Beauty Box 5
3.3 overall rating
204 Ratings | 52 Reviews

Beauty Box 5 is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It’s also one of the cheapest beauty subscription boxes – only $8.25 a month with an annual subscription. They tend to feature drugstore brands, and usually the product sizes are deluxe or sample size. (Sometimes they still send out the dreaded foil packets though).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Beauty Box 5 Review – August 2015 File

Donnamax Printed Nail File with Case - Value Listed $5

Jerome Alexander Hot Stuff Go Pop Compact - Value Listed $10.99

I never thought of a nail file needing a case before, but then I learned that one of my friends absolutely hates the feel of accidently touching an emery board, so this is going to her!

Beauty Box 5 Review – August 2015 Open

While I love getting a palette in a subscription box, I'm not thrilled about this one. For one thing, it looks like it should be sold in packaging, so I'm a little concerned that it wasn't sealed in any way. Not that the makeup looks used, but I prefer my full-sized makeup items to come with packaging/ingredients lists when possible.

The upside of researching this compact is the discovery of this pretty amusing ad for the compact.

Beauty Box 5 Review – August 2015 Argan

Hask Beauty Argan Oil from Morocco Deep Conditioning Treatment - 1.75 oz Value $2.99

I've sampled this brand before and I like their products and the scents, so I'm looking forward to trying this deep conditioning treatment.

Pur-Lisse Hydra Balance Moisturizer - .5 oz Value $16

(Good to know for swaps - foil sealed)

Not an exciting item (pur-lisse has been overdone in subscription boxes in my opinion), but a very useful one. The formula is light and absorbs quickly - a perfect summer moisturizer for me.

Beauty Box 5 Review – August 2015 Starlooks

Starlooks Luxe Longwear Eyeliner Pen in Plum - FULL SIZE! Value $19

This eyeliner went on so smoothly and it's a subtle wearable purple shade for me. Swatched below:

Beauty Box 5 Review – August 2015 Swatch

Verdict: This box has a value of about $54. That's really good for a Beauty Box 5 box. I'm happy with the sizes of the items too. I'm still skeptical about the palette, but everything else will be used.

Oh, that sucks! I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to me, too. I only subscribed this month for those two items.

LOL. That commercial is ridiculous.

This was my last box, and I think it was a good send off. I got stuff I like, plus some things to remind me not to resub, lol! I got my first purlisse item after two years of subbing, and I like it a lot. The eyeliner was less purple and more red, so I’m saving that for my sister’s Christmas gift. The nail file and case are my favorite item. I always end up throwing away files before I really use them up because they get all gross in my bag, so a case is a great idea. Plus I love the comic book design. The palette thing is reminiscent of third grade, in quality and colors. But you can remove the palette, and you’ve got a really cute coin purse/wallet! The oil mask thing was a godsend.

This sub box has some fun and unique items, but it’s not worth 12 a month. It’s not worth 80 a year. For every quality item there are three junk items, and I wouldn’t suggest this box to anyone. Also cancelling was hell. It took ten emails and three phone calls to actually cancel my sub.

Hey Hot Stuff, 1986 called. It wants it’s commercial back ???

There’s a coupon for half off a new subscription: HALFOFF I just used it today and it worked (took $6 off). 🙂

I would use everything in this box including the palette. I just don’t ever pay for a year up front and at 12.00 for the month to month rate that makes this box more than Ipsy and Birchbox. If they could lower their price by a couple dollars I would try it.

I get charged for this box every three months, it makes it 10 a box, the same as Ipsy and Birchbox. I’ve had all three and l think it is better than Birchbox, Ipsy will always be my favorite, though. 🙂

Great review, I like the product colors you got. I actually really liked my box! I needed a new nail file so that was good, I have purple hair so a deep conditioner is always needed, I got the keratin one. I’ve never used pur-lisse but I ran out of my normal moisturizer so hopefully ill like it. My compact is orange and has pink and orange eye shadow, which weirdly I’ve been wanting to add to my collection for my blue eyes. The compact thankfully pops out so I can give the plastic coin purse part to my daughter. Oh and love the starlooks pen! Alot of people hate on that brand but I really really like it, they have a sub box I’ve been thinking about buying. All in all this is the best BB5 box I’ve gotten, not sure if ifs enough to keep me subbed though.

Haha! That commercial was funny. I thought it looked like something I would find in Claire’s. It’d be nice for a 12 year old. Yes, Pur-Lisse is overdone in sub boxes. I’m tired of it too. Thanks for sharing your box. 🙂

I got the same eyeliner in black in this month’s Ipsy bag. I researched it, and it’s basically a generic Chinese eyeliner branded for different small retailers. It last appeared on Ipsy last year under the brand Skone Cosmetics. In my blog review of the Ipsy bag (click on my name to read it), I listed some of the companies that sell it under their own brands. It’s out of stock at the place with the lowest price, but you can find it for $12 at several other brands.

If you invest the time you can probably find it in Ali Express for less than $1 per eye liner, probably not worth the time unless you want to order a lot.

The eyeshadow looks like something geared toward Tweens/teens and the ad certainly confirmed that. I wish makeup would have come in such a fun container when I was a teen. Now I like something more adult/sophisticated. I don’t get this box. Already have too many. If I did the eyeshadow would be gifted to a young lady who would appreciate it more than me. And that’s fun.

That compact is straight out of the 90’s. And I would have loved it back then. You know, when I was 10.

This is a great box for a pre-teen & early aged teen. In turn, it’s a ridiculous box for probably 95% of the actual subscribers. The eyeliner & the hair treatment are the only 2 items of worth.

One of the most hilarious things about subscription boxes is the constant sending of no name brands with inflated prices. $19 eyeliner? LOL no thanks, I’d rather go for Stila or Kat Von D at that price.

And the Purlisse item is probably from the left over, unshipped, Summer 2014 sub box surplus – virtually worth nothing at this point.

I really want to buy that eyeliner, I’ve been searching for a matte plum shade for years with no success. Does the tube have an agitater when you shake the pen?

Lyndsey

Yes the palette seemed like it is something for children and sold at the dollar store! I would have been ok with a single shadow or quad in replace of that! But I am happy with everything else.

mimi

Yeah, the palette’s a little . . . off. The colors themselves aren’t bad, but between the fact it isn’t wrapped and the bright-colored plastic case, it’s just not adult (?). I like the rest of the stuff, though. I have green eyes, so purple eyeliner is my go-to color.

The commercial makes me feel old! I will give this one to my little girl! I resubscribed a couple of weeks ago, just for the eyeliner. I’m glad to know that it is a good one.
