AndyCohen (1)

The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

From Guest Judge Andy Cohen on why he picked this book:

I love a funny lady, so it’s no surprise that I’m an Amy Schumer fan. But after reading The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, my feelings for her are taking a new shape: admiration and respect are two that jump to my mind. The book is breezy with a lot of great stories, but she continually “goes there” in a way that kept catching me off guard, whether it’s about her body image, struggles with her self worth, or incredibly embarrassing (but possibly helpful to impressionable young girls like me) stories about sex and romance.

She also speaks in the language of people who watch Bravo, so that’s a natural plus for me. And, full disclosure, I get a shout out on page 29!

I especially admired her guts in printing former journal entries through the years, annotated with her present-day snark. And I loved each and every one of her sex stories and didn’t even mind that she doesn’t name names. Half the fun is trying to figure out who she’s talking about. (Note to self: I’m worried I name too many names in MY NEW BOOK (hint!), but it’s already gone to printer so I have something new to obsess over late at night.)

My impression of Schumer had always been one of a brash funnylady who took no prisoners and was constantly balls to the walls, but the insecurities she writes about are so funny and relatable that by the end of the book, she becomes less the comic behind the mic and more your friend who you have more in common with than you ever thought.

What do you think of the spoiler book for August? I'm excited!

Gee Andy can promote his book by promoting this book. I would never pick this book but there are fortunately 4 more choices! I always find a book I like!

Amy

I’m not a big fan, she just bugs me for some reason, but depending on what the other selections are I might consider getting this for my mom, who I think would enjoy it.

Darn, I just purchased this book! But, good news is, this is hilarious and so open and honest. I’m loving this book and I know anyone who picks it will be thrilled!

I will not choose this one but I am hopeful the rest of the selections are more up to my speed.

I’m not a big fan of hers, I think she is way overrated. But it’s okay because BOTM always has good selections and every month I end up buying two great books so I’m not too worried.

I am excited about this pick, but already pre-ordered it so I could get an autographed copy. I do not understand the negativity as I LOVE Amy (and Andy Cohen!) and love her humor and what she stands for and that she takes no BS. She completely owns who she is and I respect that 110%. I may select it and give as a gift, but if not I am sure I will find something else I will enjoy also. I love my BOTM subscription and always find at least one (but usually 3!) books that I will enjoy. I have loved every selection, with the exception of “The Night Charter” (liked okay, just not loved), and “The Association of Small Bombs” was interesting and a good book, but not one I will rave about to friends to read. But glad I read it. Some highlights are Siracusa, The Woman in Cabin 10, Ghetto Side, The Girls, Shrill, Sleeping Giants, Dark Matter, Me Without You, Before the Fall, I Let You Go, No One Knows, All Things Cease to Appear, What She Knew and The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto (a lovely book!).

The good news is that there will be four other choices. No book or person or anything will ever be for everyone. I’m not negative about Amy, she’s just not someone I’m particularly interested in.
I always seem to find three other books to buy every month and they still don’t last until the next shipment. I usually have to order other books from B & N so I always have something to grab when I finish one book.
I loved Siracusa more than I thought I would, same with The Woman in Cabin 10 (lost some sleep trying to finish it), Before the Fall was another terrific one. All the rest that you enumerated were good reads for me too.
I enjoy this subscription that a month seems too long to wait. 🙂

I will defiantly NOT be choosing this one lol. Something about her just grates my nerves.

I agree but I always find a book I love each month so I’m not too worried.

I’m not sure how I feel about this one… I don’t know much about Amy.
I just recently watched “Trainwreck” and thought it would be hilarious and that I’d love it… but I just thought it was okay, not nearly as funny as I would have liked. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood when I watched it.

I’m anxious to see what the other choices are for the month. I might get this one… but just not sure yet

I’m not excited about this spoiler. I don’t find her interesting, funny or anyone I would like to know more about. I hope the other four options are better than this.
Disappointed ?

Feeling the same way.

I’ll keep it G-rated, but Amy Schumer is a terrible person with a terrible history of questionable and unacceptable activities and I would never want to support her in any way. Hopefully the other books are better or I’ll be skipping again.

@ Mallory: Yikes. Dislike her all you want, but personal attacks such as this have no place in a public forum.

KarenG and Mallory, I completely agree with you. Glad I cancelled this subscription!

Oh yay!! I love this spoiler, I was already planning on buying this, glad I waited.

I missed last month, and they all looked so good! This spoiler disappoints (I just don’t get Amy, sorry), but I’m excited for the next 4 and the add-ons to pick up what I missed last month.

You can still buy the other books from the August selection, you just have to add them to your September box. The Woman in Cabin 10 and Siracusa were both good reads. Can’t wait to see the other 4 selections for September

Yay!! I am so excited!!!
