GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Box

GlossyBox is a monthly beauty subscription box. They have the best packaging in the business, their products are usually deluxe-size or full size, and the value is usually really good too. The only issue with this box seems to be the late shipping – I would recommend just keeping that in mind and setting your expectations accordingly if you sign up for this box.

GlossyBox sent us this box early for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Glamglow

Clearista Retexturizing Gel – 15 ml Value $10

Here is the description of the Retexturizing Gel from Clearista:

Clearista Retexturizing Gel™ contains our safe proprietary ingredients plus mild, biodegradable abrasives that enhance the skin’s normal exfoliation processes. It not only helps reduce the appearance of rough and bumpy surface blemishes, but is also effective at reducing the appearance of age and sun-related folding and wrinkling of sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth.

This brand is new to me, and I'm excited to try it. I love that this product is free of synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, and parabens, plus I always am on the lookout for a new gentle exfoliator!

Glamglow Powermud - .5 oz Value $19

I love all of the Glamglow products I've tried, so this was the first item out of the box I used! It's paraben, phthalate, and sulfate free, and unlike other Glamglow muds, this one is "mud to oil" - it transitions to a cleansing oil when you wipe it off.

I put on a thin layer of the mask, and it took about 10 minutes for it to completely dry up. (I like masks that change in the process of wearing them - it makes me feel like they are working!) After washing it off, my skin felt incredibly clean. This is a product I will likely buy in full size - I just love how it makes my skin feel!

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Nail Polish

Sebastian StylBrid 9 - 1.5 oz Value $5

This hairspray is paraben and alcohol free, and it is designed to be a hybrid style product. You can use the spray on damp or dry hair to add volume, texture, hold, etc. I just sampled it on dry hair, and I like that it isn't sticky at all and didn't make my hair too stiff either.

teeez Head over Heels Nail Lacquer Base Coat FULL SIZE! - Value $14

For all nail polish I receive in subscription boxes, I don't think I ever get base coats, so this is a nice change! (And the packaging design is cute too).

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Lipstick

Doucce Mineral Matt Lipstick (Shade 907) - FULL SIZE! Value $20

I like the shade of this lipstick, but I do have a few issues with it. First, I like a moisturizing lipstick that easily glides on - this is the opposite of that. I'm guessing it has to be since it is a matte finish, but I'm not crazy about the formula. My other issue is that I can't find the ingredients for this lipstick anywhere online.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $68. I think the value is good, and I'm happy with the sizes of the beauty items included. I'm most excited about the Glamglow, Clearista, and Stylbrid products. What do you think of the May 2015 GlossyBox?

Again, love the packaging! And agree about the base coat – need one.
Now I want to try the Powermud…

The May box is my first box. I just got it today in MS. Actually I have 6 products in it which I didn’t expect (maybe a welcome offer lol). I love most of the products especially the lip balm by Teeez, the glamglow musk and the exfoliator are nice as well. The black eye shadow powder isn’t for me and the bottle was kinda broken (I consider this is the bonus so not much complain about it).

I just realized it’s literally the end of May and I never received my May GB! Anyone else on the West Coast still waiting on theirs??

Reply ButtonReply

m

ugh… this is so weird… no to mention frustrating… it’s June 15th and I still haven’t gotten my May GB. Is this normal?

Ericka

I would contact them? I received BOTH my May and June boxes this past Saturday (06/13).

I just got back from a long weekend and was so happy to see my GlossyBox waiting for me. I was actually really excited to receive a nail polish base coat, but instead received a Julep polish in Drew – Bombshell. I was slightly disappointed by this swap out, but this is my 1st Julep polish ever, so I’m happy to try it out. As far as the lipstick goes, I was happy with the color and scent of it. The Sebastian spray is great, always happy to have travel size hair products. Very excited to try the Clearista and super stoked to have a GlamGlow product to try!

I just received my box today, which felt odd because I didn’t get April’s box until after the first week of May. Anyway, I’m intrigued by most of the items but won’t use the lipstick. It just smells weird, like Cover Girl makeup weird.

I got my notice of shipment on the 23rd. I won’t receive my box until the end of the week so while they’ll probably get in under the wire for the month, only barely.I know Liz gave us the heads up about the late shipping but I find myself irritated every month. Maybe that’s unreasonable but it’s anyone else a little tired of this?

