Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - box

Gwynnie Bee is a clothing rental subscription service for women sizes 10-32. I have been intrigued with their concept for a while because I think plus-sized clothing is sorely underrepresented in the subscription box market. I have been really happy to have an opportunity to try them out!

Gwynnie Bee kindly invited me to try their service for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This review is of the 3 items at a time subscription from 6/21 through 7/20. This month I decided to see what how much of a difference it would make if I did not notify them that an item was being returned. I just sent them back and let them send me a new one when they received the old one.

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - jacket

IGIGI - Louise Jacket in Floral Print

This jacket is really beautiful and the vivid floral print is so summery. It's also really well made! My only complaint is that it was just too hot to wear for more than a few minutes. It's true that we have air conditioning everywhere in the south this time of year, but not enough to warrant this jacket. I think when I closeted it I thought it would be more lightweight.

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - kaleidoscope

ELIZA J - Shift Dress In Kaleidoscope Print

I really liked the print of this dress, and the length was absolutely perfect! It was a bit too heavy for summer, though. Also I love shift dresses on myself, but for some reason this one looked a little like a sack on me.

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - ruched

TRISTE - Cyan Confetti Ruched Dress

This dress, on the other hand, was a complete knock-out! I sized up as GB suggested, and it fit like a glove. The color is actually more vibrant than pictured here. I thought when I put it on it was a little too body-con for my size, but I got tons of compliments on it! I might actually re-closet it!

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - striped
ELIZA J - Multi Striped Shift Dress

This is the exact same dress as the shift dress above except in a different pattern, so I got the same results with this dress. The good news is that my husband really likes it when I dress colorfully.

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - tank

JETE - Floral Remix Tank Dress

This is the most comfortable thing I've worn all summer! It's unlined yet not sheer at all, the arm holes are just the right size to wear a standard bra but not reveal it, and it's nice and swingy without looking dumpy. Perfect! Plus I love the pattern.

Gwynnie Bee Review + Free Month Coupon – July 2015 - wrap

SPRUCE & SAGE - Sketch Scarf V-Neck Dress

I usually love wrap dresses and faux wrap dresses, and they are usually really flattering on me, but this one just wasn't. I was excited about this print, but it wasn't enough to make up for the weird fit. It had an elastic empire waist, which was strange, and then it had way too much fabric at the bust. I just kept fidgeting with it all day.

The Verdict: I really don't blame Gwynnie Bee for anything that went wrong this month. Gwynnie Bee always sends quality garments in pristine condition! Sometimes I just want to try a different style to see how it looks and, let's face it, no one looks good in everything. Also, it's July and almost everything is too hot to wear! I did find some great things this month anyway, and I still highly recommend this service to any plus-size woman who likes to change up her wardrobe often.

Regarding this month's experiment in which I didn't notify GB online that I was returning items, it made huge difference! I only received about half as many items as usual in this time frame! So, lesson learned, make sure you notify them online when you are returning an item!

What do you think of Gwynnie Bee?

I’ve been using GB for about 2.5 months now, and have a bit of a love/hate thing going on. I found pieces that I love wearing, love enough to buy, but have found I can but them new online cheaper than I can for the discounted GB price for used garments. Plus, those prices keep going up. I was debating purchaing an Anna Scholz I had at home for over a month, and the price went up over $30 in a week! Meanwhile, I went directly to Anna’s website where it was selling new for $50 less than used GB.

I have also received a couple of garments that were either too damaged or stunk of BO and were unwearable. The quality control for non-bloggers doesn’t seem to exist. For me on the east coast it takes a full week to receive a new garment after I notify of return. Finally, if you’re tall and don’t like to wear dresses/skirts that fall to far above the knee, and/or work in a conservative office, there aren’t tons of closeting options.

All that being said, I will likely continue with GB another month or two because I don’t like wearing suits in the summer, and that is mostly what I own for work.

They will price match if it’s on the clothing manufacturer’s website! I mean, you’re still not getting a new item, but you already have it at home, and don’t have to pay shipping.

If you find a piece selling online for a lower price, email GB customer service. They do what they can to match–or top–the vendor price.

Finally someone agrees with me!! I’ve been a subscriber since November and also have a love/hate relationship. I love the concept, but the non-bloggers seem to experience issues. It also takes at least a week sometimes to get new items, bloggers get them in days. Plus we’re paying for the service, a lot, and it seems every blogger out there gets it free plus stuff that hasn’t even become available yet to normal folks. I returned some items and they were still in my “at home” section 2 months later. I had to email them for them to take them out of it. I also agree the price to keep the clothes is insane for used clothes. I’ve bought two pieces that I got brand new. A big pet peeve is I closeted things back in November and never got to try them before they “retired” them. Plus now they seem to be getting rid of SWAK, ASOS which are ones I love. I keep contemplating canceling but love the idea of the service. And realistically I’m a short, apple shape, most things I get are not fitting me right. Usually too long or too small. I’ve only kept a handful of things longer than a week.

I ended up buying that Jete even though the buy price was crazy for a freaking GB house brand! I loved it too much to let it go. I find I have that problem a lot, though 🙂 I bet that ruched Triste looked fab on you!! 🙂

LOL, seriously, wasn’t that the most comfy dress ever? I loved it! If that one would have looked cuter on me I totally would have bought it. I didn’t know JETE is their house brand!

Jete, Isabel and Alice, Flutter, Flor, Postcards, Triste, Spruce and Sage (I’m probably forgetting at least one other) – those are all GB house brands 🙂
