Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake - Retail Value $17.99 (On Amazon for $10.61)
Book Summary from Amazon:
Fans of acclaimed author Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood will devour her latest novel, a dark and inventive fantasy about three sisters who must fight to the death to become queen.
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose...it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.
The last queen standing gets the crown.
When I first read the book summary of this, I was wondering how I would enjoy a book without a "good" character. But then I remembered how much I enjoyed reading Fairest, in the Lunar Chronicles, and I think this should be similar.
I'm only a few chapters in, but it's already dark and interesting.
And this book came with a signed bookplate sticker!
We also received a map of the world of Three Dark Crowns.
And on the flipside of the map is a letter from the author.
There was also a promotional paper fortune teller:
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Pouch - Value $12
This zippered pouch is made of sturdy canvas and measures 6 by 9 inches.
Confession: I haven't read this book yet (even though I hear wonderful things.) I can't handle scary books - if you've read this and recommend it, let me know.
REMADE - Season 1 Episode 1 - Value $1.59
This is an interesting concept! It's a series of "episodes" of a book. You subscribe and get a new digital copy each week. This is the first episode of REMADE.
Summary of the series:
Every minute, 108 people die. This fall, in one of those minutes, twenty-three of those deaths will be teenagers. Now they are humanity’s last hope for survival. Awakened in a post-apocalyptic world and hunted by mechanical horrors, these teens search for answers amidst the ruins of civilization. Fate, love, and loyalty face off in this adrenaline-pumping YA adventure.
daBomb Fortune Telling Bath Bomb - Value $7.50
This is a big bath bomb! (About the size of a tennis ball.) It smells great, and it also includes an answer to a yes or no question inside!
Darkness Pin - Value $1?
This is a collector pin for the Darkness OwlCrate box. I think this is the first time they've done a pin for the box theme? This one is numbered, so I'm assuming it will continue in the future!
Passport To a New Wold Promotional Insert - Bonus
This included an expert for Moon Chosen.
The Melting Library Celaena's Cake Tin Candle - 2 oz Value $4
Yay! A candle from one of my favorite series! (And it smells like delicious cake batter!)
Lastly, this box also included a Six of Crows promotional bookmark. (Just another reminder of my ever growing TBR list!)
Verdict: This box has a value of about $36.50 (using the Amazon sale prices and my estimates of some of these exclusive items). I think that's a decent value for a book box, especially with the curation and bonus book extras that OwlCrate includes each month. (And usually OwlCrate's boxes have a higher value, so I'm OK with a lower value month once in a while.)
What do you think of the September OwlCrate box?
