Geometric Print Round Towel - Retail Value Listed $88

This isn't branded, so we only have the Happy Rebel insert listed price to go off of, but here is the pricier version that this towel is very similar to.

IMG_2640

This is 100% cotton and it has a nice weight to it - not too thin like some beach towels can be.

I like this inclusion in the box - it seems very appropriate for the summer and the round beach towel trend!

IMG_2631

Annet Weelink Hand-Painted Canvas and Vegan Leather Tote - Retail Value Listed $48 (39.90 EUR shipped to the US)

This tote is great! It's bigger than a standard tote (it measures 15 X 18 inches), and it is made with 100% organic cotton and eco-friendly materials.

The vegan leather base is a great touch too:

And the flip side is plain:

Serei Clothing X Happy Rebel Oversized Black Lace Kimono - Retail Value Listed $48

This is an exclusive piece made for Happy Rebel subscribers. It's great for a swimsuit coverup, and Happy Rebel suggests wearing it as a finishing touch to a music festival ensemble!

There are no care instructions listed on the tag, so I'm assuming it is wash cold, hang dry?

Here it is on to give you a better sense of length:

IMG_2615

My dog Buckles is looking like the Unhappiest Rebel I've ever seen in this picture!

I wasn't sure if it was clear in this picture just how much fabric there is with this kimono, so here is a wingspan picture:

IMG_2616

Lots of lace! And here we are with the tote and beach towel:

IMG_2618

It makes a fun little picnic blanket, too!

On to the last item in the box:

IMG_2635

Silicone Wine Glass Set - Retail Value Listed $18

I love this inclusion in the box! ?? These glasses have a lot of give, so they should be easy to pack too - just don't grip your drink too hard - wine may spill!

IMG_2636

These came individually wrapped in plastic, so there were no instructions for care, but looking at other silicone food safe products, I believe these should be top rack dishwasher safe!

I think they would be great for holding LED tealight candles, too!

Verdict: This box has a retail listed value of about $202. I personally wouldn't pay the retail prices listed for some of these items, but at $25 an item, I think the value of the box is great. Plus every item is substantial - no filler!

What do you think of the Summer Happy Rebel Box? What is your favorite item?

The round towel seems kinda cool, but 5 ft is seriously short for a beach towel. Who wants a beach towel that they can’t lay on? And if something is also in the Pop Sugar box that same month, it hardly seems edgy. That said, I’m watching this box very closely. I feel like it’s going to improve, and it has a stellar chance at being *my* box at some point.

Overall, I’m happier with this box over the last one. The tote is really adorable – and great that it’s vegan. It’s quite special, indeed. Honestly, the glasses are my absolute favorite and perfect for outdoor activities 🙂 The kimono is a great additional. The towel itself I’m a little 50/50 on (the design is nice for me, the printing I am not 100% sure of when examined up close – nothing “wrong per se”- just not perfect but since I don’t work in this industry cant explain). Overall, happy that they are listening to us (especially not including drug store level items). And happy that they have tough skin 🙂 Look forward to the Fall box.

I feel like some people only care about labels or brands rather that cultivating a personal style. granted, some brands you may like because you grow to know they mean quality, but I believe most of the reviewers on this site are pretty honest & reliable when they describe quality & expectations of such. I like what I like even if it doesn’t have a designer tag. besides, even great designers get it wrong from time to time.

regarding the edginess debate, perhaps they need a better descriptive term. anything truly edgy wouldn’t work well in a subcription service because there needs to be some mass appeal aspect. anything truly edgy really tends to irk most people. btw, I’m 45. I consider myself fairly edgy. I don’t look to boxes to help me with that aspect of my style. if anything, sub boxes have helped me try some more mainstream trendy items that I likely wouldn’t have tried on my own. if I want edgy, I’ll hit a thift store where I find more unique items that one finds at all the malls.

I have liked both boxes so far, and I have been very tempted. I have yet to completely give in because of the price tag. I’m still watching tho…

I think that more than caring about brand names and labels consumers have grown wary of cheap “made in China” crap being passed as quality goods. At least a label gives you some insight into the company and who you are supporting. As for reviewers and bloggers being honest…I like to believe that they are truthful but I’m sure that the lure of free products and other monetary incentives can be very persuasive.

This looks like a great box, sorry I missed it. All the items are useable and go together, great curation!

