Birchbox Vs Ipsy – July 2015

Birchbox vs Ipsy

The Birchbox vs Ipsy post series compares my Birchbox and Ipsy subscription every month to give you a good idea what you can expect from the two most popular beauty subscription boxes. (And since both boxes are $10 a month, it seems fair to stack them up against each other).

FYI – I pay for both of these subscriptions, and as a regular customer I get one of many variations available each month. So while one month alone might not be enough info to make a decision, looking at the results over several months should give you a good picture of what to expect with each box.

Verdict: It's a draw for me this month - I prefer the brands in my July Birchbox, but Ipsy has the higher value and more full-size items. (If I had to pick a winner though I'd go with Ipsy since I'm a little obsessed with the Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Organic Lip Balm).

Peacey

Do we consider it equal that Birch has cute boxes to keep stuff in and Ipsy has cute bags that can go in your purse? Actual question! :o)

This month for me it’s a tie. I really liked my Birchbox (I got the stila lipstain in Venezia, Klorane dry shampoo, Sea salt+charcoal scrub, Rusk leave in styling cream, and a minii supergoop CC cream) and as for my Ipsy (I got the Be a Bombshell lip balm, 2 in 1 shadow liner, EVA NYC dry shampoo, Aurora nail polish, and purlisse brightening serum). They were both good, I’m really excited for next months bag/box!

Ipsy never sends me Too Faced or Tarte. So that’s annoying.

My BB came with a 3.3 fl oz Leave-in Conditioning Mist by Macadamia Professional, which I’m i love with. I was surprised to receive something of this size and quality.

However, Ipsy was the winner for me too. I got gel nail polish, sea salt spray infused with algae extract, cleansing gel, the bombshell balm and 2-in-1 eyeliner/shadow. Definitely one of the best bags I’ve received so far.

I am obsessed with the lip balm as well! I need to stock up on it!

Ipsy is the winner for me! I got both and Ipsy is WAY better. I have now cancelled BB.

Same for me too this month.
My Ipsy box was a MAJOR win this month with Tarte Bronzer (waterproof which is major in nyc during the summer), BellaPiere Lipstick, the Mongongo Vanilla Coconut Cream Lip Conditioner, Tini Beauty Blue Eyeliner (interesting product i’ve only tried once so far but got a ton of compliments) and Jor’el Parker Classico scent which I LOVED.

My birchbox did introduce me to the fabulous Stilla lipstick that i’m now obsessed with but the rest of the box was comparatively a bust. It did have an amika product but the spray is going to last me forever, then a Coola product and a Juice product (I don’t like either brand), and then a tini tiny exfoliant from dr. brandt. Just not nearly as high of a value.

I’m definitely changing from a 1 year sub on birchbox and i’m really going to have to consider canceling after that…it just isn’t worth it anymore

I’ve been really impressed lately with Ipsy’s full size items

Ipsy features too many Made-in-China products. To me, that’s a deal breaker.

It’s true of both of them. I wish everyone who got stuff made in China would e-mail them complaining, maybe they’d get a clue.

This was my first month getting each box and Birchbox won me over.

I liked the perfume, the Rusk styling cream, and the Coola setting spray. The Stila lipstick was a little too bold for me and I have yet to try the Dr. Jart beauty balm. But I like 3 out of 4 I have tried so far.

For Ipsy I liked the eye shadow, but have straight hair so the sea salt spray just left it feeling dry. I don’t like using those type of tweezers, and the lip stick was too orange/coral for me. I just dab a little bit of it over my lip balm. Haven’t used the cleanser yet. So I only really kind of liked 2 out of the 4 I have tried. But I do really like the make-up bag.

I have slightly wavy hair…I keep waiting to get salt spray! Most people are disappointed to get it, but I’d love to try it.

Not a great month for me for either box. Really wishing Birchbox would stop sending me hair products and brown-colored makeup. I get it – I have brown eyes, brown skin, and brown hair, so brown-colored cosmetics are a safe choice for me. But they’re also boring. And I already have plenty of them. I wish they’d mix it up some.

Re-doing your beauty quiz makes a big difference on what products you get from Birchbox. Definitely worth doing!

Ipsy won for me this month, too! I got and love the Jersey Shore lip balm, the Coolway beachy spray, and the rollerball perfume. I also got the Teez lipstick, which isn’t in a shade I would normally wear, but I like having something a little different. The only thing I didn’t like was the eyeshadow quad.

I liked the Stila liquid lipstick in my Birchbox, and also the Oribe texturizing spray I got. I also got a Dr. Brandt exfoliator that I’ll use, but Supergoop! sunscreen and some other body sunscreen that I won’t use.

Ipsy won for me this month! I received the same Birchbox as Liz and only use the Oribe spray.

Ipsy won for me this month, easily. Bellapierre lipstick, Jersey Shore lip balm and Tarte bronzer were all fantastic.

This month Birchbox wins for us.

My Birchbox included the Oribe shampoo, Supergoop serum & stila lipgloss like Liz, as well as dr. brandt exfoliant & a tinted body sunscreen. The box has a total value of $34 and we’ll use all the products. The stila was horrible on me, but it turns out that my 13yo can actually rock it.

The Ipsy had a value of $49, but it included a cheap eyeshadow quad made in China and an overpriced lipstick that doesn’t work for either my 13yo or me (the bag is for my daughter). The youngest will be able to use it, but it’s not like she needs any more pinkish lipsticks or lipglosses. She has tons from all the boxes that send them.

So at the end of the day, not counting the lipsticks, we got a $26 value from Birchbox and a $22 from Ipsy.

Although I like most of the Ipsy stuff I receive, I think that some of the “values” for items are way too inflated (not just Ipsy, a lot of the boxes do this). I received the Be a Bombshell lip balm and it is NOT worth the $14 they are charging on their website. Also, the box the lip balm was in says “Made in PRC” which is China.

I subscribed to Ipsy purely because I wanted the makeup bags LOL. I use them to organize EVERYTHING. The sample aren’t bad either. So it’s no contest for me!

I agree that the lip balm is absolutely fabulous. I didn’t get it in my bag this time [see my YouTube video to see what I got]. So I went on my Ipsy account and still found a 50% off coupon [Ipsy50] and bought three of them and Ipsy customers are getting free shipping right now too.

As for the boxes. I have been a long time subscriber of both boxes and I have been liking my Birchbox, but absolutely loving my Ipsy bag. For those who read this comment: if you review your Ipsy stuff on the site you get much better bags more targeted to the things you like. My daughter never reviewed the stuff in her bags and ended up quitting because she wasn’t getting stuff she loved.

I just quit Birchbox this morning [I get way too many subscriptions and some have to go]. I won’t be quitting Ipsy.

I got that lip balm in a past ipsy but never tried it. I’m gonna go dig it out!
