This month's hobby was needle felting! This is the only paper that was included. Their instructions and video tutorials are online. I found them to be pretty good this time, and I liked that they gave lots of options and ideas for the project.
These are all the supplies that were included for the project. The basic project they showed on their website was needle felting a mushroom. I thought that was kind of boring, and I didn't think any of these colors would make a good mushroom, honestly. They also had instructions on how to make BB-8 and a minion, but they did not include all the supplies to make either of those. I was particularly bummed about BB-8 because their website said, "You have everything you need to make this," but they didn't include dark grey felt or pipe cleaners, both of thich would have been required to make BB-8.
My eight-year-old son is always asking me to buy him stuffed animals of his favorite video game characters, and they rarely ever have the plush figures he wants for sale anywhere. He likes the more obscure characters. In any case, I asked him if there was something I could make him using these colors. He instantly thought of Yoshi from Yoshi's Wooly World. Yoshi is green, but there's also a red version of him (seen here), so we went with red Yoshi.
Here's my completed Yoshi! I'm actually really proud of him! Needle felting is fun, too! My son was thrilled with how good he came out!
Just FYI, New Hobby Box is not just a crafting subscription. This month's hobby was a craft, but if you look at their past boxes in What to Expect, you will see that they have a variety of skills you might be taking up in a given month.
Verdict: I really enjoyed needle felting, and I think my Yoshi turned out super! I have loads of leftover felt so I can make lots more critters before I will run out. I really enjoyed New Hobby Box! I think it's an amazing concept, but they do a need a little work on the execution. When I went to their website last month, they had the spoiler up (needle felting), but they had a bunch of needle felted Star Wars characters on display. I assumed this box would come with the materials and instructions on how to make Star Wars characters, which I was really excited about. They didn't include the right colors for any Star Wars characters. They did include a tutorial on how to make BB-8, but without the right supplies, that wasn't very helpful. I wound up using a video tutorial on how to make Yoshi, so really, I didn't even use NHB's instructions. None of this is a huge deal, but I would like to see NHB tighten up their offerring in the next few months. Otherwise, this was a great experience for me.
Spoiler Alert: Next month's hobby is indoor gardening!