Buyer Beware – they charged me twice in one month, the 2nd time after I cancelled. Why are they sending me 2 boxes in less than 30 days?!?! I only wanted one discounted by Rue La La, because it’s not worth $21. They shipped it out 11 days after they charged my credit card! It is my understanding that the law states they can not charge your credit card prior to shipping. They said they shipped today, so does that mean I’m getting the box in the description above or the crappy box of leftovers? They also deleted my complaint on FB mins after I posted it. I’m so angry, so I’m letting my credit card company & BBB deal with it.

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

They can charge you before shipping. Very few businesses that sell products don’t charge you at point of sale.

Alicia

I cancelled my subscription back in April so I wouldn’t get this months. Today I just got my shipping confirmation. Oh well it doesn’t look that bad. I just went ahead and resubscribed too.

Reply ButtonReply

Ragan

You have to cancel before April 15 to avoid getting May’s box. If you just resubscribed, you will probably get a second May box. Only it will be a “classic” box full of old stuff because May is supposedly sold out.

Jennifer

Just got my box today. It’s identical to Liz’s. I like the variety, but my only complaint is that most of the samples seem small. I signed on for Glossybox because I was told by someone who gets both glossy and birch that the samples were considerably bigger. Happy to try all the items though.

Wish the lipstick wasn’t so dry. I would never buy it as is.

Reply ButtonReply

Natalie

The last few months (I felt) that the samples were of a pretty decent size. This month, it’s true, they’re not as large. Some of the products are more costly, though, so there is that. There are two full-size items this month to be fair, they just aren’t physically big ones.

LIz (or someone knowledgeable) could you give me some advice about re-subbing/timing please? I stopped my sub after February and got lured in by the RueLaLa certificate. I will be re-joining in either June or July (depending on what the June box spoilers indicate). I know that I should re-sub on the 1st so that I get the ‘real box’ vs. the ‘leftovers box’. My question is regarding glossy points. I will have 1,000 points after reviewing my next box. How do I go about redeeming these for a free box but avoiding a duplicate box? In other words, I would just like it to extend my subscription for a month at the end of my RueLaLa paid subscription term. I have never been one to sub/unsub boxes (this one or any others) monthly so not sure how to make this happen. Thanks!

Hi Doucce, I’ve heard a lot of comments about your lipstick and the big complaint is the formula; it is dry and takes several firm passes of the tube along the lips to get the color to show up. However, the packaging is sleek and eye-catching and the color (Cherry Blossom) is truly gorgeous and flattering for all skin tones. So, you have a product that, with some tweaking, could be really great. Good luck! 🙂

Debbie

I really liked this box! I did get almost the same as Liz but my polish is in coral which is beautiful and one of my favorites. I am trying to give the lipstick the benefit of trying it a couple of times. The first application was not smooth and the color was blah, but after the second application it got a bit smoother. Not my favorite formula but I will use it. Would rate it as just ok. I can’t wait to try the glam glow!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

I got the same box besides the nail polish is a gold glitter which I won’t use. I just got the mystery box from julep so I was really hoping for the base coat since I currently don’t have one and I want to start getting back into my nail routine !

Reply ButtonReply

Faye

I got the same box as shown here, except my nail polish is a gold glitter polish. I would like it if I didn’t have 2 others from Julep already.

Reply ButtonReply

Ragan

With my luck, the polish will be a duplicate of something I already have from Julep.

Tara

i just got mine yesterday (may 13) and i think its just ok. i got the same as Liz other than cotton candy nail polish which i think i like though its a bit orangy for me (to me cotton candy is baby pink). we shall see how long it lasts ! I tweeted the company to see if the lipstick is GF and they said “its technically GF however it may have had contact with gluten because the factory isnt GF” seems odd to me. i tweeted back asking them if what they mean is the raw ingredients are GF but the equipment is shared. i don’t know much about the actual manufacturing of lipstick but i suppose the production lines could have other items on them that contain gluten like lotions or something. who knows. I wont chance it especially if the formula is bad. very disappointing for any sub box to contain an item with no ingredients listed.

Man I’m glad I’m no the only one who feels that way about the lipstick. Tried it on, and I felt like I was using an old-lipstick. It is like rubbing a crayon on your lips, it’s that hard to get on. The color is nice, but I shouldn’t have to fight a lipstick to get it on my lips.

