Rose Congou - Black Tea
Each Tea Discovery Plus Box come with a customer favorite in a slightly larger, 2oz pouch. I chose black tea for my 2oz tea and this blend includes rose petals.
This blend was so fragrant when I opened the pouch! It’s a 3 out of 3 on the caffeine scale and has a steep temperature of 212° with a steep time of 5 minutes. This is a nice, straightforward black tea and the dried rose petals give off a sweet, floral aftertaste. I can see why this is a customer favorite because it’s a great everyday tea. I enjoyed this on it’s own and with a little cream to soften the strength of the black tea.
First Response - Wellness Tea
This echinacea blend features peppermint, elderberry, red clover, rose hips, yarrow, and elderflower. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons but the occasional cold is my least favorite part. So this caffeine-free tea is a nice way to ward off any colds.
This blend is really calm and smooth with a bit of a kick from the peppermint. This is brewed at 195° and the brewing instructions specify that you pour the boiling water in the cup, then add the tea leaves. I chose to drink this hot but I think the lightness of this blend would do really well cold.
Jasmine Lavender - Green Tea
This green tea is a 2 out of 3 on the caffeine scale and only has a steep time of 3 minutes. The jasmine and lavender notes give it a strong floral scent with a delicate taste. This tea instructs you to add the tea leaves to the cup after the boiling water. I’m not familiar with why some teas require this but I assume it’s because they have a more delicate flavor.
The citrus notes cut through the floral flavors to give this a little kick. I love green teas that have a more delicate flavor because you get the caffeine boost without a harsh flavor. I think this would also translate to an iced tea really well.
Chocolate Cashew - Black Tea
This is the first chocolate tea I’ve ever tried and I think I’ll be back for more! This black tea is a 3 out of 3 on the caffeine scale. In addition to the black tea leaves, there are caramel pieces (contains dairy), hazelnuts, and blackberry leaves. This tea has a steep temperature of 212° and a steep time of only 4 minutes.
On its own, this was a strong, nutty black tea with a hint of sweetness but when I added a tiny bit of creamer and sugar, it amplified the caramel aspect of the blend. This does have a high caffeine rating so it feels perfect for a wintery brunch!
Dried Apricot - Black Tea
I absolutely loved the scent of this tea. Black tea can sometimes feel a little harsh to me but the apricot and mango cut through the black tea leaves beautifully. I often add milk or sugar to mellow out my black tea but the fruity aspect of this tea gave me a bit of sweetness with any added sugar.
This is a 3 out of 3 on the caffeine scale which made this a nice coffee alternative. And the steep time is only 3 minutes so you can get that caffeine fix quickly!
Cinnamon Orange - Black Tea
This black tea only has three ingredients - black tea, orange peel, and cinnamon oil. This tea is a 3 out of 3 on the caffeine scale and has a 4-minute steep time. I haven’t tried orange and cinnamon as a combination before and I was shocked at how well they go together! The cinnamon comes through first and it is strong. I’m a fan of cinnamon so this is great for me! The orange flavor comes in right under it and creates a really nice flavor combination.
I think this is another tea that could actually replace my morning coffee. The only problem is that I downed two cups in a very short amount of time! (Then I really felt that 3 out of 3 caffeine rating!)
Berry Flame - Herbal Tea
Berry Flame is a 0 out of 3 on the caffeine scale and contains ginger, ginseng, licorice root, orange hibiscus, rosehips, orange, and tangerine. The citrusy blend is extremely refreshing. I tried this one hot and cold. For hot tea, the steep time is 6 minutes and the boiling temperature is 212°.
The citrus notes and ginger are the most prominent, with just a hint of the licorice root. For iced teas, I prefer herbal or green teas and this one was really nice over ice. I added a tiny bit of sugar for the iced version which made it just the right amount of sweetness to offset the citrus.
Roasted Almond - Fruit Tea
Apple, almonds, cinnamon, and beetroot are the ingredients for this fruit tea. This is a 0 out of 3 on the caffeine scale which is great because it’s perfect for a cozy cup of tea before bed. This has one of the longer steep times at 12 minutes and is worth the wait!
The apple, cinnamon, and almond blend has a really strong scent but the flavor is surprisingly light. I found that I didn’t want to add any milk or sweetener to this because I like the apple flavor that came through and the cinnamon gave it a festive taste. A cinnamon stick and an apple slice added to this made it a perfect seasonal drink.
Verdict: I loved this tea box. I really appreciated the clean design of the packaging and the simplicity of all the information printed right on the pouch. I hadn't paid attention to the specific temperature of water before this and it was fun to be a little more precise with my brewing. Loose leaf tea can be expensive so $29.97 for 40+ cups per box feels more than reasonable. The tea is fresh and the variety of flavors were awesome. I came into this assuming that I would definitely prefer the green tea blend but my favorites from this box ended up being Roasted Almond, Cinnamon Orange, and Dried Apricot! There was a nice mix of familiar flavors and brand new experiences that made this box really exciting.
