BOXO is a subscription box that sends freshly roasted, whole bean coffee directly to your doorstep.
Each month, BOXO travels to a different city in America to find that city’s best roasters. They choose their two favorites and include a bag from each roaster to send to subscribers.
Freshness is a top priority for BOXO, and they ensure that subscribers receive their beans within five days of them being roasted.
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

BOXO boxes contain two different coffees from two different roasters that are based in the same city.
This month’s box features coffee from Washington, DC, my hometown! Woot woot! The roasters featured this month are Vigilante Coffee and Commonwealth Joe.
Normal Human Postcard Print - Value $2.50?
BOXO boxes always contain a print from Normal Human, a screen printing shop based in Kansas City, MO. I like that this month’s print references the election (and in a way that’s not too political). I actually opened up this box on election day, so the timing was just right.
This box also contained an ad for a Caffeine Crawl that’s being held in Portland this month.
Vigilante Coffee Company Gathiruini Kenya (12 oz.) - Value $25
Since this month’s BOXO features coffee from DC, I was excited to see one of my favorite local roasters in the box!
I love Vigilante’s packaging. Check out Lincoln pensively sipping a cup of coffee:
I don’t think I’ve tried the Gathiruini Kenya before, and I’m really glad that BOXO picked it. Coffee Review gave it a score of 95, which is excellent. (On average only 27 roasting companies per year receive a score of 94 points or more from Coffee Review.)
Vigilante describes this coffee as having a mellow acidity and buttery mouthfeel with flavors of caramel and maple syrup, and BOXO suggests taking your time with brewing to really pull out all of the complex flavors from the beans.
I love this coffee! It’s somehow both mouthwateringly flavorful and wonderfully smooth (with great, silky mouthfeel).
Also, I want to point out that BOXO usually sends two 8 oz bags of coffee, but this bag was a full 12 oz. (I weighed it to be sure!) That would be a bonus for any bag, but it’s especially surprising given the retail value of these beans. Wow!
Common Wealth Joe Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Monticello Sunrise (8 oz.)- $10.66
The second featured Washington, DC roaster is new to me. (When I looked them up, though, I discovered they recently opened a cafe not far from me! Field trip time!)
BOXO picked out a lightly roasted Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to include in this box, and it’s really great.
As soon as I opened the bag, I was struck by the aroma of these beans— it smells just like a bucket of red berries!
The flavor of the coffee is nice, too. Common Wealth Joe describes the flavor as melon, but I get more of a chocolatey cinnamon taste.
Verdict: I really like BOXO, and I think it’s a lot of fun to sample two coffees every month that have been roasted in the same city. I love that this month’s coffee came from my hometown! Both coffees were good, but I think my favorite this month has to be the Vigilante Gathiruini Kenya. It really wowed me! The total retail value of the items I received this month totals over $38. That’s the highest value I’ve seen in BOXO, and it might even be the highest value I’ve ever seen in a coffee subscription. What a great box!
What do you think of this month’s BOXO? Are you familiar with either of the roasters featured in this month’s box?
