Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - july

Better Half Box is a new subscription box that delivers full sized lifestyle items centered around a theme every month. They offer both a mens' and womens' subscription. I can't find anything on their site about why it is named "Better Half Box," so I'm guessing it's a subscription you would gift to your spouse?

This review is of the mens' box. This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - info

This month's theme is WILD WEST! Fun! Better Half Box included this information sheet with all the items listed (without values).

Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - soap-cacti

"If You've Got the Coffee, I've Got the Grind" soap by Music City Suds - Value $6

Dusty Desert Cacti Micro-Terrarium - Value $3.48

My husband is a big fan of "fancy soaps," as he calls them, so this soap was a great inclusion. I actually was already familiar with Music City Suds from another subscription box, and I was happy to see them again!

This terrarium is tiny! It's about the size of an actual egg. It's a child's toy, but it's pretty cool for a toy. I hope it actually works. My husband thought it was cool, too. He wants to try it out with the kids.

Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - snack-bracelet

Janis & Melanie Jalpeno Cheese Straws - Value $3.30

Leather Bracelet - Value $4.39

My husband is not a fan of spicy foods, but I am! I was very shrewd and negotiated a trade with him (see my upcoming review of the womens' box). I didn't really know what jalapeno cheese straws were supposed to taste like, but they have the consistency of cookies with a spicy, mildly cheesy flavor.

Leather bracelets are always nice, and this one fits the theme very well. My husband is not really into it, but I might wear it myself.

Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - toothpick-holder

White Horse Cowboy Boot Toothpick Holder - Value $7.50

My husband and I agreed that this little toothpick holder is kind of hokey. Then he promptly rushed into the dining room and crammed all our toothpicks into it! This is cute and fits the theme very well.

Better Half Box for Men Subscription Review - July 2015 - dice

Route 66 Dangling Dice - Value $7.99

My husband is not the kind of guy who would have dice hanging from his rear-view mirror, but we have an inside joke about Route 66, so these are perfect. I think they will make him giggle a little every day. Plus they are just so wonderfully cheesy!

The Verdict: I'm not sure what to think about Better Half Box! On the one hand, the products were all fun and useful. I think we will actually use everything in the box! On the other hand, the value only adds up to about $32.50, so the value just isn't there for the cost. Everything was well-curated around the theme, but this is not the kind of subscription in which curation is of particularly high value itself. This is the kind of subscription in which a really great curator could deliver a value that far exceeds the cost of the box. I think we've all seen it done many times. This could be a very sweet gift box for your spouse or boyfriend, but I would like to see the value of the items add up to maybe $50 or more, with at least one really cool hero item. I don't mean to sound too harsh, because I do think it has potential.

What do you think of Better Half Box for Men?

If a leather bracelet costs $4.39, then it’s not leather! Other than the soap and cheese straws, everything seems to be from a dollar store or Ali Baba. It feels sort of cheap and tacky. If it were just ONE item that appeared to be from a gas station convenience store, then it would be cute because it might seem ironic, but when MOST of items are cheap plastic toys, then it’s not funny– especially if you’re making people pay $40 for it.

They sell those terrariums at our local Dollar Tree, so that is a generous estimate put up of the value…

It’s definitely kind of cheesy. I’ve read the reviews for the women’s box on another blog, and they seem to be a little less tacky. The website, though, makes it kind of difficult to figure out which box you’re signing up for — or maybe that’s just me.

Quirky. But, most definitely not worth the price. I wish there was a good straight forward beauty box for men. One that just contained men’s beauty products like moisturizers, shaving products, cologne samples etc. They all seem to have a theme and/or trinkets. But, I will say that GQ’s Gentlemen’s box is pretty good. It’s around $25 monthly and even comes with their mag. I’m already eyeing it for a Christmas gift.

I was curious to see what was in the men’s box– I have received the last 2 women’s boxes. I really liked the June Box, but it seems that a lot of the July Box stuff was from China. This sub could have a lot of potential — I’m sure that they are still feeling their way– but I agree that the value needs to be higher.

Cool idea and good curation. I like the uniqueness of the items. I wish the value were a little better.

Great potential. I even like the theme. But the curation seems random, so the execution here seems lacking. I can’t see anyone getting excited about anything except maybe the soap or maybe the dice. Not a winning box, IMO.

This is an interesting box. I think it’s very well curated, but I’m not sure I love everything. The dice are an odd addition. Overall, I think it’s a novel idea for a sub box and for a theme. I look forward to reading the women’s box review.
