumber Salad & Freekeh Biryani
Gobble’s main selling point is that they send you everything you need to pull together a meal in 10 minutes or less. That’s pretty quick, and I was pretty curious to see how (and if) they could pull it off.
All of the components for each dish come pre-portioned and packed in a larger ziplock bag. The recipes are all laminated. (Smart idea!)
The first meal I picked for this box was Malabar Vegetable Curry with Cucumber Salad & Freekeh Biryani.
Here’s all the ingredients for this dish. Prep was nearly nonexistent. Apart from cleaning the provided herbs, everything was ready to go!
I heated up the biryani in the microwave.
To make the curry, I sautéed butternut squash in a large pot and then added in beans, Indian sofrito, and Malabar curry mix.
The cucumber salad was pre-made, so I only had to transfer it into bowls and top it with feta.
Lastly, I heated up the naan in the oven.
First of all, I have to say that I was really surprised how quickly this meal came together. (I know that’s the point, but still… I was impressed.)
Even better was how absolutely delicious this curry was. The flavors were rich and deep, and my husband told me this is his favorite dish we’ve ever had from a subscription meal box.
The cucumber salad was maybe just a little on the soft side, but it was still tasty.
Meal #2- Vietnamese Crispy Fish with Rice Noodles
My next meal pick was Vietnamese Crispy Fish with Rice Noodles.
Just like the veggie curry dish, pretty much everything for this meal arrived prepped and ready to go! I just cleaned the herbs and sliced the lime.
I mixed the tilapia with turmeric, garlic ginger confit, and some lime juice. After letting it sit for a few minutes, I cooked it in a sauté pan and then added green onions, dill, fish sauce (this was optional), and nuoc cham.
For the rice noodles, I simply heated them in the microwave and then stirred in some nuoc cham. (I haven’t heard of nuac cham, but it’s a light sauce with a bit of sweetness that reminded me a bit like watered down Thai sweet chili sauce.)
This dish was fantastic, and it ended up being my favorite of the week. I’ve never made a dish like this before at home, and I absolutely loved it. From the seasoning on the fish to the peanuts on top, I thought this dish was perfect. I will say, though, that it took me a bit longer to prepare than 10 minutes— maybe 13 or 14.
Meal #3- Braised Beef Bowl with Mexican Rice & Pinto Beans
My last meal pick for this box was Mexican Braised Beef Bowls. When I was unpacking the ingredients for this meal, I noticed that I was missing a couple of things: a lime and cotija cheese. I decided to use one of my own limes and omit the cheese.
The meat for this dish was pre-cooked, so I simply had to warm up the packet under hot water, drain off the juices, and heat it up on the stove. Interestingly, the recipe then instructed me to mix in some whipped eggs. I’ve never mixed egg into beef before, but it was surprisingly tasty.
Next, I warmed up the pinto beans and then, in a separate bowl, I combined sliced tomatoes with green onion, cilantro, and lime.
Lastly, I heated up the rice in the microwave, followed by the tortillas.
I divided everything between two plates, and I have to say that, wow, it was a lot of food! Everything was tasty, though, and I was particularly impressed with the flavors in the Mexican rice.
Both my husband and I had a ton of food left over from this meal, so we ended up having it for lunch the next day, too.
Dessert- White Chocolate & Lemon Cookies
Also included in my box was a bag of pre-scooped, raw cookie dough balls!
Gobble reached out to let us know that “cookie dough is an extra that is thrown in for free for each first-time customer… After their first box, customers can choose to include cookie dough as an add-on to their weekly order for an additional $1.95 per serving when they log into their account and manage their meal selections through “My Upcoming Dinner Kits.” Subscribers can also add a number of sides such as drink mixes and soups.”
I received white chocolate & lemon cookies, and they were pretty darn tasty!
They were substantial, too. Here’s a picture of one in my hand for scale:
They baked up really nicely (crisp around the edges and soft in the middle), and I would definitely consider ordering them again!
Verdict: I’m extremely impressed with my first Gobble box! The meals were all REALLY tasty, and I’m impressed that the recipes all actually came together in 10 minutes (give or take). The cost is a bit higher than some other subscription meal boxes (the cost is on par with Plated and a couple of dollars more per serving than Home Chef, Hello Fresh, and Blue Apron), but there are definitely weeks when I’d be happy to pay a bit more to save time. Also, the portion sizes were all very generous. So much so that I could probably have served three people (instead of two) with each meal. The only negative for me is that Gobble doesn’t list the calorie info for their dishes on the recipe cards. On their website, Gobble does mention that all of their dishes are designed to fit within 500-700 calories, but I think it would be nice to have specific nutritional info for each dish sent out with the box. That’s a small complaint, though, and it certainly wouldn’t keep me from subscribing.
