May’s theme is “Southern Breakfast,” and I’m really sorry that I’m only getting the review to you guys now. (I didn’t receive this box until the very end of June!) I found a few posts online that show people receiving this box on time, so I’m not sure if I’m alone in experiencing delays or not. (I haven’t really seen comments in past reviews or the forum to indicate that it’s a widespread problem.) Hopefully it’s just me, but if anyone else did experience delays with this box, please share your experience in the comments section below!
Hamptons Lane includes a booklet that details all of the items included in the box.
The booklet also provides recipes and cooking tips.
Nora Mill White Grits (1 lb).)- $4.75
Grits are one of the first things that come to mind when I think of southern breakfast, so I’m very pleased to see them included in this box. Nora Mill Granary grinds their grits using French burr millstones, which helps give them “old fashioned flavor.” The grits are made using whole grain corn to ensure they’re as nutritious and flavorful as can be. I don’t think I’ve ever made grits myself before, and I can not wait to give it a shot.
Shrimp & Grits is one of my favorite brunch dishes, so I think I’m going to make Hamptons Lane’s recipe for Shrimp & Cheddar Cheese Chive grits very soon!
Hamptons Lane Southern Style Buttermilk Biscuit Mix (16 oz.)- $8?
This item is a Hamptons Lane exclusive, so I’ve taken the price from their website. To make biscuits using this mix, you only need to combine the bag of biscuit mix with one cup of water. That’s it! Now, I’m not usually one to knock a recipe before I’ve tried it, but I simply can not fathom making biscuits without cutting in a mess of cold cubed butter. I’ll certainly give this mix a spin, but I’m a little skeptical. I like my biscuits buttery!
Sallie's Greatest Blueberry Lavender Jam (9.5 oz.)- $10
I’m a big fan of both blueberries and lavender, so this jam was made for me! The flavors meld together beautifully, and I have a feeling that this jar won’t last long in my kitchen. For anyone who might not enjoy lavender as much as I do, I’m happy to report that the flavor is pretty subtle. It definitely doesn’t have that “perfumey” flavor sometimes found in floral products.
Adams Apple Butter (9 oz.)- $11
I LOVE apple butter, and I try and make it myself at least once every apple season. Adams Apple Butter is almost as good as mine (I’m so humble, lol), and it’s made with a delicious mix of spices.
Fox Run Biscuit Cutters- $2.99
Biscuit cutters are something I use all the time for lot of different tasks, and I was really excited to get my hands on these. Unfortunately, they’re not very sturdy and don’t feel like they’ll hold up very well. (Mine actually arrived bent, and I’m afraid if I bend them back into shape they might snap.)
In case anyone is looking for better quality cutters, I highly recommend this 12 piece Ateco set. I use them in my professional kitchen and at home. They hold up well to regular use, come in lots of fun sizes, and have their own storage case.
Norpro Bacon Press- $14.23
Let me be completely honest: before this box was announced, I had no idea that bacon presses were a thing.
Sure, I always noticed that my bacon at home was curled and frilly and that restaurant bacon was flat, but I just never put two and two together!
I really like this press. The design is fun, and it feels really well made.
It doesn’t fit in with the modern aesthetic I have going in my kitchen, but it’s so cute I really don’t care!
Verdict: I think the items included in this box all fit perfectly with the “Southern Breakfast” theme. The blueberry jam and apple butter are both fantastic, and the bacon press is a great, heirloom quality item. I wish the biscuit cutters were better made, but I still think they’re a nice pick considering the theme. By my count, the retail value of the items in this box totals about $51. That’s not as high as some of Hamptons Lane’s previous boxes, but it still comes in over the cost of the box. I do have to admit that I’m a little concerned that my May box didn’t arrive until the end of June. Searching around online, it appears that at least some subscribers received this box on schedule, so I hope that the shipping delays I experienced aren’t being shared by others.