Wisteria

I am on the same wavelength as other reviewers. Unbranded items in curated quarterly boxes don’t appeal to me. I can go to eBay or Etsy and have items made for me, like the kimono and blanket included, for a relatively small price. I want a box like this filled with coveted Brand names, but discounted. I’ve never heard of the only branded item, Annet Weelink. I’ll just keep my opinion of the blatant knock off beach towel to myself, other than to say a 5′ towel is pretty short.

Whether they’re last season’s overstock, or a brand new trend, I can find quality brand name items at a discount at Gilt, etc. various beauty sites for skin care & makeup, or brand specific Sample sales. That means for longevity, there should be an immediate allure to these boxes, which is typically found in either the name behind the label, such as the Rachel Zoe box, and/or the fabulous brands in the box, all deeply discounted such as FFF or Popsugar.

I’m 49 and still don’t see anything edgy or even interesting. I would say these items are either too young, as in I don’t need safety glasses to drink alcohol, or too old as in the tote and a kimono that may bleed. (I’m more of a Winter Kate kimono fan.)

I’m certainly not writing to simply find fault, but to offer my honest opinion as food for thought. Also, if I look at this another way, my expectations may be too high for this particular box. Maybe this is a box for people who like the sub idea and like to be surprised more than anything. Maybe those people don’t really care if it’s modern and edgy, or if almost everything is a knockoff. Either way, you had a sell out from what I’ve read, so that’s a good start. Good luck next Q.

I agree with Wisteria completely. I also don’t believe that all these rave comments are coming from consumers. I found the exact same design on a wholesale website and tried to post my findings on this thread and surprise surprise, it was not posted, even though my previous comments on this thread were. If Happy Rebel Box has decided to make their own towel, with the same design from a cheap, wholesale product made of 100% cotton and shipped from China, why has it been such a secret and why is it $88?

Here we go again with another attempt to get a comment posted that questions the validity of a subscription box.

AmyM

I can assure you, I’m a real consumer. I paid $100 and received the box and offered my honest assessment. I happen to really like all the items. Why is that so hard to believe?

AmyM

Just to offer a different perspective as someone of a similar age (I’m 48), I think there is value to this box beyond the items included. Their customer service has been outstanding. After subscribing, I immediately received an email asking if I wanted the spring or the summer box, which was a nice courtesy. Additionally, in my package was a handwritten note from the founder, thanking me and welcoming me. That’s worth something in the increasingly rude and impersonal world in which we find ourselves. As for the items themselves, they’re all beautiful. I don’t need a brand name to convince me something is quality; I can see and feel that on my own.

madge

I 100% agree regarding the “exclusives” in other boxes being cheaper pieces. But cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean less quality. Removing a logo or a pocket does decrease cost but does it decrease quality? My guess is it means different things to different people. I do disagree that knock-offs and black lace that might crock are quality items. However, in today’s world of fast fashion and bargain basement shopping I can see how these things might still be appealing to certain demographics.

Randi

I completely agree – its sad that we’re to the point in today’s world where a simple handwritten note can mean so much, but for me it truly does. Its the little things like that that add value to me (and I’m 33).
This box isn’t my style, but I do think they’ve included some great items so far. I’m very impressed and would definitely sub if it was my style. I look forward to seeing the spoilers and reading the reviews because I think they’re off to a great start so far and wish them the best in the future!

There’s also been plenty of “branded items” items in some of the bigger/more well known sub boxes that are “exclusives”… which actually ends up translating to a cheaper, less quality piece. So for me personally, I’d rather have a quality non-branded item over a cheaper branded item any day.

meg

well said. my thoughts exactly.

I LOVE that you’re adding photos to your reviews now Liz. You look great and it’s super helpful to see items on. Thank you for being brave enough to add photos! I love the ones with Buckles too-such a cute dog!

@HappyRebelBox

A quick note regarding the care instructions for the kimono… everyone should have had a little pink and blue insert card in their kimono package. It recommends to hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. It also warns that dye may rub off on clothing! Hope that helps.

Amy

I wish I had bought this box. I love everything in it. Thanks for sharing photos! They really help show how the items look in real life. I love that black lace!

Reply ButtonReply

Flubs

Aside from the black lace, I’m still waiting for the “edgy” aspect this sub promised lol.

In the 1st shot I think Buckles is still worried a matching pup kimono might come out at any moment. ?

Your family is adorable Liz. Great review, too. The kimono views are a nice helpful touch.

Tamara

I suspect that kimono will become a unicorn.

I’m seriously curious about how the round towels in HR, FFF (add-on), and the PSMH Summer LE compare – in size, thickness, touch, and overall quality.

I REALLY like the style of this box but the lack of labels leaves me concerned about the products’ quality. I’m very interested in hearing people’s opinions.

