The box came with this information card.  This month’s theme is “candy shop.”

Here’s a look at the custom paper for this month.  It’s cute, but it makes me think of Christmas.

Pawbreakers Catnip Ball – Value $5

This was the biggest hit of the box.  Mr. Kitty and Monkey were especially fond of it.  Monkey kept licking it and, as a result, also kept pushing it across the floor.  Mr. Kitty took the “bite it” approach instead.  Also, this was made with organic catnip.

Note: The catnip in the baggie goes with an item in the next photo.

Cat ‘n Around Imperial Cat Ice Cream Cone Catnip Toy – Value $5.99

The catnip went with this, a refillable catnip toy.  My cats are not super into the refillable toys, but they did think the catnip was pretty good.

Authority Dental Cat Treats in Salmon (3 oz) – Value $2.99

These were a hit.  I liked listening to the sound of my cats crunching on them.  So maybe they really do help the teeth?  I’ve seen this brand around in stores but had never actually tried anything from them before, so that’s nice.

Pet Candy Nips – Value $3.95

Pet Candy Candy Shoppe Stix – Value $4.25

Toys from Pet Candy are always hits with my guys.  I removed the black strings from around the Pet Candy stix toy – seems like something a determined cat could remove and swallow.  So I removed the black strings from the ends, just to be on the safe side.

Cat photo time!!

Mr. Kitty with the catnip ball.  I love this picture!

Sneaky investigates the box.

Sneaky actually takes a treat from my hand!

Madison and Sneaky rush to see who can get the most treats.

Madison decides to cut Sneaky off from the source of treats.

Now he is fat and full and lets me pile stuff of him!

Here are a few shots of Monkey “helping” me unbox this subscription!

And here is Monkey with the catnip ball.  He licked it for a long time.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $22.18 for the May Pet GiftBox for cats.  That is better than last month by a few dollars but still lower than I’d like to see, considering the subscription price.  The toys were mostly popular with my crew, though, and Sneaky, Monkey, and Madison all ate the treats (Mr. Kitty can’t have them), so I was basically happy, though I’d like to see maybe one additional item in future boxes.

What do you think of the May Pet GiftBox?  Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?

  1. I’ve been subscribed to this box for well over a year, and managed to luck into a 17.99 per month deal in perpetuity, so I’ve kept it, even though I keep saying I’m going to cancel one of these days. The monthly themes are hilarious (Caturday Night Fever was a favorite), but it seems as though the quality has gone down recently. They also changed the billing date (moved it from the 25th of the previous month to the 1st of the shipping month) without telling me. I need to get over my fomo and just cancel already.

  2. Still not a deal. Ragan, why are you OK with getting less than you paid for? I’ve been reading your cat box reviews for months. I have only ever seen ONE that met or exceeded the purchase price.

    • I actually didn’t say I was OK with the value, I noted that it was less than the cost of the subscription and that I would like to see additional items in future boxes. (The items that were chosen were good, I just wanted there to be more of them.)

This box in particular was sent to us for review (noted at the beginning of the review). Several of the cat boxes are.

Anyway, I review what I get, including looking up prices independently of what is listed on any information card that may be provided. That way, if one reader decides to compare cat subscriptions, he or she can see examples of several months for each (since some people find MSA by Googling box names and not just by reading the site every day) and make an informed decision. Sometimes a box will have an “off” month and otherwise be OK. Sometimes a box will have consistently low values. You just can’t know that in advance until you go through a few months. I think of myself as doing that part for other people, so they don’t have to.
