This month featured Robots in the selected titles.
Each month includes a card about your selections. It will detail reasons why they selected it and also give basic details about the series.
It Came! - Value $19.99
My favorite title this month was It Came! It's your classic alien tale told like a classic movie - with intro credits, intermission, and all. I liked the style of the comic itself and felt like the graphic design was nicely done for the tone of the comic. It's also on the lighter side - so you might get some chuckles from it.
From Amazon:
1958. Driving through the British countryside, unthinkingly misogynistic space scientist, Dr. Boy Brett, and his companion, Doris Night, pop into a quaint village pub for a cheese ploughman's...
But waiting for them outside is a most unwelcome visitor: Grurk, an indestructible, monosyllabic robot from outer space, on a mission to harvest the British Blitz spirit for energy!
Pursuing Grurk in their Morris Minor, will Boy and Doris be able to save the British from a life without stiff upper lippedness, or will Her Majesty's Kingdom be forever resigned to a life down in the mouth?
Bubble Gun - Value $12.99
This title is less about robots and more about tech. It's called Bubble Gun because a character literally has a gun that shoots our bubble gum (it's her trial gun). It's mainly about a team of characters that do heists - which is cool - even though it didn't feel like something I'd continue reading.
From Amazon
They like the tech, but live for the high stakes! Sisters Molli and Devyn, along with teammates Roman and Kyo-and a stockpile of cutting edge, cyber-punk technology, form a confident team of mercenary thieves able to take on the most formidable jobs around. Yet, when one cyber heist turns out to be more than they bargained for, as a mysterious package and its contents threaten to unravel the group to its core, the menacing worlds of corrupt industry and deadly espionage is unleashed upon them!
Voltron Year One - Value $19.99
Voltron makes another appearance in subscription boxes this month! Voltron was a favorite as a kid - so I was excited to read a bit about it. It doesn't get more 'robot' than this - multiple robots connecting to make a giant robot - I mean, come on. The story itself left a lot to be desired for me, though - and this whole story is really building up to Voltron, and that may have been why.
From Amazon:
Before Arus. Before Voltron. They were Space Explorer Squadron #686.
Soon, they will be known as the legendary Voltron Force---Keith, Lance, Hunk, Sven, and Pidge---five young men entrusted with five powerful robot lions and the responsibility of defending the universe from unimaginable evil. Now, they are one of many Space Explorers under the command of the Galaxy Alliance, tasked with keeping the Earth safe and the skies clear in a universe growing more and more dangerous every day. They're the best central command has to offer, and have never once failed a mission.
Bacon is a Vegetable, Coffee is a Vitamin - Value $17.99
This was my least favorite title of the bunch. Just by title alone, I thought this collection of webcomics would be up my alley. I tried the first 20 or so panels of comics - unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. Does anyone follow good webcomics? I'd love to get addicted to one of those!
From Amazon:
Bacon. Coffee. Vegetables. Join the Diesel Sweeties for an in-depth examination of how vices are good for you and vegetables are fortified with righteous indignation. This full-color collection is the perfect addition to any meal-instagramming foodie's diet. Delicious, nutritious, and full of wood pulp fiber!
Verdict: This month was only ok for me. I didn't get a title that I really dug into when reading each one, and I always hope to get one or two titles that pique my interest. This month has been an outlier lately, though - the past couple of months have been really good and have had at least 2 comics that I loved, and 1-2 that I became interested in - so I have hope for the August Comic Bento.
