Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs.  Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size.  Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds).  This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 84 pounds).

Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

There was an information card listing the items in the box as well as a notice that Surprise My Pet is exploring different packaging options, hence the different box this month.  I kind of didn’t like the boxes from earlier months (they were confusing to open) so I hope they choose something a little different for the future.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-frisbee

Pet Qwerks Doggie Disk – Value $6.75

Nyx can’t chase toys outside due to her knee injuries, but we have played with this in the house a bit.  In general, a frisbee is a good toy for a lot of dogs, and it’s size appropriate.  And yes, that is Mr. Kitty’s tail you see in the corner.  This was a little hard to find online; I think it may be a closeout item.  But, with a toy, that doesn’t really matter as long as it’s still in good shape.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-smalltreats

Pawtree Pawtreats (free sample)

We got these last month, too.  This company offers customized nutrition plans for your dog’s needs, which is nice.  I think Nyx is beyond help and has to stick to her canned prescription food (4 cans per day at $3.50 per can!), but I know some people who would find this service useful.

Beach BBQ Bites in Chicken (0.5 oz) – Value $4 (?)

Beach BBQ Bites in Beef (0.5 oz) – Value $4 (?)

These are all-natural jerky treats for dogs.  They’re made in the USA and they are free of preservatives, coloring, and salt.  Unfortunately, they seem to only be sold at shows and in local stores on the West Coast, so I don’t have good pricing information.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-squirrel

FFDPet Dura Tails Fox – Value $14.99

I thought this was a squirrel at first but apparently it is a fox.  Nyx loved it although it was not durable.  The tail came off first and then she ripped off the head.  This one lasted under two minutes.  But it might work for less destructive dogs.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-treats

Fro-Yo to Go in Bacon Flavor with Real Yogurt (2 oz) – Value $10.99

This is mostly a dairy based treat; it says “natural bacon flavor” but that doesn’t even have to mean real bacon.  But, what I like about these is they really are freeze-dried yogurt so they have a lot of probiotic bacterial strains in them.  If you want your dog to have the benefit of probiotics but don’t want to give pills, this could be a good option.

Incredibubbles Peanut Butter Flavor – Value $4.99

Nyx doesn’t understand bubbles.  But, this will be perfect for Mr. Kitty.  He is the BUBBLE SLAYER.  Not a single bubble gets past him.  His eyes are better now so I think he should do well with these.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-literature

There was also some product literature this month.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-hellofresh

And the obligatory discount off Hello Fresh.  I don’t know if it is just me, but sending out this many discounts in this many subscription boxes kind of cheapens the idea of Hello Fresh for me.  There is such a thing as too much exposure…

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-nyxtug

Nyx really wanted to play tug with this toy.

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-toytail

Unfortunately, this was the result…(only took 30 seconds).

surprisemypetdog-may-2016-nyx2

Nyx was just as happy to chew on the body.  Until she removed the head.  Then it took me to hold her jaws open and my husband to stick his hand halfway down her throat to keep her from swallowing it.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $45.72 for the May 2016 Surprise My Pet dog subscription box.  That is a really good value for a $25 dog box, and most of the products were still in production by their manufacturers.  I think every single thing was new to me (with the exception of the Pawtree sample we got last month), and I discovered a new small producer of dog jerky (albeit one that would be hard to find in my area).  I do wish the fox toy had been more durable, but this is not specifically a heavy chewer box and it may still work for some dogs.

My first box was from a Groupon and I never wanted a second box. The only box I ordered came and the treats were pure junk and I threw them away. The toys were ok but even the Groupon price was more than they were worth. I automatically was charged and mailed a second surprise my pet box. The contents were horrible. Really flash cards for a dog??? All the treats are made with horrible ingredients that I would never feed my dog. Don’t waste your money on this horrible product. Oh and buy the way the company has a no return policy. I wonder why? They know their products stink???

I payed and received the same box. I have a Medium/Small dog though and received the exact same products. I indicated on my profile that my dog was a tough chewer and when we received the fox she not only ripped of its tail but it also got broken down into very swallow-able pieces that I then had to snatch away! I was very unhappy.

PawTree is the biggest load of overpriced multi-level marketing crap.

They don’t even display what their food sizes are! How many pounds am I getting with a ‘Large’ size bag? Unless I’m missing something, I couldn’t find that anywhere on the site. I feel like it should be on the product page, why is this not upfront and easy to find? Frustrating! That’s when I started digging deeper into this company. Anyway, after Google searching I found a 2014 catalog which displayed their large as 20.6lbs shipped as two 10.3lb bags… for 79.99. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE. You can have your dog’s picture and name printed on the bags! They currently have a variety of ‘Large’ sizes ranging from 49.99-69.99, but nowhere can I find the sizes of these current products… I don’t appreciate that this info isn’t upfront. The ingredients of the food isn’t even on the product page. Why!?

In no way am I saying the food products being offered are junk, but, you could save yourself some money by not buying into this marketing hype. They are not offering anything new, but simply offering it to you in a different way.

Anyone can pay into this to sell PawTree products, anyone. Consult your pets vet first. Their holistic Vet Advisory Council is making bank off of this multi-level marketing. /rant

ah, okay. I went into a rage fueled frustration. The info I was looking for can be found at the bottom of the the product description. A link ‘Learn more’. It was under the bit about the pet’s picture so I assumed it was more about that.

Still, over priced and still two 10.3lb bags for ‘Large’.

use caution with those bubbles, they leave a filmy, sticky “bubble skin” that will be hard to get off carpeted surfaces.