Liz Cadman

I’ve had no issues with the quality of non-branded items from this box yet, so hopefully that trend continues. It is my first round towel, though, so I’ll be curious to see how it stacks up to the POPSUGAR one. (Comparing it to regular towels, it’s great!;) )

Daisy

Hi Liz! Can you comment on the quality of this towel vs the quality of the one in PSMH? I LOVE the towel from PS but would be disappointed in anything less.

neha

Amazing! Liz you look stunning as always. I want the kimono in my life.

I think this box keeps getting better and better. I got too many boxes this summer but think I’m going to try for the fall box. I would love to see some edgy jewelry added to the collection. Good job Happy Rebel on a great box.
Liz glad to see you’re getting more comfortable showing yourself in your reviews as of course you are gorgeous in your pictures. Can’t wait to see if you decide on being a red head anytime soon.

I love that you are in pictures now! That kimono looks fantastic on you!!! 😀

Liz, How large is the towel? It looked pretty darn big in the spoiler but with you sitting on it with Buckles it seems a bit smaller. I just got one of the round towels from FFF and it is 6 feet in diameter….just wondering for comparison in case I want to try to swap for this one. lol

I was torn between this box, the aididas and the popsugar summer LE, as it turns out I missed them all. lol My credit card thanks me but I feel so left out LOL

Reply ButtonReply

@HappyRebelBox

Hi Carey, our towel is about 5 feet in diameter. Hope this helps!

Chels

Happy Rebel Box,

Who made the towel?

Thanks

meg

I’m pretty sure I would end up looking like Mrs. Hannigan in that Kimono but you are totally pulling off. I also feel weird about them providing such a blatant knockoff of the beach people towel (it’s not the exact design but SO insanely close). Why couldn’t they make a cool black/white towel with an original design? Turns out I’m happy that I chose PSMH instead of HR as trendy rebel just isn’t my style but I’m glad that so many people are happy with the box.

Charlie

Happy Rebel Box, why are there no brand names included for any of the items? Seems a bit odd a brand new box would not want us to know where they came from and rely on trust that the retail value is that high. This box is not my style, but I loved the first one. Like other MSA readers, I’m also waiting for value to go up or price to go down. Loving the theme idea.

Reply ButtonReply

@HappyRebelBox

Hi Charlie! We had a hard time finding a towel that was a good fit for our members and met our budget and quality standards, so we had our own made. We set our own price that we thought was fair, and we sold out of it. We were happy to see it was such a hit! Getting sponsored by large brands is a perk of being a huge subscription box company with thousands of subscribers. As a small business, our top priority is delivering beautiful, high-quality, and useful items in a style we think our members will enjoy, regardless of brand. We have (and will continue) to include well known brands when possible, while also striving to showcase up and coming designers as well. Thanks for your feedback!

I know, right? And Buckles gets even more adorable in each pic too.

I jumped on this when I saw the kimono spoiler and I’m so glad I did. I’ve been getting sub boxes for almost two years now and it is easily one of my all-time favorite items from a box. Since I won’t be near a beach anytime soon, I am using the towel as a throw over the back of my love seat and it looks really cute. I know I’ll get tons of use out of the bag and the glasses are fun and not something you see every day. If they’re doing this well on only their second box, I have high hopes for the future. btw, I visited the Etsy shop of the woman who made the kimono and she has lots of gorgeous things. I ordered another one; couldn’t resist.

Krista

Anyone wants to get rid of their box, I’ll buy it from you and pay for shipping 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Janet

I really like this season’s box! Unfortunately I missed it…it’s now sold out. 🙁 That being said… I’m not willing to jump in blind to purchase a $100 box sight unseen for a brand new subscription service (this is only box #2, I think?). Not sure if there were spoilers that I missed, or if there weren’t spoilers? Anyways…it’s not like I really ~need~ any of the items, and I have a similar towel on its way to me in the Popsugar Summer LE box. So…considering I just signed up for yet another subscription box today (LookFantastic), bringing my total to some ridiculously high number, I guess I should probably be happy that this is sold out…because if it were available, I know I would have jumped! By the way, Liz, the kimono is super cute on you, and you’re right…Buckles did NOT look like a happy rebel in that one picture! 😉

Reply ButtonReply

Krista

The first spoiler was the towel and the second the kimono. It sold out very quickly after the kimono spoiler was posted.

Reply ButtonReply

Janet

Not sure how I missed the spoilers! I’ll have to make sure I get “on the radar” for this box so I don’t miss out next time. ?
