Comic Block Subscription Box Review + Coupon - June 2015 - tee

Batman Vs. Superman T-Shirt - Value $10

This is a ShirtPunch T-Shirt (seems like all Nerd Block Blocks are exclusively using ShirtPunch now) depicting the epic battle of Batman vs. Superman! Getting excited for the new movie yet? I am - especially if it has close ties the The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. The graphic is big on this shirt - I'm definitely a fan of this one.

Superhero Pen - Value $1

Looks like there were three possibilities of what you could have received - Avengers, Captain America, or Superman. Nothing too special here, but I will use it.

Comic Block Subscription Box Review + Coupon - June 2015 - 3

OK - on to what we all came here for - the comics! I read all three, and loved discovering some new titles! It should be noted that all three titles were bagged and boarded.

21st Century Tank Girl #1 - Value $10

According to what this is selling for on the internet, the $10 value might even be a bit low. This is a Comic Block exclusive variant cover as well, which may raise the value. It should be noted, and I'm surprised that it's not on the card, that this is a mature comic book to say the least! Lots of swearing and nudity - be warned. Overall, it's a cool comic, it has 4-5 different mini-stories, all with their own art style and writing style, so I loved that. I wasn't hooked after this one, so I probably won't continue following the run.

Ghostbusters: Get Real #1 - Value $4

I absolutely loved this title. I watched A LOT of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon when I was little, and they are brought back in the "Get Real" run! This, again, is a Comic Block exclusive variant cover. I highly recommend this to any Ghostbusters fan, it looks to be the start of an awesome run. I will absolutely be following this run!

Groot #1 - Value $4

I had just read this one as well, since we received it in the latest Power Up Box. The difference here is that you're getting an exclusive variant cover, as opposed to the normal cover from Power Up Box. I'm on the fence about continuing this run, it's fun and has a more playful art style. I may give it a couple more issues to see where it goes.

Verdict: I really enjoy this subscription so far. In the past couple of years, I've been looking for more and more ways to get into new titles, so this is up my alley. Whether or not the value of items will be worth it to you will largely depend on you liking the shirt and bonus item - it's certainly more for curation and discovery, which is more valuable to me.

What did you think of this month's Comic Block?

Have you not seen Tank Girl?? It came out in 1995, starring Lori Petty, Malcolm McDowell, Ice-T and Naomi Watts. I haven’t read any of the comics, but the movie was great.

I did. A long time ago when it first came out, but I had never read any of the comics until now.

Ah, I interpreted your comment about the maturity of the comic to mean you hadn’t even heard of it- possibly skewed by conversations with a coworker where I learned she pretty much lives in a cave since she had no clue about even breaking bad.

The best way I found to expand my comic title horizons was reading review sites. I was particularly fond of IGN’s comic section, although I don’t know if it’s still as handy as it used to be. Once I’d developed a reputation at my local comic shop, they would start making recommendations. Before long, my comic dabbling turned into a crazy long pull list. 🙂

Every time I try to get back into comics I’m almost overwhelmed by the different storylines. I love marvel, but there are so many timelines, it is tough to figure out where the best place is to start.

I know, right? That’s why they came out with their Ultimate line way back when. A decade ago? I’ve been out of the loop for a few years; I think they dumped that line. Personally, I just picked a title I wanted to read (when Joss Whedon wrote Astonishing X-Men.) Before too long, Marvel had one of their Big Events that included the book I was reading, which of course sucked me into a few more titles. And thus the ball was rolling.
So just pick a title. OR you could go with one of the many non-Big Two books. If you’re into superheroes, I would heartily recommend “Invincible” by Robert Kirkman. It’s put out by Image. It. Is. Awesome. BUT you absolutely MUST start at the beginning.
I could yammer about this for forever (I think I already did!), although I’m not as in the loop as I was several years ago.

This was my first Comic Block (I also subscribe to ComicBoxer) so I’m all about the comics! Getting three exclusive variant covers (of books I didn’t get from my local comic shop) along with the T-shirt made this an awesome box! I also received the Superman 4-pack of pens (huge Superman fan here, how did Comic Block know? ;)) They’ve already teased one exclusive variant cover for July’s block, and the book was one that I was debating about getting anyway, so win-win!

ComicBoxer is different in that they curate between 5-7 comic books per box, no t-shirt or anything, but these guys know their stuff, as they include hard-to-find variants (last month’s box had a ‘Fight Club’ #1 variant already selling for over $15 on the ‘net), signed copies and exclusives. Pricing starts at $19.99 US/box plus shipping or less if you sign up for multiple months. So it depends on what you’d like out of a box. To me, both of these scratch that itch!

Thanks for the new sub box suggestion! I think i’ll start subbing to more comic boxes and try them out. Comic Bento is another on.

Bento is cool if you want to try new series, but not so much if you’re looking for typical Marvel/DC/Image comics. They tend to do a lot with Valiant Comics, and a lot of issues no one has ever heard of.

If you’re a casual fan of comics, I’d stick to Comic Block.

I’ve heard hit-and-miss with Comic Bento. I’ve so wanted to try them out, and the unboxing videos/blogs I’ve read have given me mixed feelings. I love the idea of shipping graphic novels only, as you tend to get more complete stories rather than the first-of-six-parts in Comic Block for instance. I may give them a shot one day…

But definitely give my friends at ComicBoxer.com a try! They’re the same folks who run Stadium Comics in Brampton, Ontario, and post weekly Unboxing videos on YouTube, so you’re definitely dealing with people who know what will appeal to all types!
