The Subscription Box: Comic Bento

The Cost: $25 ($17.50 + s/h)

The Products: A surprise selection of graphic novels with at least $60 worth of comics

Ships to: US and Canada

Good To Know: I'm calculating value for each novel based on their sticker value and not from online websites like Amazon.

The box included a card with some information about each selection this month. This month was their very first publisher spotlight and focused solely on Dynamite Entertainment novels.

The packing was great too. The graphic novels were packaged in plastic wrap, and the entire thing was stuffed with bubble wrap to protect the edges of the hardcover and softcover graphic novels.

New Vampirella Volume 1 - Value $24.99

I'm not into vampires at all so this is a bit of a miss for me personally. It does get pretty good reviews online, and I'll probably give a shot. The volume collects Vampirella Vol. 2 issues 1-6.

Complete Dracula - Value 24.99

Again, not into vampires, so I was pretty bummed when the second graphic novel was vampire-based again! This one is a hardcover volume - I think it's great that they included a hardcover volume, I definitely tend to prefer hardcover. This one gets great reviews and the artwork looks pretty cool. Just flipping through it, it seemed to visually have a Hellboy feel to it, which is a good sign for me!

Fear Nothing - Dean Koontz - Value $14.99

I'm not a big Dean Koontz fan, and I wasn't thrilled by the artwork in this volume. That being said, I know he's a popular author and it may translate to the graphic novel. I'm a massive Stephen King fan, and his Dark Tower series is absolutely awesome as a graphic novel! Lets hope this is the same.

comic-bento-august-2015-grimm

Grimm Vol 1 - Value $19.99

This is, yet again, another show/book/theme that I don't follow. I definitely like it visually, so I'll have to give this one a shot.

VERDICT: While this box didn't personally suit me - it definitely checks off a bunch of check boxes for a great subscription box! I love discovering through comic boxes, so these titles will definitely force me outside of my comfort zone - and that's probably a good thing. Not only that, I'll have an entire volume if I like it! That's exciting! On top of the that, the value is excellent - this comes in around an $85 value - you really can't beat that! While I didn't get excited for these titles, what did excite me was the premise of this box - and I'm eager to get my second shipment next month.

What did you think of Comic Bento? Are there comics here that you'd recommend? I'll need a place to start!

I did Comic Bento for two months about a year ago. I thought the first box (Feminine Mystique) was great, and I liked 3/4 things that came in it. The second box (Espionage) only had 2 good books in my opinion, and the other 2 were awful.

I agree with what Ryan said: the stuff they send you are clearly things publishers are just trying to get rid of (as I can tell from looking at later boxes). I’m glad they at least include Valiant comics now and then, as those are always amazing, but the Dynamite stuff is ALWAYS utter garbage.

I was on the fence because I love this type of thing but after hearing the serious problems with customer service and the fact that it looks like old news rather than fresh stuff, I think I will pass on this one.

I’m so far over Comic Bento. Their customer service is terrible, and the comics they send you are the garbage issues that publishers are unable to move. The issues list price is high, but it’s not worth that price as no one wants these issues.

I canceled my subscription 3 months ago, and out of nowhere they charged me this month. When I contacted them, they refused to refund my payment because I didn’t show proof that I canceled this month, even though my cancelation went through the previous two months. I’ve talked to multiple others who this has happened to as well. So word of advice, if you decide to purchase and then cancel, remove your billing info.

Similar thing happened to me. They requested I prove that I canceled, I showed them the email, and I communication cut off there. I wouldn’t of minded if the comics were better, but they have yet to include a single quality issue. It’s always junk.

I love Comic Bento. I do agree though that it can be hit or miss for me, but the value is definitely there. 4 trades for $25! I’ve also had good luck swapping them.

It also helps me find stuff I didn’t know about like Ken Smith’s Green Hornet the other month.
