Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake - Retail Value $17.99 (On Amazon for $10.61)

owl-crate-september-2016-012

Book Summary from Amazon:

Fans of acclaimed author Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood will devour her latest novel, a dark and inventive fantasy about three sisters who must fight to the death to become queen.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose...it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

When I first read the book summary of this, I was wondering how I would enjoy a book without a "good" character. But then I remembered how much I enjoyed reading Fairest, in the Lunar Chronicles, and I think this should be similar.

I'm only a few chapters in, but it's already dark and interesting.

owl-crate-september-2016-014

And this book came with a signed bookplate sticker!

owl-crate-september-2016-005

We also received a map of the world of Three Dark Crowns.

owl-crate-september-2016-004

And on the flipside of the map is a letter from the author.

There was also a promotional paper fortune teller:

Miss  Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Pouch - Value $12

owl-crate-september-2016-016

This zippered pouch is made of sturdy canvas and measures 6 by 9 inches.

Confession: I haven't read this book yet (even though I hear wonderful things.) I can't handle scary books - if you've read this and recommend it, let me know.

REMADE - Season 1 Episode 1 - Value $1.59

This is an interesting concept! It's a series of "episodes" of a book. You subscribe and get a new digital copy each week. This is the first episode of REMADE.

owl-crate-september-2016-019

Summary of the series:

Every minute, 108 people die. This fall, in one of those minutes, twenty-three of those deaths will be teenagers. Now they are humanity’s last hope for survival. Awakened in a post-apocalyptic world and hunted by mechanical horrors, these teens search for answers amidst the ruins of civilization. Fate, love, and loyalty face off in this adrenaline-pumping YA adventure.

daBomb Fortune Telling Bath Bomb - Value $7.50

owl-crate-september-2016-031

This is a big bath bomb! (About the size of a tennis ball.) It smells great, and it also includes an answer to a yes or no question inside!

owl-crate-september-2016-025

Darkness Pin - Value $1?

This is a collector pin for the Darkness OwlCrate box. I think this is the first time they've done a pin for the box theme? This one is numbered, so I'm assuming it will continue in the future!

Passport To a New Wold Promotional Insert - Bonus

owl-crate-september-2016-027

This included an expert for Moon Chosen.

owl-crate-september-2016-028

The Melting Library Celaena's Cake Tin Candle - 2 oz Value $4

owl-crate-september-2016-029

Yay! A candle from one of my favorite series! (And it smells like delicious cake batter!)

owl-crate-september-2016-024

Lastly, this box also included a Six of Crows promotional bookmark. (Just another reminder of my ever growing TBR list!)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $36.50 (using the Amazon sale prices and my estimates of some of these exclusive items). I think that's a decent value for a book box, especially with the curation and bonus book extras that OwlCrate includes each month. (And usually OwlCrate's boxes have a higher value, so I'm OK with a lower value month once in a while.)

Miss Peregrine’s is an excellent book! It’s more mystical and quirky than scary. There are some thriller parts, but (at least this first book) is more about the main character discovering the world.

I want the movie to be good, but I’m still a bit sore they switched up some of the characters. They switched the main female and also changed her powers. I was so excited for this movie, but we’ll see. It’s still a great book regardless.

My daughter and I loved the book! We also really liked the Miss Peregrine’s pouch, the large, great smelling bath bomb and the awesome Celaena’s Cake candle. Can’t wait for the next book in the series for sure.

Yay! So great that you and your daughter share this box together – I love it! 🙂

Well actually this is my daughter’s subscription box.

However, it is the first one we bought and I grabbed a Lit Cube subscription.

And now we have ten subscription boxes between us!

She has three and I have seven.

But we do read each other’s books and share the wearables when appropriate and such. 🙂

It was actually your site and the reviews that got me hooked, so thanks!

Diane

This might be my favorite box I have ever received. I wish I could eat the candle; it smells so delicious. The book sounds incredible and now I have an excuse to take a bath. I just have to think of the perfect question to ask it! I recommend Miss Peregrine’s. It may have scary moments, but it’s more about tolerance than scares. I hope they movie does the book justice.

So glad you loved the box too – that candle is seriously the best smelling thing ever! 🙂

I already finished the book and I’m assuming there will be another based on the ending

It is a trilogy, they have already been published. The next on is called Hollow City and the third is The Library of Souls. All are as good as the first, very fast paced.

Oh Wow! I did not know this. Thanks for the heads up. 🙂

You should read Miss Peregrines. I don’t read scary books either, or watch scary movies or shows for that matter, but Miss Peregrines isn’t scary. It is definitely more magical. I read it awhile ago and when I saw they were coming out with a movie, I had to reread it. Its worth going back for a second read.
And this is the second month for the Owlcrate pin. Last month they sent the dinosaur pin with some kind of “chapter raptor” saying on it.
I just finished Three Dark Crowns tonight and found it to be a good read. Its a first in a series though, so we will have to wait awhile for the next book to come out. And I loved that candle too.

Oh – I didn’t realize Chapter Raptor was an OwlCrate pin – it all makes sense now! (That is one of the best pins ever!)

And thanks for letting me know about Miss Peregrines. It sounds like I can handle it. (And the movie trailer has looked more magical than scary like you said).

Time to add it to my reading list! 🙂