Reply ButtonReply

Mary

I got mine today and liked it for the most part. I wish I’d gotten a base coat (or top coat) for the polish; I got pink (I always get pink or coral — my least favorite nail colors) but the bottle is so darned pretty and the box it came in as well that I’ll probably keep it on my vanity as decor. 🙂 Excited to try the Glam Glow mask; I like the other GG product I tried.

Reply ButtonReply

Danielle

I just got mine. I like it, but there are at least two items I’ll probably be putting up for swap.

I really like the lipstick shade (I got the same one as Liz), but haven’t tried it on yet. I hope I like the formula, but I’m worried I won’t.

I didn’t get a base coat nail polish, but instead got a pretty coral color. I like it, but I received one just like it in my March Boxycharm, so I might put it up for trade.

The Sebastian product looks interesting, and it’s something I’ll probably use.

I actually probably won’t use the Glamglow or the Clearista. I’ll most likely swap them.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

I just got my Glossybox and Boxycharm today it looks like May is going to be a disappointing month for me besides my Birchbox. I got a mauve/purple-ish lipstick, cotton candy nail polish, it’s a pastel pink color. I’ll only use the Glamglow and Clearista which I’m interested in trying. I’m very glad Glossybox appears to have gone back to the same box for everyone though.

Kim

I know this sounds crazy but I don’t really care when the box shows up….as long as I get my one per month 🙂 Just got my tracking so it is one its way. LOL (with all my boxes) I like the element of surprise in no knowing what is going to show up on any given day

Reply ButtonReply

Trish

Instead of the regular April box, I received the Mother’s Day box. I guess that makes up for it being really late.

Did anyone else get the Mother’s Day box instead of the regular one?

Reply ButtonReply

Laura

I still haven’t received my April box. They asked if I wanted a refund, and I decided to hold out for a few more days because I really wanted the Estee’ Lauder sample. I did receive some glossydots as an apology, which was nice. I do think I’ll email them tomorrow though to ask for a refund. This is the only time I’ve really had an issue with their shipping (besides the October and February boxes coming after I could make use of the holiday items), but this is a bit ridiculous. Glossybox was one of my favorite boxes too – they always seem to hit the mark with me and what I need in my arsenal. I’m trying not to hold a grudge.

Reply ButtonReply

Trish

Has your May box shipped yet? I should be getting my May one in a few days. Glossybox used to be one of my favorites too but I may cancel it now. I’m not happy with Boxycharm this month either. I’m always reluctant to cancel for fear that the next month will have something awesome in it.

JR

I haven’t received anything. So discouraged as I am new to this whole process. Subbed around early April. Is this normal service for them?

Reply ButtonReply

Trish

I subbed in early February and got a box mid month. I got my March box later in the month and my April box today. I don’t know what is going on with them. The Mother’s Day box is nice though.

JR

Will everyone receive glamglow and clearista products??

Reply ButtonReply

Kat

I actually dread getting lip color products from them. Don’t get me wrong, lots of women look forward to receiving it, but with my skin color, darker lip sticks, glosses, stains look better on me if they are a darker color and preferably red, which I never get in my box. Even when I filled out the preferences, I still get “pink” which looks unflattering on me.

Reply ButtonReply

Claudia

Don’t be too concerned about the color of this lipstick. As Liz (I think it was Liz who reviewed) mentioned, this formula is so dry it’s sort if like drawing a stuck if chalk across ones mouth. Wouldn’t you know, I finally received a color that works for me! It’s super dry and wears right off.

Reply ButtonReply

Natalie

I have the same problem with them! I’m hoping I don’t have another OCC letdown – I got orange, and then the alternative would have been too pink anyway.

Reply ButtonReply

Eliza

I feel your pain. I get these deep dark pinks from them and they are just all wrong for me. I’m sad when I have to give them away or toss them, they are usually really great formulas just a color issue. I think GlossyBox should give us at least 3 color choices for our boxes. I also think it would make their customers much happier.

Cindy

I think I’m skipping this month. Hopefully next month will be better and I will use my Rue LaLa certificate. Looking forward to seeing what everyoe receives this month, though. Last month definitely seemed better than the March debacle with the huge variations in value.
